NotebookLM Alternatives (Now Gemini Notebook)

The closest NotebookLM alternative is Microsoft Copilot Notebooks, if your files live in Microsoft 365: like NotebookLM, it answers only from the references you add and can make an audio overview of them. Claude Projects is the better pick for ongoing work built on a set of documents, where you want Claude’s general knowledge as well as your files. ChatGPT Projects suits a small group that wants to share the conversations themselves, with Google Drive and Slack as sources. None of the three matches NotebookLM’s range of study outputs. And note the name: NotebookLM is now Gemini Notebook, the same product with a new name, so if the rename is what sent you looking, nothing about how it works has gone away. This comparison reflects each vendor’s help pages as of September 30, 2026.

First: NotebookLM is now Gemini Notebook

Google’s announcement, NotebookLM is now Gemini Notebook↗ (opens in a new tab), dated July 16, 2026, says it remains a standalone research product, with notebooks now also available inside the Gemini app. Existing notebooks and shared links carried over. What changed, including compute-based usage limits since September 2, 2026, is in NotebookLM is now Gemini Notebook. This post uses both names, since most people still search for the old one.

What to compare

NotebookLM’s strength is narrow and specific. Google’s page on chat in Gemini Notebook↗ (opens in a new tab) says responses use only data from your sources, may decline when a question falls outside them, and cite direct quotes you can click to check. So judge an alternative on five things:

• Grounding: does it answer only from your files, or mix in general knowledge and the web?
• Sources: what you can add, how many, and whether they stay in sync with the original.
• Outputs: chat only, or audio overviews, reports and study material too.
• Sharing: who can join, with what rights, and whether they see your chats.
• Home: which account and suite it belongs to, since that decides what your files can reach.

Microsoft Copilot Notebooks: the closest match

Microsoft’s page on how Copilot Notebooks works↗ (opens in a new tab) is the nearest thing to NotebookLM’s promise: Copilot uses only the references you add to the notebook, and does not reach into your whole OneDrive, email, Teams chats or the web. References include Word, PowerPoint and Excel files, Copilot pages, meeting notes, chats and links, and Microsoft says they update as the project changes. When you add a SharePoint folder or site, Copilot picks up to 300 of the most relevant files you can access to ground an answer.

• Outputs: chat, custom instructions and an audio overview of the notebook. Notebooks also open in OneNote.
• Access: a Microsoft Copilot or Copilot Chat license, plus a SharePoint or OneDrive service plan to create notebooks. Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, Premium and Pro subscribers get it too, without some features such as Capture and mind maps on Personal, Family and Premium.
• Name: Microsoft’s help pages now say Microsoft Copilot Notebooks, while older pages and addresses still say Microsoft 365 Copilot Notebooks. Same product.

Sharing is the catch. Microsoft’s Copilot Notebooks FAQ↗ (opens in a new tab) says anyone you invite gets editing access, view-only access is not supported yet, you add individuals rather than groups, and sharing a notebook may give access to the files in it. Notebooks are stored in a personal SharePoint Embedded container belonging to the creator. If you need readers who cannot change anything, that rules it out for now.

Claude Projects: for ongoing work

Anthropic’s page What are projects?↗ (opens in a new tab) describes a project as a self-contained workspace with its own chats, knowledge base and instructions. You upload documents, text or code, and Claude uses them in every chat in the project. Free accounts can create up to five projects. On Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans, when knowledge approaches the context limit Claude switches to retrieval, which Anthropic says expands capacity by up to ten times. Team and Enterprise can share a project inside the organization with Can view or Can edit.

The difference from NotebookLM is intent. Project knowledge is context for Claude, not a fence around its answers, so Claude brings its own knowledge and reasoning to your files. That is better for drafting, analysis and code, and worse when every sentence must trace back to a document. ChatGPT Projects: for shared conversations

OpenAI’s guide to projects↗ (opens in a new tab) describes them as a way to keep related chats, files, instructions and sources together for work that continues over time or depends on the same files. Sources can be uploaded files or connected sources; a private project can also take a link to a Google Drive file or folder or a Slack channel. Each project can use project-only memory, so its chats reference only each other.

Sharing is where it differs most from both NotebookLM and Claude: members of a shared ChatGPT project see and continue each other’s chats, and OpenAI offers project sharing on individual plans as well as business ones. Like Claude, ChatGPT answers from your sources and its own knowledge, and it can use web search in a project. Or stay with Google, in the Gemini app

If what you want is NotebookLM with outside knowledge added, you may not need to leave. Notebooks now appear in the Gemini app too, synced both ways, and there answers are grounded in your sources but may also use web search and other tools. Which NotebookLM alternative to pick

• Answers only from your own files, inside Microsoft 365: Microsoft Copilot Notebooks.
• Answers only from your files, with audio and video overviews, flashcards and quizzes: stay with Gemini Notebook; nothing here matches its Studio.
• A body of work you return to for weeks, where you want Claude to draft and reason, not just cite: Claude Projects.
• A small group, not necessarily on a business plan, working in the same conversations with Drive or Slack as sources: ChatGPT Projects.
• Your sources plus the web, still in Google: notebooks in the Gemini app.

What none of them tracks

All four hold sources and answer questions about them. None records the work the research produces: which follow-ups are open, who picked one up and whether it is done. Ask for that list in a form you can paste:

One per line, starting with a verb, under 12 words.
Start each line with feature, enhancement or bug.
After each line, name the source in parentheses.
Leave out anything the sources do not support.
