How to Export ChatGPT Data From a Business Account
Business workspace exports follow organization controls. Start with the workspace owner, confirm what can be released, and prepare an approved handoff without bypassing restrictions.

To export ChatGPT data from a Business account, contact your workspace owner: members do not have the personal-account export control for Business workspace data. OpenAI documents an owner export option for a member where that option is available. Confirm the approved route before trying to move company conversations elsewhere.
An export and a work handoff serve different purposes. A tool such as fenbs can keep approved decisions and next steps available to the team, but it does not unlock restricted ChatGPT exports or import your chat history. Start with the organization’s permission to retain and share the work.
What should you do before requesting an export?
- Confirm that the relevant conversations belong to the Business workspace. An account can have separate personal and organization workspaces.
- Describe the purpose of the request: an authorized project transition, an internal review, or another specific business need.
- Ask the workspace owner which export or data-access route is available and whether your request is approved.
- Agree on the recipient, storage destination, and allowed contents before an archive or summary is produced.
- Check the delivered material against the approved scope, then record what remains missing or needs review.
For example, a designer leaving a project might need the approved layout decision and the outstanding accessibility checks. That does not automatically justify exporting every conversation from the account. Identify the work that needs continuity first, then ask which records the organization authorizes you to transfer.
Avoid testing unofficial export extensions on company conversations while you wait. A tool that can copy text from a screen may still create an unauthorized destination for the information. Ask the owner to approve the method as well as the purpose; technical access alone does not settle the handling rules.
Who can request or perform a Business export?
OpenAI’s Business data and privacy guidance (opens in a new tab) directs members to their workspace owner. Where available, the owner selects the Business workspace, opens Members, chooses the member’s menu, and selects Export data. Treat the availability condition seriously: an absent option is a reason to ask about the supported route.
Do not treat someone’s title as proof that they have the required workspace role. Tell the administrator which workspace and member are involved, and ask who is authorized to handle the request. Keep request details factual and avoid including confidential conversation contents in an ordinary support message.

Why does the personal-account export advice not work?
The personal export workflow applies to eligible personal accounts, while managed workspaces follow their own access rules. OpenAI’s data export documentation (opens in a new tab) distinguishes these routes and directs Business users to the workspace owner. Switching to a personal workspace does not turn Business conversations into personal records.
If you previously moved personal work into a managed workspace, explain that history to the owner. Do not assume you can reverse the move or retrieve an earlier personal archive. Use the current account and workspace state to decide what to request, rather than following an old screenshot from another account type.

What should an approved project handoff include?
A handoff should let the next person continue accurately. Write the goal, the decision a person approved, completed work, checks performed, unresolved questions, and the next action. Identify source locations the recipient is allowed to open. Keep an unverified AI suggestion separate from a human decision.

Say the next designer needs to know that the client approved a shorter sign-up form. An authorized handoff could state that decision, the approving person, and the remaining browser check. It does not need to include the raw client interview or a speculative draft that was rejected. Review the summary for confidential details too: shortening text does not automatically make it safe to share.

What if access will end before the request is resolved?
Raise the deadline with the owner early. Give them a list of the specific projects that need continuity and the people taking them over. Ask who will own the unresolved export request after your access ends. Avoid a last-minute personal copy that creates a separate confidentiality problem.
If the owner authorizes a summary instead of a full archive, record that boundary and review the summary together. If no transfer is authorized, leave the records in the organization’s approved process. A useful status can say that access is ending and the owner is handling the request without pretending the handoff is complete.
