fenbs vs Jira: for the team that does not need Jira

Jira runs software organisations. fenbs runs one board. If you have ever opened Jira to file one bug and closed it without filing it, this page is for you.

The short answer

Jira is the right tool for a software organisation with several teams, formal releases, and someone whose job includes administering Jira. fenbs is the right tool for a team of one to twenty that wants to write down features, enhancements and bugs, move them across four lanes, and let people and AI assistants work the same board without anyone reading a manual.

Where Jira is better

  • Scale. Many projects, many boards, cross-project reports, permission schemes for hundreds of people.
  • Process. Sprints, story points, custom workflows with states and transitions, custom fields, issue types and sub-tasks. If your process needs modelling, Jira models it.
  • Compliance. Audit logs, SSO, data residency and the rest of what a procurement team asks for.
  • Integrations. Everything in software development connects to Jira.

Where fenbs is better

  • Nothing to administer. There are no schemes, workflows or issue types to configure. The board is there when you open it.
  • Three kinds and four lanes are the whole vocabulary. Feature, Enhancement, Bug; To Do, Next Up, In Progress, Completed. A site foreman and a senior engineer read the same board the same way.
  • AI assistants are members, not integrations. Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or Claude Code connects over MCP, works under your role, and every change is signed with its name in the history. See how it connects.
  • Refusals in plain words. When someone cannot do something, fenbs says “You are a Viewer on Kitchen Refit, which cannot move tasks between lanes.” Jira says the button is missing.
  • Stable refs. FE-014 means the same task forever, like a Jira key, without a project to create first.

What fenbs deliberately does not have

Epics, sprints, story points, custom fields, custom workflows, sub-tasks, time tracking, dependencies and automations. Not yet, not on the roadmap. Every one of those is a request to become a worse Jira, and Jira already exists. If you need them, use Jira and do not apologise for it.

How to decide in ten minutes

Paste this week's real list into a fenbs board with Add many, connect the AI assistant you already use over MCP, and work from it for a few days. If the board is still true at the end of the week, it is doing the job. If you kept reaching for a field Jira has and fenbs does not, that is your answer too, and it is a good one.

Questions people ask.

Can fenbs replace Jira for a software team?

For a small team that uses Jira as a to-do list with extra steps, yes: paste the backlog in and work from the board. For a team that relies on sprints, story points, custom workflows or cross-project reporting, no — fenbs does not have those and does not plan to.

Does fenbs have issue keys like FEN-123?

Yes. Every task has a reference such as FE-014, BU-015 or EN-016: the letters say the kind, the number is unique on the board and is never reused, even after a delete. You can also record your own reference on a task, for example a Jira key you are migrating from.

Can I move my tasks into fenbs?

Yes. Paste a list — one task per line — into Add many and fenbs makes the tasks, with a kind and a lane each. There is no importer for other tools’ export files yet; a pasted list covers what most small boards need.

Does fenbs cost anything to try?

No. Your own board is free with up to 50 open tasks at a time, with no card and no trial clock. Personal is $4.99 a month with no limit; a team workspace is $99.50 a month however many people join. AI assistants are free on every plan.

Start with one thing.

Your own board is free. AI assistants cost nothing extra on any plan.
