How to Switch From ChatGPT and Keep Your Useful Work
Move the goals, instructions, sources and unfinished tasks that matter. This destination-neutral checklist helps you test a new assistant before relying on it.

To switch from ChatGPT, save the useful work, prepare a short handoff and test it in your destination assistant. Treat a full conversation import as an option to verify with that destination, rather than a requirement for continuing your project. The goal is to preserve correct decisions and usable sources without carrying every abandoned idea along.
Tools like fenbs keep the ongoing project record outside one AI app, so supported connected assistants can start from the same rules and progress. First, though, you need to decide which parts of your current work deserve to travel.
What are the steps for a controlled switch?
- Choose one active project and list what the next assistant must deliver.
- Keep a backup of the relevant conversations and download important working files.
- Write a reviewed handoff with the goal, sources, decisions, open questions and next step.
- Check the destination account, available tools and data settings before adding work material.
- Give the new assistant a small, reversible task and compare its result with your requirements.
- Update your project record with what changed and where the next session should begin.
Start with a task you understand well enough to judge. For example, ask for a revision to one paragraph of an approved proposal before handing over the entire proposal. A short trial can reveal a missing source or misunderstood instruction while the correction is still easy.
Which information should you carry over?
Make a list of the things that would change the next answer. These usually include the desired outcome, audience, source documents, constraints, approved choices and work that remains incomplete. A pleasant conversation that produced no lasting conclusion usually does not belong in the active handoff.
| Material | Carry forward | Check before reuse |
|---|---|---|
| Current deliverable | The latest editable file and its purpose | Whether it is the version a person approved |
| Decision | The chosen option, reason and person who chose it | Whether a later decision replaced it |
| Source | The original file or working link | Whether you can open it from the destination account |
| Unfinished task | What is complete, untested and next | Whether the stated result has evidence |
| Old discussion | Only excerpts needed to explain a current issue | Whether the excerpt describes a rejected idea |
Review personal preferences separately. OpenAI explains that ChatGPT memory (opens in a new tab) can draw on several sources and does not retain every conversation detail. A request for a summary can help you spot useful context, but you should still compare it with the actual project materials.
If you are choosing the destination itself, use the ChatGPT alternatives guide; this checklist starts once you have a candidate to test. If you only want a different model inside the same app, see switching ChatGPT models.
Should you export the whole account first?
A backup and a working handoff serve different purposes. Follow OpenAI’s export instructions (opens in a new tab) for eligible account data, then inspect what you downloaded. For organization-managed work, check with the workspace owner when self-service export is unavailable.
Keep the archive as a reference and select a smaller set for the actual move. Download an important spreadsheet or document from its original location when possible, and open that copy yourself. Do not assume a transcript contains an intact editable version of every file mentioned in it.
Record the date and purpose of your backup. If you continue working in ChatGPT afterward, note which changes happened after that snapshot. Otherwise, the destination may receive a tidy packet that quietly omits the most recent approval or correction.
How should you write the first handoff?
Use a short opening note followed by references. Write the current goal in one sentence and identify the actual next action. Keep proposed choices separate from approved ones, and describe missing information directly. “Waiting for the owner to approve the wording” prevents an assistant from polishing that wording as though it were settled.
- Goal: prepare the customer onboarding guide for a person to review.
- Approved: use the short signup flow and the terminology in the attached glossary.
- Sources: the current guide, approved screenshots and the product requirements.
- Progress: the introduction is revised; the troubleshooting section still needs checking.
- Next action: compare the troubleshooting steps with the screenshots and list discrepancies.
- Boundary: suggest corrections; do not publish or contact customers.
Rewrite reusable instructions for the destination’s documented controls. ChatGPT custom instructions (opens in a new tab) are guidance supplied inside ChatGPT; copying their text does not configure another app automatically. In fenbs, the work’s agreed rules can remain with the project through its shared context workflow.
Keep the project when you change the assistant
Add the current tasks, reviewed decisions and next step to fenbs before your trial session. Connect a supported AI app and ask it to read that record before working. Save its progress afterward so returning to the previous app does not require a second migration.

What should you check in the destination?
Confirm the account and workspace you intend to use, then check the actual access available there. A source link may require a separate sign-in. A tool used in the old conversation may need its own connection or may not be available. Give the assistant a way to report missing access instead of asking it to infer the unavailable content.
Ask it to restate the deliverable, name the controlling sources and identify the next uncompleted check. Compare those answers with your handoff before requesting new work. If the restatement is wrong, repair the record first; a longer prompt rarely helps when its central decision is ambiguous.

How to do this with fenbs
- Create a free account, free for one person with no credit card, and add the project you are moving.
- Add tasks for the remaining work and record the choices people approved in Decisions and rules.
- Write Where we left off with the latest completed work, missing checks and exact next step.
- Use Integrations to connect a supported assistant over MCP, a standard way for an AI app to use an outside tool, with a browser sign-in.
- Ask the assistant to read the project context, complete the small trial task and save progress before stopping.
fenbs does not import your ChatGPT chats or move account settings. It is not the right fit if your only goal is to restore an old conversation sidebar. Its useful role is keeping a maintained work record available across supported assistant connections.
When is the switch complete enough to rely on?
You are ready to continue when the new assistant can use the required sources, respect the approved choices and produce a result you can verify. Keep the previous work accessible until that test passes. Moving a file successfully says little about whether the next session understands its status.
You can also keep both tools. Use one current record for decisions and progress, then choose an assistant for each session. The switching models topic hub covers narrower moves, including account changes and specific destinations, when those details become relevant.
