How to Make a ChatGPT Group Chat: What Works Now
ChatGPT no longer lets you create or join new group chats. Here is how to continue the work, choose shared context, and keep decisions useful to the team.

You can no longer make a new ChatGPT group chat or join one through an invitation link. OpenAI is retiring the group-chat feature, so instructions that tell you to start a group from an existing conversation are outdated. Choose a supported place to continue the work instead.
If you need the team’s agreed outcomes to remain available across AI apps, fenbs can hold the decisions, tasks, and next steps. It does not host a live group chat; it keeps the work that the discussion produces.
What should you do instead of creating a group?
- Name the job you wanted the group to do: discuss ideas live, give people common reference material, or coordinate the resulting tasks.
- For live discussion, use a communication space your team already approves. Agree on how reviewed AI suggestions will be brought into it.
- For common ChatGPT context, consider a shared project and check its available invitations and access settings.
- For continuing work, record the choices people accepted, the unfinished tasks, and where the next session should start.
OpenAI’s group-chat retirement notice (opens in a new tab) is the source to check when an old invitation or tutorial fails. Repeatedly creating new links or changing accounts will not restore a retired creation workflow.
Keep the replacement modest. If two teammates need to review a draft, they may only need the draft and a clear approval question. If they are maintaining a project over several weeks, shared source material and a durable work record become more useful.
Why do older instructions show an invitation button?
Older tutorials may accurately describe the former feature. They become misleading when they present those steps as something a new user can still complete. Follow the current retirement notice rather than assuming your missing button means you chose the wrong device or account.
Distinguish a historical demonstration from current setup instructions. A video showing several people participating does not establish that you can create the same space now. Nor does an existing invitation prove that someone new can join it.
Before planning a new workflow around any collaboration feature, verify the exact action your team needs: creation, invitation, editing, or reviewing history. Those are separate capabilities. Your team can then choose a workable replacement without spending its first session trying to reproduce an unavailable interface.
What happens to an existing group conversation?
OpenAI says existing group history remains available as groups transition to read-only. A read-only conversation allows review of the messages and shared material but does not accept new messages. New participants cannot join through an old invitation.
If your team has an existing conversation, identify the decisions and unfinished work it contains. Ask the people involved to confirm the accepted result. A discussion can contain several competing suggestions, and the last message is not necessarily the agreed answer.
For a separate copy, follow the guide to exporting ChatGPT chats. Keep the export process separate from the short handoff: a record of every message is useful for reference, while a handoff tells the next person where to begin.
For example, preserve the fact that a workshop outline was approved, the reason one exercise was removed, and the outstanding venue check. The next session should not have to rediscover those facts from a long brainstorming exchange.
Can a shared project provide the context you need?
A shared ChatGPT project can keep related chats, files, and instructions available to invited members. OpenAI’s Projects documentation (opens in a new tab) explains invitations and access. It also distinguishes branching a project conversation from several people collaborating synchronously in the same chat.
Choose it for a common reference base rather than assuming it recreates live group messaging. Give the project a clear outcome, use approved source material, and explain who reviews the resulting work. Check the permissions in your own workspace before inviting people.
The broader guide to ChatGPT for business covers organizational use. For this decision, ask a narrower question: do teammates need simultaneous conversation, or can they contribute separate work using the same context?
When the result also needs to reach colleagues using other AI apps, fenbs can hold the shared decisions and next tasks through its team work record.
How should people review AI suggestions together?
Assign a person to state the question and a person to accept the outcome. They may be the same person for a small task. Ask the assistant to make assumptions visible and identify what needs checking, then have people review those points before treating the answer as a team decision.
- Separate proposals from accepted choices. A confident explanation is still a suggestion until a person approves it.
- Keep source references beside important claims so the reviewer can check the original material.
- Name the next action and the review it requires. “Looks useful” is not an instruction someone can reliably finish.
- Record uncertainty plainly. Say which source or confirmation is still missing instead of hiding the gap in polished wording.
Say a nonprofit team is preparing a volunteer orientation. The assistant can suggest an agenda, but a staff member confirms the arrival instructions and the coordinator approves the final sequence. Save those human choices separately from the earlier brainstorm.
Keep the agreement after the conversation ends
Use fenbs for the orientation project, the approved agenda decision, and the remaining review tasks. Each connected assistant can read the shared record before continuing, and History records changes. The team keeps a clear starting point even when its conversation app changes.

How to do this with fenbs
- Create a free account and try one project on a personal kanban board. Use a team kanban board when colleagues need shared access.
- Add the work that came out of the discussion as tasks. Include the problem, the plan, and the checks required before completion.
- Record choices people accepted in Decisions and rules. Leave unsettled questions open, with the information a person needs to resolve them.
- Connect supported assistants using the integration guides. Ask them to read the context before working and save Where we left off before stopping.
fenbs does not import ChatGPT conversations or replace live team messaging. If your group only needs a casual discussion with no continuing tasks, a work record may be unnecessary. It fits when people need to preserve what was agreed and continue through different assistants.
How do you check that the replacement is working?
Try one ordinary handoff. Give a teammate the agreed context and ask them to explain the current decision, the unresolved question, and their next action. Correct anything missing before adding more material. A small successful continuation is more useful than a complicated setup nobody has tested.
If you are choosing another AI app, use the ChatGPT alternatives guide for that comparison. Keep the decision about where to discuss ideas separate from where the team maintains approved work. The team brain guides cover maintaining that shared record.
