Claude Export: Save Chats and Prepare a Useful Handoff

Request your Claude conversation export, review what it contains, and deliberately save the decisions and next steps your next session needs.

Updated 5 min read

To request a Claude export, open Settings > Privacy on the web or Claude Desktop and choose Export data. Once the download is ready, save it and check the conversations you need. Organization accounts have additional controls, so confirm which account and workspace hold the work before you begin.

The export is your saved source material. A short, checked handoff serves a different purpose: telling the next session what to do. You can manually record that handoff in fenbs; fenbs does not import Claude chats or read your conversation history.

How do you request your Claude conversation export?

  1. Sign in to the Claude account that contains the conversations you want to keep.
  2. Use the web app or Claude Desktop, open Settings, and select Privacy.
  3. Choose Export data, then wait for the download email sent to the address associated with your account.
  4. Open the download while signed in to that account. Check Claude’s instructions for the link’s current expiration period.
  5. Keep the original download and inspect a working copy for the conversations needed by your project.

Anthropic’s personal data export instructions (opens in a new tab) explain availability and the download process. They also say exports are not requested through the iOS or Android apps. If you start on a phone, use the supported route rather than assuming a missing mobile button means your work is unavailable.

Make a short inventory before the download arrives: the project, the conversations you expect, and the deliverables they refer to. For example, a student saving a research project might list the outline discussion, the revised argument, and the source-checking conversation. This gives the review a purpose beyond collecting a file.

What changes when Claude is managed by your organization?

Do not assume your personal settings can export a whole team’s work. Anthropic distinguishes individual exports from organization exports: Owners can enable members’ own exports, while Primary Owners use the organization export route. Its organization data instructions (opens in a new tab) explain the controls and who can use them.

If the button is missing, ask the responsible owner about the intended process before trying another account. Confirm what you are allowed to retain and where the downloaded material belongs. Permission to work on a project is a reason to ask the right person about an export, not a reason to copy every colleague’s conversations.

The organization guide says a member’s own export does not include the contents of uploaded files. Inventory the source documents and finished deliverables separately. Preserve authorized copies through their normal storage process, and record their locations so a later handoff does not depend on an attachment you never checked.

What should you review before trusting the saved copy?

Start with the work you actually need to continue. Find a conversation you recognize, read its important exchanges, and confirm that you can distinguish the final answer from the earlier drafts. Keep the archive private while you review; selecting material for a colleague or another assistant is a separate decision.

Check the conversation and the work it points to
ReviewQuestion to answer
Project coverageCan you locate the conversations required for this handoff?
CorrectionsWhich reply or human instruction replaced the earlier approach?
DeliverablesWhere is the actual document, design or code that someone should use?
EvidenceWhich approvals and checks can you verify from the material you reviewed?

Record gaps plainly. If you cannot find a source document or confirm an approval, say that in the handoff. Do not let a smooth summary hide the difference between “not found,” “not checked,” and “completed.” Those labels give the next person a clear choice about what to verify first.

Why does a transcript need a separate work summary?

A conversation records exploration as well as results. It can contain several proposals, rejected examples, and instructions that changed later. Someone opening the full record may still need to work out which answer to trust. A handoff makes that current state explicit while keeping the original material available for checking.

Say a design studio used Claude to draft an onboarding email. The first version promised a phone call, but the owner later approved email-only support. The handoff should identify that approved choice and the current draft, then say whether the links were tested. Simply saving the longest answer could preserve the wrong promise.

Keep the record portable by describing the work rather than relying on a conversation’s personality or style. A useful next step is “check the three signup links in the approved draft.” “Continue where Claude left off” still requires reconstruction. In fenbs, Where we left off and task progress give that next action a clear home.

How do you turn selected conversations into a checked handoff?

Read the relevant exchanges and write a compact record with evidence. An assistant can help draft it from material you are allowed to share, but compare the result with the conversation and the actual deliverable. The final summary should be something you can verify, not another answer you hope is accurate.

  • Goal and location: name the project, its task, and the current deliverable.
  • Completed work: state what changed and what remains a draft.
  • Human decisions: record who chose the current approach and why it matters.
  • Checks and uncertainty: separate passed checks, failed checks, and checks not run.
  • Next action: say where to start and what is waiting on a person.

Read the summary once as if you had never seen the chat. Could you take the next action without asking what “the latest version” means? Replace vague references with a document name, task reference, or approved source location. Leave private material in its appropriate store rather than copying it into every summary.

How fenbs helps

Give the next session a checked starting point

Manually record the useful outcomes from your Claude export in fenbs projects, tasks and Decisions and rules. Save Where we left off with the next action and outstanding checks. A connected assistant can read that shared work record before continuing, without importing your archive.

How to do this with fenbs

  1. Create a free account, free for one person with no credit card, and add the project you want to continue.
  2. Manually add the selected, reviewed work to its tasks. Include the deliverable location, what was checked, and the next action rather than pasting the entire conversation.
  3. Record choices people made in Decisions and rules, naming the person who decided. Keep proposals and unanswered questions open until a person chooses.
  4. Save project progress in Where we left off. Connect your next supported assistant using the integration guides, then ask it to read the project context before starting.

fenbs is not the right fit if your only goal is to store an unchanged account archive or recreate every old chat. Keep the original export in suitable storage. Use the shared work record for decisions, current tasks and the starting point that needs to survive a change of assistant.

How can you tell whether the next session has enough context?

Ask the next assistant to explain the current goal, the decision that controls the work, and its first action. Check its response against your saved record. If it treats an unfinished check as a completed result, correct the record or its instructions before allowing more work to depend on that assumption.

Keep account conversation exports separate from other Claude workflows; our Claude overview and Claude Code guide explain those broader contexts. For neighboring questions, use finding Claude history or the ChatGPT export guide. The AI handoffs hub covers keeping the work usable between sessions.

Questions people ask.

Can I import the download into a different personal Claude account?

Anthropic says exported data cannot be imported into another personal Claude account. Keep a saved archive separate from a checked work summary that you can use when continuing a project.

What should I do if the download link expires?

Request another export through the supported process and download it while signed in to the account that requested it. Check the vendor’s instructions for current timing.

Is an assistant’s summary the same as an export?

No. An export is downloaded account data. A summary selects and explains parts of the work, so review it against the source material and the current deliverable.

Does adding a handoff to fenbs move my Claude conversations?

No. fenbs does not import Claude conversations. You manually record the relevant work, or ask a connected assistant to record selected information that you provide and review.
