Does Gemini Have Memory Like ChatGPT? What Each Can Recall
Yes, Gemini can carry information between conversations, but the available controls and account requirements differ from ChatGPT. Here is how to check what your assistant can actually remember.

Yes. Gemini offers memory and personalization across conversations, including past-chat recall and, for eligible accounts, information you ask it to remember. It resembles ChatGPT memory in purpose, but the available controls, account requirements, and boundaries differ. Check your own settings before relying on either assistant to carry a fact into tomorrow’s conversation.
For work you need to carry between supported assistants, fenbs keeps an explicit project record outside either chat history. That gives you a place for the approved decision even when a new conversation does not recall the discussion behind it.
What kind of memory does each assistant offer?
Start with the difference between remembering you and remembering the work. A preference such as “use plain language” can improve many conversations. A decision such as “the client approved the short proposal” needs a project, a source, and a clear meaning. Having the first kind of memory does not guarantee the second kind is complete.
| Tool | Useful for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini | Personalized conversations using supported memory features. | Whether your Google account and chat type support the feature you want. |
| ChatGPT | Personalized conversations and work kept inside ChatGPT projects. | Which memory controls and project boundary apply in your account. |
| fenbs | Explicit tasks, decisions, rules, and progress read by supported connected assistants. | It does not import either service’s memories or reproduce personal chat recall. |
This is a comparison of memory behavior, rather than a ranking of every feature. For writing, research, and other everyday differences, see Gemini vs. ChatGPT. Pick the assistant for the task, then check whether its remembered context is suitable for that task.
Can Gemini use something from an earlier conversation?
Google documents memory of past Gemini chats (opens in a new tab). Availability depends on the account and feature, and the documented setup requires a personal Google account with Keep Activity enabled. A work or school sign-in should not be assumed to have the same behavior.
Google separately explains remembering information and adding instructions (opens in a new tab). Explicit remembering has its own eligibility requirements; instructions and past-chat memory should not be treated as interchangeable switches. Follow the current page for the account you actually use, rather than a screenshot from someone else’s subscription.
Try a harmless example: tell Gemini you prefer short explanations, then begin a new eligible conversation and request an explanation. Inspect the result and the settings together. One answer that happens to be short does not establish why it was short, so also ask whether past chats contributed.
Do not test with a private client name or a secret you plan to remove afterward. A made-up project called Cedar Studio is enough. The useful observation is whether information crosses into a new conversation under known settings, and whether you can correct it when the requirement changes.
Does ChatGPT remember exactly the same things?
No shared list connects the two products. OpenAI’s memory documentation (opens in a new tab) describes relevant information carried forward through the memory features available to your account. It also explains that memory does not retain every conversational detail. A familiar-sounding answer is not evidence that the entire earlier discussion is present.
Treat remembered information as an aid to conversation. When an answer depends on the exact approved wording, supply the wording or the current source. This matters even if the assistant remembers the general topic correctly: “the client liked the proposal” does not tell you which version they approved or whether changes remain.
Both assistants can therefore feel familiar without holding a complete work record. Ask each to distinguish information you supplied now, information it recalled, and assumptions it made. That request is a way to inspect the answer; it does not make the assistant’s explanation infallible.
Keep a short correction when a remembered statement is too broad. For example, “Use short answers for status updates; explain design feedback fully.” That is easier to apply than competing preferences collected from unrelated chats. Scope matters more than accumulating a large number of remembered details.
Say a three-person studio changes a delivery date after the client approves a revised scope. The useful context is the new date, the scope it covers, and the work still awaiting approval. Remembering that the studio works on websites is helpful background, but it cannot substitute for those facts. Put the current agreement where someone can inspect it, then ask the assistant to use that source for the update. This makes a missed recollection a correctable gap instead of a silent change to the client’s agreement.
Will memory stay inside one project?
A project boundary is different from a personal preference. OpenAI documents default and project-only memory (opens in a new tab); the latter limits conversational references to that project. Our ChatGPT project memory guide covers the boundary question in more detail. Check the current setting rather than inferring it from the project name.
Google’s custom Gem instructions and files (opens in a new tab) provide another way to supply task context. A reusable instruction setup is not proof that personal past-chat memory reaches that setup. Check the documentation for the particular feature before assuming everything in the main assistant follows you there.
For a designer working with two clients, write two separate approved project summaries. Each should identify the audience, current deliverable, decisions, and unresolved questions. Even where a product offers useful boundaries, avoid placing another client’s information into the wrong conversation in the first place.
A project record should also distinguish the person’s preference from the client’s requirement. “I like informal writing” does not override “this client requires formal language.” In fenbs project context, keep that client requirement with the relevant work so the next connected assistant can read its scope.
Keep the approved context separate from recall
Add the project goal, current tasks, and the decisions a person approved to fenbs. Ask a connected assistant to read those records before continuing. You can review what the project says without asking a chat app to reconstruct the conversation.

How can you check whether memory is helping?
Use the same small task in both apps. A fair check compares your actual accounts under known settings, with the same starting information. It should measure whether the assistant follows a useful detail and accepts a correction, rather than whether it produces the most confident answer.
- Write one harmless preference and one made-up project fact. Keep the original text so you can compare the answer with it.
- Confirm which memory controls are available and enabled. Note whether you are testing an ordinary conversation or a special project or feature.
- Start another eligible conversation and ask a question that needs the fact. Do not put the answer into your question.
- Correct the project fact and repeat with a fresh conversation. Record whether the assistant uses the current version or repeats the old one.
- Ask an unrelated question. Check whether the project detail intrudes where it does not belong.
Keep the observations narrow. One successful test means the tested detail worked in that situation. It does not establish complete recall, permanent storage, or a privacy boundary. If the answer is inconsistent, preserve the source and use an explicit project instruction instead of inventing a capacity explanation.
For a deeper evaluation after establishing that both accounts have the feature, use the Gemini and ChatGPT memory comparison. It focuses on which controls fit a particular workflow, rather than the basic question of whether memory exists.
What happens when you change assistants?
Do not expect a preference saved in Gemini to appear in ChatGPT, or the reverse, just because you use the same email address. Write a reviewed summary of the work you want to continue. Include the current decision, the evidence supporting it, and the next action. Leave unrelated personal information behind.
There is also a product distinction within a brand. The Gemini web app and Gemini CLI are different tools; the latter is a command-line assistant. fenbs has a supported connection for Gemini CLI. Its availability does not mean fenbs connects to every Gemini surface or reads your Google chat history.
Use the supported integration guides for the actual app you want to connect. ChatGPT connects to fenbs through a developer-mode app; follow OpenAI’s current availability guidance linked from the setup instructions. A connection supplies access to the work record, rather than merging two vendors’ private memories.
Continue from the same project facts
Connect supported assistants to the same fenbs project and ask each to read its current context. Before a session ends, save Where we left off with what changed and what remains. The next assistant can start from that record without receiving a copy of your personal memory settings.

How to do this with fenbs
- Create a free account. fenbs is free for one person, no credit card.
- Add one project and its current tasks. Write the goal and the approved facts the next session needs.
- Record the person’s decisions and continuing rules in Decisions and rules. Keep assumptions open instead of saving them as approvals.
- Connect a supported assistant, such as ChatGPT or Gemini CLI, following its setup guide. Ask it to read the project context before starting.
- Save progress before stopping. Open a fresh session and check that the assistant can explain the current decision and next action from the record.
fenbs is not the right fit if you only want an assistant to remember your favorite foods or preferred tone. It keeps work, and it does not import ChatGPT or Gemini memories. For broader explanations of these distinctions, browse the AI memory topic.
