Does Claude Cost Money? Free Access and Paid Plans
Claude is free to start on claude.ai with no credit card required. Paid subscriptions and API billing unlock heavier use, more capable models and team features. Here is how the tiers work.

Claude does not require payment to start. You can sign up at claude.ai with an email address, no credit card, and begin using it immediately. A free tier gives you access to a capable Claude model for writing, analysis and coding questions. Usage is capped, and when the cap is reached you can wait for the reset or move to a paid plan.
Paid subscriptions exist for people who use Claude heavily, need the most capable model, or use team features. For developers building products on Claude, the API charges per token rather than a monthly fee. If you switch between assistants based on what is available, tools like fenbs keep your project context portable across all of them.
The free tier: what it gives you
The free tier on claude.ai gives you a current Claude model, multi-turn conversations, file and image uploads, and access to Claude Projects for organizing work around a topic. For light to moderate daily use — a few sessions a day, tasks of moderate length — many users stay within the free limit without issue.
The limit is not a fixed number of messages per day; Anthropic adjusts it based on demand and recent use. When you hit it, Claude shows you how long until the reset. The free tier does not include Claude Code (the terminal coding assistant) or the highest-capacity models.
Claude Pro: the personal paid subscription
Claude Pro raises the usage budget and unlocks the most capable models available to personal subscribers. It also gives priority access when Claude is under load, which matters for people who use it during business hours when demand peaks.
Pro is aimed at individuals using Claude regularly for real work — drafting, editing, reading long documents, coding with Claude in the browser — who find the free limit interrupts their workflow. For the current price and the exact model access Pro provides, check the Anthropic pricing page (opens in a new tab).
Claude Max: for heavy use and Claude Code
Claude Max carries a higher price and a significantly larger usage allowance. It is designed for users who run long sessions, work with large files, or use Claude Code — the terminal-based coding assistant that reads and edits files in your local project.
If your work involves extended coding sessions, processing many long documents in a day, or using Claude as a primary tool rather than a secondary one, Max is worth checking. If you hit the Pro limit regularly, Max is the next step. For the current pricing, see the Anthropic pricing page (opens in a new tab).
Keep your work portable across plans and assistants
When a plan limit interrupts your session, fenbs keeps your project context — tasks, Decisions and rules, Where we left off — outside any billing tier. Connect a different supported assistant until Claude is available again, or move to a different Claude tier. Your project is already in fenbs either way. Free to start at /register.

Claude Projects on the free plan
Claude Projects lets you set a system prompt, attach documents and organize conversations around a particular topic or role. It is available to free users. Projects give each conversation the same starting context, which is useful for work you return to regularly.
The limit that applies is still the free tier's message cap. Projects do not give you a separate usage budget; they just make each session start in a better-configured state. Having a well-set-up Project can reduce the total messages you need because the model starts with more context each time.
Claude Cowork: team access
Claude Cowork is the team product. It provides a shared workspace with member management, shared Projects and a higher per-seat usage allowance. Pricing is per seat; check the Anthropic website for the current rate and what each plan tier includes.
Cowork is for teams that want everyone using Claude from a shared workspace with common Projects. For individuals whose teams do not need that structure, the personal Pro or Max plans cover normal use. See what is Claude Cowork for details on the team-specific features.
The API: a different kind of billing
The Anthropic API is for developers building products that use Claude. Billing is per token — you pay for what you use rather than a fixed monthly fee. This makes it the right choice when usage is irregular or when you are building Claude into a workflow that another application controls.
New API accounts sometimes receive trial credits; check the Anthropic website for current offers. The API is not a way to get cheaper access to claude.ai; it is a different interface aimed at developers. For how the API works and when to use it, see the claude API guide.
How to do this with fenbs
- Create a free account on fenbs. No credit card required.
- Add your project and write the instructions, tasks and Decisions and rules you would otherwise type at the start of each Claude session.
- Connect Claude to your fenbs project over MCP. See Integrations for the current steps.
- If a plan limit interrupts a session, another connected assistant can continue from the same Where we left off note in fenbs.
- When you upgrade a plan, reconnect Claude and continue with the same project context.
