How to Turn Off ChatGPT Chat History
Use a temporary chat for a conversation you do not want in history. Review existing chats, memory and training settings separately before assuming anything was removed.

To keep a new ChatGPT conversation out of your chat history, start a temporary chat and leave it temporary. To remove conversations already saved, delete them separately; turning off model training does not hide or delete them.
Decide whether your goal is less sidebar clutter, less retained information, or a conversation without personal context. Those are different jobs. If you still need a record of approved work, fenbs can hold the decisions and progress you deliberately save without keeping a copy of every discussion.
How do you keep your next conversation out of history?
- Open a new ChatGPT conversation rather than continuing an existing saved one.
- Select Temporary before sending your first message.
- Choose Unpersonalized if you also want to exclude existing memories, custom instructions and plugins. Choose Personalized only when you want that existing context used.
- Check the temporary-chat indicator, then begin. Avoid saving the conversation as a regular chat if your goal is to keep it out of history.
OpenAI documents this sequence in its temporary-chat guide (opens in a new tab). Temporary chats do not create or update memories while temporary. Saving one converts it into a regular chat, so review that action as a change in how the conversation will be handled.
Use an ordinary, nonsensitive test message the first time. Confirm you recognize the indicator before entering anything important. An old tutorial may describe controls you no longer see, so follow the current guide and the options available in your account.
Which setting matches what you actually want to stop?
| Your goal | Control to review | What to check separately |
|---|---|---|
| Keep a new conversation out of history | Temporary chat | Whether you later save it as a regular chat |
| Remove an existing saved conversation | Delete chat | Separate memories, files and copies elsewhere |
| Clean up the regular sidebar | Archive chat | The conversation remains in the account |
| Stop future model-training use of new chats | Improve the model for everyone | History and memory settings |
The training toggle is under Settings, then Data controls. OpenAI explicitly says that switching it off leaves conversations in history; its Data controls documentation (opens in a new tab) explains the distinction. Do not treat a switch with the word improve as a delete command.
Write your goal in a sentence before changing settings: “I do not want this draft saved in my conversation list.” That gives you a concrete result to verify. “Make everything private” leaves too many different settings and audiences undefined. Our AI governance guides cover the broader decisions around work data.
What should you do about conversations already saved?
Review the specific chat, open its more options menu, select Delete, and confirm. For bulk cleanup, inspect the Data controls options carefully before acting. OpenAI provides the individual and bulk steps in its deleting and archiving guide (opens in a new tab).
Read the confirmation rather than deleting by habit. You may need a record of an approval, a reference you cannot easily find again, or a work result covered by your organization’s retention requirements. Keep any required record in an approved place before removing your convenient copy.
Archiving is useful for tidying, but it is not deletion. For a broader cleanup routine, see managing ChatGPT chat history. If the useful part is a work decision, save that approved decision in fenbs’s work record instead of preserving a long conversation just to keep one sentence.
Does removing history also remove memory and files?
Do not assume that a chat, remembered information and an uploaded file are one object. OpenAI explains that saved memories are separate from chats in its Memory guide (opens in a new tab). Removing a source conversation alone may leave a saved memory behind.
Review any relevant Memory controls and separately saved files when your goal is to remove information rather than just its conversation. Make a short checklist using the information itself: the draft, the name in the draft, and the attached spreadsheet. Then check each location where you deliberately placed it.
This is also why an empty sidebar is weak evidence. It tells you what the interface is showing, not every place information might remain. OpenAI’s retention guide (opens in a new tab) describes deletion exceptions and separately saved Library files. Read it before assuming that leaving a page means immediate erasure.
What work should you preserve before a cleanup?
Keep only what another work session needs and you are permitted to retain: the task’s current state, the person’s decision, the reason, the source to consult, and the next action. Exclude brainstorming that never became an instruction. Remove personal details that do not change the next step.
For example, a design studio might retain “Use the approved short contact form; delivery testing remains” without retaining the client’s exploratory comments. Ask a person to check the summary before it becomes shared context. A concise record still needs an owner who can correct it.
Keep the choice of record separate from the choice of model. The Claude and ChatGPT comparison and ChatGPT alternatives guide help evaluate other apps, but changing apps does not decide what your team is allowed to retain.
Keep the approved work, with its author
Save the task, decision and next step in fenbs when you want to remove the surrounding chat. History records who changed the work, whether that was a person or an assistant. fenbs does not import ChatGPT chats or change ChatGPT’s privacy settings.

How to do this with fenbs
- Create a free account and add one project whose approved work you need to retain.
- Add the current task and its next step. Save a person’s approved decision in Decisions and rules, without copying the entire conversation.
- Use the integration guide to connect a supported assistant. Tell it which work information it may record and which details must stay out.
- Ask the assistant to read the project context before working and save progress before stopping. Review History when you need to see who changed the record.
A personal account is free for one person, with no credit card. fenbs is not the right fit if you only want to hide a conversation or change OpenAI’s retention settings. Use ChatGPT’s controls for those jobs; use a separate work record only when you actually need one.
How can you confirm the cleanup did what you intended?
Check the result against your original sentence. For a new temporary conversation, verify the mode before starting and do not save it. For old chats, review the selected account and workspace, the relevant history view, and any separate locations in your checklist.
If this is work information, tell the responsible person what you changed and what remains. “Removed the saved draft; approved task summary retained” is a useful report. Avoid claiming that every copy disappeared when you only changed your own account view.
