Does Claude Have a Free Version? What You Can Do With It
Yes, Claude has a free tier on claude.ai. You can use it without a subscription for many everyday tasks. Here is what the free version gives you, where the limits are, and what a paid plan adds.

Claude has a free version. You can sign up at claude.ai without entering a credit card and use it for writing, reading, analysis and coding questions right away. The free tier uses a capable Claude model and has no time limit, but it does cap how much you can send in a given period.
When the free limit is reached, Claude asks you to wait or upgrade. For readers who use Claude alongside other assistants, tools like fenbs keep your project context and rules outside any one AI app, so you can continue in a different assistant when limits apply and return to Claude when they reset.
What you get on the free tier
The free tier on claude.ai gives you access to a current Claude model, though typically not the most powerful one available to paid subscribers. You can have multi-turn conversations, upload documents and images, and use Claude Projects to organize conversations around a topic.
For everyday writing tasks — drafting emails, summarizing documents, editing a paragraph, working through a coding problem — the free tier is enough for light-to-moderate use. Heavy daily use will hit the limit within a few sessions.
For the current model available on the free tier and the exact message limit before a pause, check the Anthropic plans page (opens in a new tab). Anthropic adjusts these details periodically, and the page carries the current numbers.
What changes with a paid subscription
Claude Pro and Claude Max both increase the usage budget and unlock access to the most capable models, including the full version of Claude currently on the Pro or Max tier. Max carries a higher price and a larger usage allowance, aimed at users who send long documents or use Claude Code heavily.
Paid subscribers also get priority access when Claude is under heavy load, which matters if you depend on it during peak hours. Claude Projects is available across tiers, including free, though some features within it may require a subscription.
Claude Code — the terminal-based coding assistant — is not included in the free tier. It requires either a paid subscription that includes it or an Anthropic API account. See what is Claude Code if you are deciding whether that tool fits your work.
Claude for teams: Claude Cowork
Claude Cowork is Anthropic's team product, giving a workspace with shared Projects and member management. It is separate from the personal plans. If you are using Claude for a team's shared work rather than your own tasks, Cowork is the relevant tier to evaluate. For what that product includes, see what is Claude Cowork.
Keep your work when limits apply
When a usage limit interrupts a session, fenbs keeps your project context safe. Add your tasks, instructions and Decisions and rules to a fenbs board, then connect a different supported assistant until Claude is available again. Your context is already there — no re-explaining needed. Free to start at /register.

The API: a different kind of free access
The Anthropic API is not a free product, but new API accounts sometimes receive trial credits. The API is for developers building applications on Claude, not for everyday conversation use. You pay per token rather than a monthly subscription. See claude API for how that works.
If you are building a product that uses Claude, the API is the right path. If you are using Claude for your own work, claude.ai with a free or paid account is the right starting point. The API and the website are separate ways to access Claude; having an account on one does not give you the other.
Your claude.ai account and your Anthropic API account are managed separately. API credits and subscription usage do not share a pool; a message sent through the website does not use your API credit balance. If you use both, check each account's usage and limits independently.
Free tier versus paid: which is right for you
The free tier is a good starting point. Use it for a week doing your actual tasks, not synthetic tests. If you find yourself hitting the limit regularly during real work sessions, the Pro subscription is worth evaluating. If you need the highest usage budget and the most capable model for intensive work, Max is the relevant tier to check.
If you are not hitting the limit, the free tier is doing the job. Start there and upgrade based on real friction, not speculation about what you might need. Most everyday tasks — writing, editing, summarizing, answering questions — are well within what the free tier handles. A paid plan is useful when the limit interrupts real work, not before.
How to do this with fenbs
- Create a free account on fenbs. A personal board is free with no credit card.
- Add your project, tasks and Decisions and rules. Write the instructions you would otherwise retype at the start of each Claude session.
- Connect Claude to fenbs over MCP from Integrations. At the start of each session, ask Claude to read the project context.
- If a daily limit interrupts the session, another supported assistant can pick up from the same Where we left off note in fenbs.
- When Claude is available again, reconnect and continue from the same project context.
