How to Bulk Delete ChatGPT Chats and Preserve Useful Work
ChatGPT lets you select multiple conversations for deletion or clear your full history in one step. Here is how each cleanup method works, what you lose when you delete, and how to preserve decisions and next steps before the conversations are gone.

ChatGPT offers two ways to remove a large number of conversations quickly: selecting and deleting multiple conversations from the sidebar, or using the "Delete all chats" option in your account settings. Deleted conversations are gone permanently — there is no trash folder or recovery option.
Before a cleanup, it is worth saving any decisions, confirmed plans or outstanding tasks from the conversations you are about to remove. Tools like fenbs keep that project record outside ChatGPT, so the useful work survives the deletion and is available to every connected assistant for the next session.
Selecting and deleting multiple conversations
In the ChatGPT sidebar, hover over a conversation. A checkbox or a three-dot menu appears, depending on the platform. On the web app, you can select multiple conversations by clicking their checkboxes and then choose to delete the selected group.
This method gives you control over which conversations stay. Work through the list, tick the ones you no longer need, and delete the selection in one step. The conversations you leave unchecked remain in your history.
For conversations you want to keep but not see in the active sidebar, archiving is an alternative to deleting. Archived chats are hidden from view but not removed. See the guide on how to archive ChatGPT chats for that approach.
Deleting all conversations at once
Go to your ChatGPT settings. Look for "Data controls" or a similar section where conversation history is managed. The option to delete all conversations is there. ChatGPT asks you to confirm before proceeding.
This removes every conversation from your account in one action. It is faster than selecting conversations individually, but it does not give you a chance to keep specific ones. Use this option only when you are ready to remove everything.
Deleting all conversations does not affect your ChatGPT account, saved memory, custom instructions or any connected services. It only removes the conversation history.
Third-party browser extensions
A search for ChatGPT bulk delete extensions will return several browser add-ons that offer additional selection controls, filtering by date or adding more granular options for removing conversations. If you use one, review what permissions it requests before installing. A browser extension that can read a ChatGPT page can see the content of your conversations.
The built-in delete options cover the most common cleanup scenarios without requiring a third-party tool. Use extensions only if the native options genuinely do not meet your needs.
What you lose when you delete
Deleting a conversation removes the entire exchange permanently. If the conversation contained a confirmed plan, a reviewed code review, an approved draft or a list of next steps, those are gone unless you moved them somewhere else before deleting.
ChatGPT's memory (the stored facts the account keeps across conversations) is separate from conversation history. Deleting conversations does not clear your saved memory. But the reasoning, context and details that existed only in the conversation text cannot be recovered.
For exporting your full conversation history before a cleanup, see how to export ChatGPT chats. For sorting or finding conversations you want to review before deleting, the page on how to sort ChatGPT chats by date explains the history and search controls.
When to clean up versus when to export
Some conversations are worth keeping in a permanent record before you delete them. A session that documented a decision-making process, reviewed a document in detail, or worked through a technical problem from multiple angles has archival value beyond the immediate task.
Consider exporting your full chat history before a large cleanup. Go to Settings, look for Data controls, and use the export option. The export gives you a file of all your conversations that you can store locally. It is not as easy to search as a live conversation list, but it provides a safety net before you remove anything substantial.
After the cleanup, the sidebar is easier to navigate. Keep future conversations focused: one project or question per conversation, named clearly at the start, with descriptive titles rather than the ones ChatGPT generates automatically. This makes each future cleanup session shorter than the last.
Save the decisions before the conversations go
Before you delete a batch of ChatGPT conversations, review them for confirmed decisions, task lists and agreed next steps. Add those to fenbs as Decisions and rules, board tasks and context notes. The project record stays available to every connected assistant even after the conversations are deleted. Create a free account and move the work you want to keep before you clear the history.

How to do this with fenbs
- Create a free account and set up a board for each active project whose conversations you are about to clean up.
- Before deleting, review the conversations for confirmed decisions, outstanding tasks and active rules. Add the decisions to Decisions and rules and the tasks to the board.
- Write "Where we left off" for each project so the next session starts from the right point even with the conversation history gone.
- Connect your AI app at Integrations so the next assistant reads the project record at the start, not a re-read of the deleted threads.
- Delete the conversations once you have moved everything you need. The board keeps the work; the conversation history is no longer the only record.
