NotebookLM Not Working? Check Access, Sources, and Limits

If Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) is not loading, refusing sources or giving poor answers, work through this ordered troubleshooting process before giving up on the session.

Updated 5 min read

Gemini Notebook, the current name for NotebookLM since July 2026, can fail in several distinct ways: it may not load at all, refuse to add a source, stop responding mid-session, or produce answers that do not match the sources. Each failure has a different cause and a different fix. Tools like fenbs can keep your source links and research next steps safe so you can resume the session in another tool if the problem does not clear up quickly.

The same troubleshooting discipline applies to other AI tools; for comparison, see /blog/claude-md-not-working, /blog/claude-code-not-working, /blog/chatgpt-connectors-not-working and /blog/cursor-agent-not-working.

Start with the most common cause

Most Gemini Notebook failures are one of three things: a sign-in or account problem, a source format or size issue, or a temporary outage. Check the simplest explanation first. Open the Google Workspace Status Dashboard to see if there is a known outage. If the status is green and the problem persists, move to the more specific checks below.

If the notebook was working recently and has stopped without a clear cause, try a hard browser refresh (Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows, Cmd+Shift+R on Mac). A cached version of the page sometimes conflicts with a session update. If that does not help, sign out of your Google account and sign back in.

Sign-in and access problems

Gemini Notebook requires a Google account. If you are signed in with a Google Workspace account managed by an employer or institution, the administrator may have restricted access to Gemini apps. You will see an access-denied message rather than the notebook interface. Contact your IT administrator or try a personal Google account to confirm this is the cause.

If you can see the interface but cannot access a specific notebook someone shared with you, check that the owner has granted your account access. Notebooks can be shared with specific accounts, with a domain, or made available to anyone with the link; a mismatch between the share setting and your account type blocks access.

Source upload and processing failures

Gemini Notebook accepts PDFs, text files, Google Docs, Google Slides, web URLs, YouTube links and audio files, but each type has its own limits. A source that appears to upload but shows no content or an error has usually hit a file size limit, a format problem, or a content restriction. Check the source after adding it: if the text preview is empty or truncated, the source did not load usefully.

  • PDF files: scanned PDFs without embedded text will not load as readable sources; use a PDF with selectable text or run OCR on the scan first.
  • Web URLs: some pages block external fetchers; if the source loads empty, try copying the page text and adding it as a plain text source instead.
  • YouTube links: videos without captions or with captions disabled may fail to load useful content.
  • Google Docs: make sure you are signed in with the account that has access to the document.
  • File size: check the current per-source and per-notebook limits on the Gemini Notebook help pages, as Google updates them periodically.
How fenbs helps

Keep source links safe when the session breaks

Save the URLs and files you verified before a session breaks in your project's Links and listings in fenbs. When you resume in the same tool or a different one, you know exactly which sources to re-add and which were confirmed to work.

Response quality and citation problems

If Gemini Notebook gives answers that do not match your sources, the most likely causes are a low-quality source load, a question that is too broad, or a genuine model error. Ask it to cite the specific passage that supports the answer. If it cannot produce a clear citation, the answer is not grounded in the sources you added—it may be using general model knowledge instead.

A notebook with many loosely related sources can produce confused or blended answers. Remove sources that are not directly relevant to the question at hand and re-ask. A focused notebook with a few high-quality sources usually outperforms a large notebook with many loosely related documents.

Browser and quota limits

Gemini Notebook is a web app and is affected by browser state. Browser extensions that block scripts, modify cookies or inject content can interfere with the app. If the problem appeared after a browser update or extension install, try the notebook in a private browsing window without extensions enabled. If it works there, the issue is with a specific extension or browser setting.

Gemini Notebook also has per-notebook source limits and daily usage quotas. If you have reached a limit, you will see a message explaining what was blocked. Check Google's current limits on the Gemini Notebook help page rather than relying on numbers from third-party articles, as the limits change.

How to do this with fenbs

fenbs does not fix Gemini Notebook problems, but it keeps your research progress available if the session is interrupted and you need to resume in a different tool or the next day.

  1. Create a free account and add the research project before starting a long Gemini Notebook session.
  2. As you verify sources, add each working URL or file reference to the project's Links and listings.
  3. When a session is interrupted, note in the project's Where we left off what was confirmed, what failed and what is still to be checked.
  4. Connect a backup AI tool from Integrations so that if Gemini Notebook is unavailable, another assistant can read the project context and continue the research.
  5. When Gemini Notebook is back, resume from the task list rather than starting over.

Questions people ask.

Why is NotebookLM not loading today?

Check the Google Workspace Status Dashboard for a known outage. If the status is green, try a hard browser refresh and signing out and back in. The problem is often a cached session conflict rather than a persistent issue.

Why will NotebookLM not accept my PDF?

Scanned PDFs without embedded text will not load as useful sources. Make sure your PDF contains selectable text, not just images of pages. Also check that the file does not exceed the current per-source size limit shown in Gemini Notebook's help documentation.

Why does NotebookLM give answers that do not match my sources?

Ask it to cite the source passage that supports the answer. If it cannot, the answer may be drawing on general model knowledge rather than your sources. Check that the source loaded fully—an empty or truncated source will not ground answers reliably.

Can NotebookLM be blocked by a work or school account?

Yes. Google Workspace administrators can restrict access to Gemini apps. If you see an access-denied message with a Workspace account, contact your IT administrator. A personal Google account will confirm whether the restriction is account-specific.

What should I do if NotebookLM keeps timing out?

Try the notebook in a private browsing window without extensions. If it works there, a browser extension is likely interfering. Also check your internet connection and whether you have reached a daily usage quota, which Gemini Notebook will indicate with a message.
