Is Gemini Memory Better Than ChatGPT? Compare Your Workflow
The better memory is the one whose controls fit your work. Compare preferences, recall, correction, and project boundaries before trusting either assistant with an ongoing project.

Gemini memory is not automatically better than ChatGPT memory. Choose by the controls available in your accounts, how easily you can correct a remembered fact, and whether the project boundary fits your work. Neither a friendly answer nor a long conversation establishes accurate recall of an approved decision.
For decisions that need to survive a change of assistant, fenbs keeps a reviewed work record outside personal memory. That lets you evaluate the assistants for their answers while maintaining one current account of the project.
Which differences should decide your choice?
Separate convenience from control. Remembering your preferred answer format is convenient. Being able to identify and correct the source of an outdated requirement is a control you can inspect. For ongoing work, put more weight on the second when the consequences of using the wrong fact are significant.
| Option | A reason to choose it | A reason to use something else |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini memory | Its available personalization controls fit how you already use Gemini. | Your account or chosen feature lacks the recall behavior you need. |
| ChatGPT memory and projects | You want available memory controls alongside project-specific context in ChatGPT. | The work needs to remain available outside ChatGPT or its project boundaries do not fit. |
| fenbs | You need explicit shared work context for supported connected assistants. | You want automatic personal-memory import or a record of everything said in a chat. |
For the basic availability question, see whether Gemini has memory like ChatGPT. For the broader choice between the apps, use Gemini vs. ChatGPT. Here the question is narrower: which memory behavior is useful and manageable for your actual work?
Are you comparing features your accounts actually have?
Google’s past-chat memory guidance (opens in a new tab) lists account and activity requirements. OpenAI’s memory guide (opens in a new tab) says controls vary by plan, region, platform, and workspace. Compare the controls you can use, rather than the largest feature list either vendor advertises.
Make a short account inventory before testing: personal or work sign-in, app or browser, visible memory controls, and whether you are in an ordinary conversation. Do not include private account identifiers in a shared evaluation. The purpose is to make the test repeatable, not to collect personal details.
If a feature is missing, follow the official account guidance or ask your administrator. Do not assume an empty memory screen means the assistant has forgotten everything. It may mean you are looking at a different account or a different control. Equally, a remembered answer does not prove that an unavailable feature has appeared.
Define the work you want to support. “Help me write recurring client updates” is specific enough to test. “Remember everything” is not. Write down the current project facts that a useful update needs, then inspect whether the assistant applies those facts correctly in a fresh session.
Which one handles preferences more usefully?
Use a preference with a clear scope, such as “For internal status updates, use short paragraphs and finish with open questions.” Google documents instructions and explicitly remembered information (opens in a new tab) as features with their own controls. In ChatGPT, inspect the memory or instruction controls your account exposes before choosing where to save the equivalent preference.
Ask both assistants for the same two outputs: an internal status update and a detailed explanation for a new teammate. A useful preference should improve the update without forcing every answer into the same short format. Broad preferences often cause frustration because the wording never described the exception.
Then change one part of the preference. Ask for open questions at the beginning rather than the end, and check a fresh conversation. Compare how easy it is to find and correct the saved instruction, not just whether one answer happens to follow it.
Keep subjective style separate from required content. You might prefer a casual voice while your client requires formal wording. Save the client requirement with its project. If the assistant favors your general preference over that requirement, the problem is a conflict to resolve, not a reason to add more vague memories.
How should you judge recall of past work?
Check recall against a reference you control. Use a fictional project with an initial decision, a later revision, and a pending approval. The assistant should distinguish all three. An answer that combines them into one confident summary is less useful than an answer that says the approval is unresolved.
- Write the reference first: a proposal has two approved sections, one revised section, and one question waiting on a person.
- Supply the same information to each assistant in an eligible conversation. Keep the text equivalent rather than improvising different stories.
- Start fresh conversations and ask what is approved and what should happen next. Avoid putting the answer in the question.
- Compare the responses with the reference. Mark missing facts, stale facts, invented approvals, and appropriate statements of uncertainty separately.
- Repeat after a correction. Check whether the correction is applied without turning a project detail into a rule for unrelated work.
This is a practical check, not a benchmark study. A successful result applies to the task, account, and settings you tested. Repeat the small check when your workflow changes. Do not infer that one assistant has unlimited or permanent memory because it answered several examples correctly.
Weight mistakes by their effect on the work. Forgetting a preferred greeting is usually easy to fix. Inventing approval for a deliverable changes what someone may do next. Keep those outcomes separate in your notes rather than giving each remembered detail an equal score. Also record how long it takes you to identify the wrong source and repair the instruction. The assistant that fits your workflow is the one you can keep accurate with reasonable effort, not necessarily the one that repeats the most background details.
For exact work conclusions, fenbs project context supplies a record that a person can review before the assistant reads it. You still check the resulting answer, but you have a current source to compare it against.
Keep an answer key for the actual project
Record the decisions people approved, the tasks still open, and the next step in fenbs. Ask a supported connected assistant to read that context before drafting. The work record gives you something concrete to check when personal recall is incomplete.

Which project boundaries can you inspect?
OpenAI’s projects documentation (opens in a new tab) describes default and project-only memory. That is an explicit boundary to examine when work stays in ChatGPT. Our project memory guide focuses on the detailed boundary question; check the vendor’s current controls when configuring it.
Do not assume that a named chat, a reusable instruction setup, and a project boundary are equivalent across products. In Gemini, verify the memory behavior documented for the feature you actually use. A title that says “Client A” is organizational labeling; by itself, it does not establish what other conversations can reference.
For a studio working with two clients, the evaluation question is practical: can you clearly tell which sources are available to each task? Check both what is allowed in and what might be reused elsewhere. A successful recall test cannot prove a privacy guarantee, so use documented controls for that decision.
If the boundary is unclear, keep the context narrow and ask the account administrator or vendor for clarification. Do not run an experiment with confidential client material to discover where it might surface. A made-up project is sufficient for testing behavior while you establish the documented limits.
Can you keep one project record when switching?
The most useful choice may be to keep personal preferences in each app and project facts in one maintained record. You can enjoy conversational personalization while treating the current decision, evidence, and next action as explicit information. That avoids choosing a permanent assistant solely because it knows some project history.
Write a handoff containing the goal, approved choices, remaining work, and unresolved questions. Include what was checked and what was only drafted. A person should be able to review it without opening the entire chat. Correct optimistic or ambiguous language before letting a second assistant rely on it.
fenbs supports ChatGPT and Gemini CLI, among other named assistants. Gemini CLI is a command-line tool; support for it does not mean the Gemini web app reads fenbs automatically. Follow the supported integration instructions for the app you use, and manually supply reviewed context where a supported connection is unavailable.
Change assistants without changing the agreed facts
Save the project’s current state in Where we left off, then ask the next supported connected assistant to read it. Decisions and rules explain what the person approved, and tasks show what remains. fenbs does not import either vendor’s memories or read your private chat history.

How to do this with fenbs
- Create a free account. fenbs is free for one person, no credit card.
- Add the project you used in your evaluation, with its current tasks and the approved facts you want maintained.
- Put continuing human instructions in Decisions and rules. Record project choices separately from unresolved proposals.
- Connect a supported assistant, such as ChatGPT or Gemini CLI. Ask it to read the rules and current project context before answering.
- Save progress at the end of the session. Check the next assistant’s summary against the record before assigning further work.
fenbs is not the right fit for a personal profile that automatically follows you into every AI app. It keeps work through supported connections, and someone must maintain the record. If native personalization meets your needs, use it; the AI memory topic covers the related control and troubleshooting questions.
