NotebookLM Not Playing Audio? Checks to Get Listening

Separate silent playback from unfinished generation or a missing Audio Overview. Check the player, device, account, and service without losing your research.

Updated 5 min read

If NotebookLM is not playing audio, first determine whether the overview exists and its playback timer moves. Silence with a moving timer calls for sound-output checks; a missing or unfinished overview calls for generation and access checks. Google’s current documentation calls the product Gemini Notebook.

Keep your original sources and any checked notes available while you investigate. fenbs can retain their links and your next study question, so a listening problem does not also become a lost research session.

What should you try before generating another overview?

  1. Open the correct notebook and find the Audio Overview in Studio. Confirm that you are selecting the intended recording rather than starting a new generation.
  2. Press Play and watch the timer. Record whether it advances, stays still, or shows an error.
  3. Check device volume, the selected speaker or headphones, and any muted browser tab. Play a familiar audio file to compare the same output.
  4. Pause and resume once. If the page seems stuck, save any drafted questions before refreshing it.
  5. Compare playback in another browser or the official mobile app, using the same account and notebook. Keep the original overview while you test.

A second test is most helpful when it changes one variable. If headphones play other audio but the overview fails in every browser, the headphones are a weaker explanation. If the same recording works on your phone, focus next on the original browser or device rather than replacing the research sources.

Is the recording ready, or is it still being created?

Google’s Audio Overview guidance (opens in a new tab) separates generation from loading previous audio. An overview can take time to generate. For an existing recording, open it from Studio and use Load when offered. A generation indicator is not yet a playable recording.

If you see an error, copy its wording before retrying. Also check the Google Workspace Status Dashboard (opens in a new tab) for a relevant disruption. A service problem may affect an individual feature, so working text chat does not settle whether audio generation is healthy.

Avoid making several replacement recordings just to see whether something changes. First compare an existing overview, note which step fails, and read any usage message. If you eventually regenerate, keep a note of the selected source versions and the intended listening question so you can evaluate the replacement.

Why is the timer moving but nothing audible?

Follow the sound path from the player to your ears. Check the app or tab, the operating system volume, and the output device. Disconnect unused Bluetooth headphones if the sound might be routed there. This is a diagnostic comparison, not proof of a particular NotebookLM defect.

Test a different point in the recording. If every other recording plays and only one segment is silent, note its approximate position. If all sound from that browser is absent, compare another browser before changing account settings or source content.

For a managed work device, ask your support team about the failed comparison rather than disabling organizational protection. Tell them whether audio works elsewhere and whether the player advances. That gives them a concrete starting point without requiring you to guess which network or browser policy applies.

Can you recover playback on your phone or offline?

The official mobile app guide (opens in a new tab) documents playback from Studio and downloads for listening offline inside the app. Confirm that a download finishes, then find it in the app’s Downloaded area. An in-app offline copy is different from exporting a standalone audio file.

If your notebook appears out of date on the phone, compare the account first, then close and reopen the app. Do not delete the notebook or clear app storage as an early troubleshooting step: first make sure the original sources and useful notes are available elsewhere.

For browser downloads, use the overview’s supported download control when available. Publisher restrictions can affect downloads from notebooks containing eligible book sources. Treat a missing download option as a separate question from whether the online recording itself will play.

Keep the original document links in fenbs so a temporary device or download problem does not leave your study plan dependent on one audio copy.

What if a shared recording will not open?

Ask the sender to check the original notebook and your access rather than immediately requesting a new public link. Google’s audio sharing instructions require the relevant notebook access, and a deleted overview no longer works through its old sharing link. Confirm the signed-in account matches the intended recipient.

If it opens for the owner but fails for you, report that comparison. Do not assume the fix is to make a private research notebook public. The owner can inspect the intended sharing arrangement while you continue reading permitted source material.

How fenbs helps

Keep studying when the player stops

Save the source index, the listening question, and your checked findings in a fenbs project. Add a task for the failed recording with the tests already attempted. The next connected assistant can read the research context without relying on the unavailable audio.

How to do this with fenbs

  1. Create a free account, then add a project for the course or research topic.
  2. Add the notebook and original document URLs to Links and listings. Include enough description to recognize the correct source version.
  3. Save verified study notes as AI context notes and create tasks for unanswered questions. Record the playback checks separately from the research conclusions.
  4. Connect a supported assistant using Integrations. Ask it to read the context, use authorized source material, and save Where we left off before stopping.

fenbs does not play or repair Audio Overviews and does not import NotebookLM chats. If you simply need to listen to one recording, the official player or app is the better fit. Use fenbs when the references and next steps need to survive across tools.

How can you continue the underlying research?

Return to the source and write the question the recording was meant to help answer. Check the relevant passage directly, then save a short finding with its location. Audio is one study format; a source-backed conclusion should remain usable even when playback is unavailable.

For broader failures, use NotebookLM not working; importing spoken material belongs in the audio transcription guide. If you need another workspace, review NotebookLM alternatives. Find related study workflows in AI at work.

Questions people ask.

Should I delete an overview that will not play?

Keep it while you compare devices, sound outputs, and another recording. Deletion can remove a useful comparison and break an existing share link.

Why does audio work on my phone but fail on my laptop?

That comparison points toward the original device, browser, or connection, but does not identify the exact cause. Test sound output and another browser before changing your notebook.

Is an offline app download a separate audio file?

The mobile app provides offline listening inside the app. Do not assume that an in-app download gives you a standalone file for another player.

Does a playable overview guarantee its information is right?

No. Check important claims against the original sources. AI-generated audio can contain mistakes even when playback works normally.
