How to Export ChatGPT Work to Copilot in Usable Files
Prepare a safe, readable source packet from ChatGPT for Copilot. Keep the archive separate from the reviewed files and instructions you actually share.

To export ChatGPT work to Copilot, retrieve the conversations you need, review their contents, and prepare selected material in files your Copilot product accepts. Include a short handoff explaining the task, approved decisions, and next step. Treat a ChatGPT account export as source material to inspect, not as a ready-made Copilot account backup.
A clean source packet saves you from carrying unrelated personal information and obsolete drafts into another service. fenbs can hold the ongoing tasks and decisions separately, so the next packet starts from a reviewed work record.
What is the quickest reliable export process?
- Identify the project and conversations you need. For a small handoff, review and copy only the relevant passages.
- If you need an account archive, request the available ChatGPT data export and download it securely.
- Open your downloaded files locally. Confirm the needed conversation is present before relying on the archive.
- Extract useful passages into a separate working document. Preserve who said what and which choices a person approved.
- Remove private or unrelated material, then collect the original sources and current deliverable alongside the summary.
- Save a readable packet in supported formats and inspect it before uploading anything to Copilot.
Keep an untouched archive and a separate transfer folder. This gives you a reference if an important sentence was removed during editing. It also makes the privacy review easier: you can inspect exactly what will leave your device instead of guessing what a large download contains.
Where do you obtain the ChatGPT source material?
OpenAI documents an export route through Settings, then Data controls, then Export data, for eligible accounts and workspaces. It also provides a Privacy Portal route. Follow OpenAI’s export instructions (opens in a new tab) for current availability and download details; managed workspaces may require help from the workspace owner.
The downloaded ZIP contains chat history and other relevant account data. Inspect what your download actually includes rather than assuming a particular layout. Locate the conversations you selected, and check that the important user corrections and final decisions are present.
You may already have the finished draft or original spreadsheet outside ChatGPT. Use that current file when it is the source of truth. A transcript describing a spreadsheet is a poor substitute for the spreadsheet itself, especially when formulas, units, or filters affect the result.
How should you select and clean the material?
Read for current meaning, not just repeated words. A conversation might start with one audience and end with another, or contain an early assumption that a person later corrected. Carry the corrected instruction forward and keep any discarded option clearly labeled if its history matters.
| Material | What to put in your transfer packet |
|---|---|
| Approved instruction | The current wording, who approved it, and its scope. |
| Generated answer | Only the useful portion, labeled as a draft or a reviewed result. |
| Factual claim | Its original source and the check it still needs. |
| Personal information | Only what the task requires and you are authorized to share. |
| Unfinished work | The exact stopping point, blocker, and next action. |
Search for credentials, contact details, customer records, and material copied from private conversations. Remove or replace unnecessary identifiers in your working copy. Also check tables, comments, screenshots, and filenames; deleting a name from one paragraph does not remove it from the rest of a packet.
For a hypothetical design proposal, keep the approved audience and scope, a current draft, and relevant brand rules. Leave behind unrelated client conversations and unaccepted concepts. If a conclusion cannot be traced to evidence, label it as an assumption rather than improving its wording until it sounds certain.
Which files should you prepare for your Copilot product?
Microsoft Copilot documents support for common documents and text formats, including PDF, DOCX, TXT, JSON, CSV, and Markdown. Its file-upload guide (opens in a new tab) gives the current supported formats and attachment limits. Choose a format that preserves the material you actually need.
For instructions and decisions, a short text document is easy to inspect. For a table, preserve headers, units, and explanatory notes. If you save a PDF, open it and try selecting its text; a page that looks readable to you may still be an image that needs a different treatment.
For GitHub Copilot, prepare the relevant repository files and a concise task note rather than a document-only packet. GitHub’s IDE chat documentation (opens in a new tab) explains how context and references work in supported editors. The GitHub Copilot app overview covers that product separately.
Name files for their role and version, such as “proposal-current” and “approved-requirements.” Include a short inventory saying which file to read first. Different versions with nearly identical names force the destination assistant to guess which one controls the task.
What should the handoff document say?
Make the first page useful on its own. State the desired output, intended audience, supplied files, approved decisions, and unresolved questions. Add a clear instruction to ask about missing material instead of treating every statement in an old conversation as a requirement.
- Goal: what you want produced and how you will judge it.
- Current state: the accepted draft or implementation and what has been checked.
- Decisions and constraints: what must remain true and who chose it.
- Evidence: which file or link supports each important conclusion.
- Next action: one bounded task and any approval it requires.
Keep a separate “not yet verified” list. Moving a fluent answer between tools does not establish its accuracy. For the destination session and its first comprehension check, use transferring ChatGPT data to Copilot; that is the next step after preparing this packet.
If you are still choosing a destination, Copilot vs ChatGPT addresses that decision rather than the export process.
How to do this with fenbs
- Create a free account and add a project for the work represented in your export.
- Create tasks for unfinished deliverables. Record person-approved choices in Decisions and rules, rather than pasting an unreviewed transcript.
- Add useful background as AI context notes and save Where we left off with the next action and remaining checks.
- Use the integration guide for ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot if those are your assistants. For Microsoft Copilot, manually supply a reviewed summary and the source files it needs.
- Update the shared record after reviewing the destination output, so your next handoff uses current decisions and progress.
fenbs does not import ChatGPT archives and does not connect to Microsoft Copilot. It fits ongoing work that needs a durable record across sessions; a one-time export for personal safekeeping can simply remain a local archive.
Keep the work current between exports
Save tasks, approved decisions, and the next step in fenbs before changing assistants. ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot can connect to that shared record, while a reviewed summary can be carried manually into Microsoft Copilot.

What should you check before considering the export finished?
Open every file you plan to send. Confirm that text, tables, source links, and decision labels survived conversion. Check your packet against the current work, not just against an older conversation: a correct transcription can still describe an outdated plan.
Keep the reviewed packet dated and preserve your original material until you have tested the handoff. For the general archive procedure, see how to export ChatGPT chats. The switching models hub covers other moves; the export is ready when a reader can identify the task, trusted inputs, and next action without opening your private ChatGPT history.
