How to Switch ChatGPT Accounts Without Mixing Up Work
Switching ChatGPT accounts is straightforward, but mixing up which account and workspace are active can send project context to the wrong place. Here is how to switch cleanly, how to run two accounts in parallel, and how to keep project context available across accounts.

Switching ChatGPT accounts requires signing out of the current account and signing in with another. Each account has its own conversation history, memory and custom instructions. There is no shared data between accounts, and no automatic way to transfer project history from one to another.
The main risk is not the switch itself but losing track of which account is active. Project context — decisions, tasks and current state — that lives only in one account's conversations is inaccessible from the other. Tools like fenbs keep project context outside any one account, so any connected assistant can read it regardless of which account is signed in.
How to sign out and switch accounts on the web
In the ChatGPT web app, click your profile picture or initials in the bottom-left corner of the sidebar. A menu appears with account options. Select "Log out." ChatGPT signs you out and returns you to the sign-in page.
On the sign-in page, enter the email and password for the other account, or use a social login (Google, Microsoft) if that account is set up that way. Once signed in, you are in the other account with its own conversation history and settings.
To confirm which account you are in, check the profile picture or name in the bottom-left corner. The conversation list will reflect that account's history.
Switching accounts on mobile
In the ChatGPT iOS or Android app, tap the profile icon or the sidebar menu. Look for the account name or settings option. Select "Log out" and confirm. Sign in with the other account's credentials on the login screen.
The mobile app does not store multiple accounts simultaneously in the same way some other apps do. Each sign-out and sign-in fully replaces the active session.
Running two accounts at the same time using browser profiles
If you need access to two ChatGPT accounts at the same time, browser profiles let you maintain separate signed-in sessions in different windows. Chrome, Edge and Firefox all support creating multiple profiles, each with its own cookies and session data.
Create a second browser profile in your browser settings and sign in to ChatGPT with the second account there. You can then switch between the two windows without signing out. Each profile is completely separate — conversations, memory and settings do not mix.
Keep the two profiles visually distinct — most browsers let you choose a color or icon for each — so it is easy to see which account is active in which window.
Workspaces within one account
If you are using ChatGPT through an organization or a team workspace, you may have access to more than one workspace within a single account. Check the account switcher at the top of the sidebar — this lets you move between your personal workspace and any organization workspaces you belong to without signing out.
Each workspace has its own conversation history and may have different settings, data controls and connected services. Verify which workspace is active before starting a session that involves organization data.
Project context that does not transfer between accounts
Conversation history, ChatGPT memory and custom instructions are account-specific. They do not transfer when you switch accounts or when someone else signs in on the same device. If a colleague uses their own account to continue your project, they have none of the context from your account's sessions.
The same gap exists across workspaces. A decision or task list that lives only in a conversation in your personal workspace is not visible in the organization workspace. For project work that needs to follow you across accounts and tools, keeping context in a record outside ChatGPT is the practical solution.
This is also relevant for contractors, freelancers and agencies working for multiple clients. Each client's project context, approved decisions and task lists should live somewhere independent of the ChatGPT account used for that work. If the account changes or access is revoked, the project record remains intact. Keeping client context in a project record outside the account means that both you and your client can access the current project state regardless of which tool either of you uses.

Keep project context across accounts and tools
A fenbs project record holds tasks, decisions and current state outside any single ChatGPT account. When you switch accounts, your assistant reads the same project context regardless of which account it connects through. Create a free account, add the project, and the next ChatGPT session — on any account — can pick up where the last one stopped.

How to do this with fenbs
- Create a free account and add a board for the project you are working on across multiple ChatGPT accounts.
- After each session, save decisions and task states to the board so the project context is not account-specific.
- Connect each ChatGPT account at Integrations — each account can connect separately and read the same project context.
- Before switching accounts, ask the current assistant to save progress in fenbs, including Where we left off.
- When you sign in to the other account and start a new session, the assistant reads the project context from fenbs and continues from the correct state.
