How to Transfer ChatGPT Chats to Another Chat

Carry the useful work into a fresh conversation with a checked handoff, relevant source material and the right project context.

To transfer useful ChatGPT work to another chat, prepare a checked handoff summary, supply the source material the new conversation needs, and state the next task explicitly. Carrying context forward does not mean merging two original threads. fenbs can keep a reusable work handoff outside the conversations so each connected assistant starts from the same decisions and progress.

What should you do before opening the new chat?

  1. State why you are starting again: a new phase of work, a different question, or a cleaner conversation about the same goal.
  2. Ask the current assistant to draft a handoff covering the goal, approved choices, completed work, unresolved questions and the next step.
  3. Check that draft against the original discussion and your actual files. Correct invented approvals, missing constraints and claims that untested work is complete.
  4. Start the new chat, provide the checked handoff and necessary sources, then ask it to explain its understanding before continuing.

Keep the original conversation available until the new one has successfully continued the work. The summary should be shorter than the old discussion, but it must preserve the facts that change the next action. Remove repetition before removing a critical requirement.

For example, a proposal handoff needs the audience, the approved scope and the unanswered budget question. It probably does not need every rejected opening sentence. Mark the budget as unresolved so the new assistant does not silently choose a figure.

What belongs in a reliable handoff summary?

Separate instructions, facts and uncertainty. “Use a friendly tone” is a direction. “The client approved the shorter form” is a decision. “Delivery has not been tested” is a limitation. Combining them into a vague paragraph makes it harder to see what the next assistant can safely assume.

  • Goal: the outcome you are trying to produce, the intended audience and what success means.
  • Decisions: what a person chose, why it matters, and which alternatives are no longer active.
  • Current state: what exists now, which version is current and what has actually been checked.
  • Sources: the files, links or original excerpts needed to verify the next piece of work.
  • Next action: one clear starting task, plus anything waiting for a person to answer.

Add exact wording when it matters. A required disclaimer or approved headline should travel as text, not as a recollection that it was “roughly like this.” Label copied source material clearly so the new conversation can distinguish it from your current instructions.

For recurring work, store this structure in fenbs’s work context. You can update the current state as the project moves instead of maintaining a separate aging summary in every conversation.

Can project context help the new conversation?

Yes, when the work belongs in the same project. OpenAI’s Projects guide (opens in a new tab) explains how projects group chats, files and instructions. Eligible chats can be moved into a project using the available move action, and new project conversations can use the context allowed by its memory settings.

That organizes the work; it does not turn several discussions into one literal thread. Check the project instructions and sources for outdated requirements before continuing. Starting a new conversation beside the old one will not by itself make a rejected proposal clearly rejected.

Supply the checked handoff even when related material is already in the project. It tells the new conversation which goal is current and where to begin. For work managed by an organization, review the project audience and workspace rules; our ChatGPT for business guide covers that wider context.

Is memory the same as transferring a conversation?

No. OpenAI’s memory guidance (opens in a new tab) says memory can use relevant information from available sources but does not retain every detail of every conversation. Features and controls also vary by account and workspace. Do not depend on an important project requirement being remembered without checking it.

A useful preference such as “keep answers concise” is different from the current status of a specific deliverable. The new chat needs to know whether that deliverable is a draft, approved, or waiting on a test. Put that state in the handoff rather than hoping personalization will reconstruct it.

When moving between apps, the distinction becomes even clearer: the work summary is information you can provide, while each app has its own context controls. See Claude vs ChatGPT for the broader choice of environment, and ChatGPT alternatives if you are comparing other options.

When should you supply the transcript or files?

Supply source material when the next task depends on exact wording, technical details or a claim the summary cannot establish. For a document revision, provide the actual current document. For a disagreement about an earlier instruction, provide the relevant exchange with enough surrounding context to interpret it.

OpenAI describes using exported conversations as reference in a new chat (opens in a new tab). That is reference material, not a reconstruction of the old sidebar or a transfer of account memory. The same practical distinction applies when you supply a transcript for the next session to read.

Review any broad export before uploading it. Select only the conversations the new task needs, and remove unrelated private information from the copy you provide. A larger pile of source text can give the assistant more to search without telling it which conclusions you accepted.

Before proceeding, ask the new chat to state the goal, settled choices, open questions and first action. Compare that answer with your handoff. Correct any mismatch while the original discussion is still easy to check, then begin the actual work.

How to do this with fenbs

  1. Create a free account and add the ongoing project.
  2. Save the checked background as AI context notes and record human-approved choices in Decisions and rules. Add remaining work as tasks.
  3. Connect your supported assistant through Integrations. Ask it to read the project context before working, including Rules and Where we left off.
  4. Before ending the session, ask it to save the task state, checks, open questions and next step. Start the next connected chat by reading that updated context.
How fenbs helps

Start the next chat from the current work

fenbs keeps Where we left off with the project’s tasks, decisions and context notes. A connected assistant reads that record before continuing and saves what changed at the end. You maintain one current work handoff instead of asking each new conversation to guess which old summary is right.

fenbs does not import ChatGPT chats or merge conversation threads. It is not the right fit if you only need to paste a short excerpt once. It helps when the same project repeatedly crosses chat boundaries, especially when a teammate or a different AI app takes the next session.

Use the AI handoffs library to make this read, work and save loop part of your normal process.

Questions people ask.

Should I copy the last answer or the whole discussion?

Start with a checked handoff and add the source material the next task needs. The last answer may leave out constraints or earlier corrections, while the entire discussion can bury the current decision among rejected ideas.

Can the new assistant draft the summary instead?

It can help organize material you provide, but it cannot establish what happened in a conversation it has not received. Check the summary against the original discussion and actual work before relying on it.

What if the new chat gives a different answer?

Identify whether it missed a requirement, received a different source, or is proposing a new option. Restate settled decisions and ask it to explain any conflict instead of treating a confident new answer as a replacement approval.

Should I delete the old thread after the handoff?

Keep it until you have checked the transfer and preserved anything you need as a record. The handoff is a continuation aid, not a full transcript of the original work.
