AI Has No Memory? Check What Carries Between Sessions

An assistant that forgets your work may be missing the right context, using a different project, or running with memory off. Check the source before rebuilding the conversation.

If your AI seems to have no memory, first check whether the missing information is in the current chat, a saved memory, or a different project. An assistant failing to recall something does not, by itself, tell you whether the information was deleted or simply unavailable for that answer.

For ongoing work, fenbs can keep a deliberate progress record outside the chat, giving your next connected assistant a place to check. First, though, work through the checks below so you know which part of the handoff failed.

What should you check first?

  1. Choose one missing fact, such as an approved heading or an unfinished review. Find the message or document where it was actually recorded.
  2. Check the account, workspace, project, and conversation you are using now. Compare them with where you saved the fact.
  3. Open the memory controls for that particular app. Look for the saved information and whether memory is enabled for this conversation.
  4. If the information is in a file or outside tool, verify that the assistant can read that source in this session.
  5. Give the assistant the confirmed fact and its source, then ask it to explain the next step before resuming work.

Change one thing at a time. Turning several settings on and opening another project might make the answer improve, but it leaves you unsure which change helped. A small, repeatable check is more useful when you need tomorrow’s session to work too.

Which kind of information did you expect to carry over?

Locate the missing information before changing settings
InformationWhere to lookUseful next action
An exact sentence from an earlier replyThe original conversation or a saved documentSupply the passage instead of asking for a reconstruction.
A recurring preferenceThe app’s memory or personalization controlsInspect the saved preference and correct its wording.
A project rule or reference fileThat project’s instructions and sourcesOpen the intended project and confirm the source is present.
The latest task statusA maintained progress recordRead the current status and separate completed work from pending checks.

These are different storage and reading paths. A chat may contain a sentence without a separate memory entry existing for it. A reference document can be available without the assistant selecting the passage you meant. For the underlying concept, see AI memory explained; this checklist focuses on finding the missing connection.

Write your expectation precisely: “I need the approved headline from the source document,” rather than “remember the campaign.” That makes the test possible to judge. It also avoids rewarding an assistant for producing a plausible answer that happens to sound familiar.

Could a setting explain the missing recall?

Check the vendor’s controls rather than relying only on the assistant’s description of itself. Anthropic’s chat search and memory guide (opens in a new tab) distinguishes memory from searching past chats and lets users turn memory off for an individual chat. A visible conversation therefore does not establish which memory features were active.

Use a harmless preference for a test, such as your preferred heading style. Review what the app saved, start a suitable new conversation, and ask a question where that preference should matter. Compare the result with the saved entry. Do not use a password, client record, or other sensitive detail to test recall.

If a control is missing, check the vendor’s eligibility and organization settings through its documentation. Avoid repeatedly changing unrelated privacy settings in the hope that one restores context. Decide what you want the app to keep before enabling a feature.

Are you in the right project or workspace?

Find the original source in the same account and work area you are asking the assistant to use. A project name that looks familiar is not proof that it contains the approved document. Open the source itself and check its contents, version, and relevance to the current task.

Scope can differ even inside one product. GitHub’s Copilot Memory documentation (opens in a new tab) distinguishes repository facts, which belong to that repository, from personal preferences. Do not assume that remembering something in one work area makes it available everywhere else.

If you moved from one AI app to another, ask what record you actually transferred. A description of a project is different from its approved decisions and unfinished tasks. The guide to portable AI memory covers keeping useful context available across apps.

What if the old chat exists but the answer is wrong?

Open the original passage and compare it with the new answer. Ask the assistant to identify the source it used, or say it cannot find one. Its confident recollection is something to check, not evidence that it read the right record.

Say a designer approved a short contact form, but a new conversation proposes the longer version again. Give the assistant the approval and ask it to revise the proposal against that decision. Then find where the longer version was still presented as current and correct that working record.

This repairs both today’s answer and tomorrow’s starting point. Keep exact approvals in a record you can inspect; use recollection as a convenience. With fenbs, the current task and Where we left off give the next session an explicit place to begin.

How fenbs helps

Give the next session a starting point you can check

Add the project’s confirmed facts as AI context notes and its unfinished work as tasks in fenbs. Ask your connected assistant to read the context before working and save progress before it stops. You can inspect the record instead of guessing what survived the last chat.

How to do this with fenbs

  1. Create a free account, free for one person with no credit card, and add the project whose context keeps getting lost.
  2. Add the current tasks and a few confirmed AI context notes. Record a person’s approved choices in Decisions and rules, keeping proposals separate.
  3. Follow the guide in Integrations for your AI app. MCP, a standard connection to outside tools, lets a supported assistant read and update the work after browser sign-in.
  4. Ask the assistant to read the project context, explain what remains, and check its answer against the tasks before continuing.
  5. Before stopping, ask it to save task progress and Where we left off, including what was checked, what is uncertain, and the next action.

fenbs does not import your chat history or restore deleted memories. If you only want an assistant to remember a personal writing preference, its own settings may be enough. The fenbs workflow fits work that needs a maintained record between sessions or assistants.

How can you tell the problem is fixed?

Start a fresh session and ask for the current decision, the unfinished task, and the evidence still missing. Check all three against the record. A useful restart should recognize that a draft exists while approval is pending, rather than calling the whole task complete.

Repeat the check when a different person or assistant takes over. The team memory guide covers that shared handoff, and the AI memory hub collects related troubleshooting guides. Save what the next action depends on, then verify that the next session actually reads it.

Questions people ask.

Does forgetting prove an AI app deleted my data?

No. The information might still exist but be outside the current conversation, project, or enabled memory features. Check the original source and the account controls before drawing conclusions about deletion.

Will asking an assistant to remember everything solve this?

That is too broad to verify. Save specific preferences through the app’s controls and keep exact work decisions in an inspectable record. Check the result in a new session.

Should I paste my entire old conversation into the next one?

Usually a short, checked summary plus the necessary source passages is easier to review. Include the goal, approved decisions, current task status, and next action, without unrelated or sensitive material.

Can a saved handoff make recall guaranteed?

No. It gives the assistant a source to read and gives you something to check. You still need to confirm that the assistant used the current record and understood what remains unfinished.
