Claude Desktop Blank Screen: Checks and Recovery
A blank window in Claude Desktop usually points to a graphics rendering issue, a corrupted cache, or a display scaling mismatch. Here is how to diagnose and fix it.
Updated 5 min read
A blank window in Claude Desktop typically means the app launched but the interface failed to render. The three most common causes are a graphics driver or GPU rendering conflict, a corrupted local cache, and a display scaling setting the app did not handle correctly. fenbs keeps your project context and task notes outside the desktop app, so you can access the current state of your work in a browser while you fix the blank window.
Quick restart checks
Before doing anything else, close Claude Desktop fully and reopen it. On Mac, right-click the Dock icon and choose Quit rather than just closing the window. On Windows, right-click the system tray icon and exit before relaunching. A full quit-and-reopen clears the rendering state and resolves the blank screen in many cases.
If the blank screen returns, try restarting your computer. This reloads the graphics drivers and clears any stale session data that may be causing the rendering failure.
Also check whether your system woke from sleep rather than fully restarting. Claude Desktop can occasionally show a blank window after a sleep cycle when the GPU state was not cleanly restored. A full restart — not just sleep and wake — resets the graphics subsystem completely and is more likely to resolve the issue than closing and reopening the app alone.
Clear the app cache
A corrupted local cache is a frequent cause of blank screens in Electron-based apps like Claude Desktop. Clearing it does not delete your Anthropic account or conversation history; it only removes locally stored settings and cached interface data.
- On Mac: press Command+Shift+G in Finder, paste ~/Library/Application Support/Claude, and move the folder contents to the Trash. Reopen Claude Desktop.
- On Windows: press Win+R, type %APPDATA%\Claude, press Enter, and delete the folder contents. Reopen Claude Desktop.
- If you prefer not to delete the files immediately, move the folder to your Desktop. You can restore it if the problem persists.
Check display scaling settings
Claude Desktop uses a web-based interface internally. At certain display scale values — particularly on high-resolution screens set above 150% — the rendering engine can produce a blank or white frame. Try setting your display scaling to 100% or a standard value and relaunching the app.
On Windows, display scaling is in Settings > Display > Scale. On Mac, it is under System Settings > Displays > Resolution. Return to your preferred setting after confirming the app renders correctly, then test each scale value to find one that works.
If you use multiple monitors with different resolutions or scaling settings, moving the Claude Desktop window between screens can sometimes trigger a blank render. Try dragging the app window to each screen and checking whether the blank state is tied to a specific monitor. Disconnecting the secondary monitor and launching the app on the primary screen alone is a useful diagnostic step.
Disable hardware acceleration
Hardware acceleration uses your GPU to speed up interface rendering. On some systems, particularly those with driver issues or older graphics hardware, this causes blank or black windows in Electron apps.
Claude Desktop does not have a visible toggle for hardware acceleration in its settings as of October 2026. If you suspect this is the cause, try updating your graphics drivers. On Windows, open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, right-click your GPU, and choose Update driver. On Mac, graphics drivers are updated through System Updates.
If the blank screen appeared immediately after a graphics driver or operating system update, that update is the most likely cause. Check whether a newer driver version has been released that addresses rendering regressions, or consider rolling back the driver update if your system allows it. A blank screen that began the same day as a system update is almost always related to that update rather than a problem with the app itself.
Access your project notes while the desktop app is blank
fenbs stores your project rules, current tasks, and Where we left off in one place outside Claude Desktop. If the desktop window is blank, open claude.ai (opens in a new tab) in a browser, connect to fenbs over MCP, and ask Claude to read your project context. You can continue the session from exactly where you left off without re-explaining the work.

How to do this with fenbs
- Create a free account and add your current project with its tasks and rules.
- Connect Claude over MCP from Integrations — the same setup works for both Claude Desktop and the web interface.
- When the desktop shows a blank screen, open claude.ai in a browser and ask Claude to read your project context from fenbs.
- Continue the session in the browser. Ask Claude to save progress before you close the tab.
- Once Claude Desktop is fixed, your fenbs record is already current.
Reinstall Claude Desktop
If clearing the cache and updating graphics drivers did not help, a clean reinstall is the next step. On Mac, drag Claude from your Applications folder to the Trash, empty it, then download and install a fresh copy from claude.ai/download (opens in a new tab). On Windows, uninstall through Add or remove programs, restart, then install fresh.
After reinstalling, sign in to your Anthropic account. Your conversation history and account data are stored server-side and will be available again after you sign in. For ongoing problems, check Anthropic's status page (opens in a new tab) and the Claude Desktop MCP guide for related issues.
