GPT vs. ChatGPT: What's the Difference?
GPT is a model; ChatGPT is an application. The distinction matters when you are choosing which to use, building on top of OpenAI, or trying to keep your work portable as models change.

GPT is a model family developed by OpenAI. ChatGPT is the application OpenAI built on top of those models. The names are easy to confuse because OpenAI uses both, and the application is named after the model family it was originally built on.
The distinction matters when you are choosing between OpenAI products, building an application with the API, or switching models without losing your project context. Tools like fenbs keep the work outside the model, so when OpenAI updates GPT or you move between apps, your project record stays in place. See ChatGPT alternatives for a broader look at non-OpenAI options.
What GPT means
GPT stands for Generative Pre-trained Transformer. It describes a type of large language model architecture: the model is pre-trained on large amounts of text, then fine-tuned for specific uses. The GPT name applies to a series of OpenAI models — GPT-4o, GPT-4.1 and the o-series reasoning models are all part of OpenAI's current model range.
GPT models are the underlying technology. They are accessed through the API by developers, through ChatGPT by consumers, and through tools like GitHub Copilot by developers working in editors. The same base model can power multiple applications, and different applications may run different versions of the model. For a fuller picture of OpenAI's current models, see OpenAI GPT models.
What ChatGPT is
ChatGPT is an application product from OpenAI. It provides a conversational interface on top of OpenAI's models — today primarily the GPT-4o family, o-series reasoning models and others depending on the plan. The interface handles the conversation context, memory, file uploads, search integration and, for paid plans, access to more capable models.
ChatGPT is not the same as the GPT API. The API gives developers direct model access to build their own applications. ChatGPT is OpenAI's consumer and business product built on that infrastructure. The experience in ChatGPT — including any memory, instructions and project context — is specific to the ChatGPT product and does not automatically transfer to other apps that use the same underlying model.
GPT vs. ChatGPT: key differences
| Aspect | GPT models | ChatGPT application |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A family of language models developed by OpenAI. | An application product built on those models. |
| How you access it | Through the OpenAI API, developer tools or products built on it. | Through chat.openai.com, the mobile app or the ChatGPT API. |
| What stays when you switch | Nothing: the model itself does not hold your conversation history. | Conversation history and memory features stay in ChatGPT; they do not follow you to another app or model. |
| Who it is for | Developers building applications, tools or integrations on OpenAI models. | Anyone using OpenAI as an assistant for writing, research, coding or everyday questions. |
| Custom configurations | You control the system prompt and parameters through the API. | ChatGPT offered Custom GPTs for configured versions; these retire December 11, 2026. Projects remain. |
Custom GPTs and what is changing
Custom GPTs were configured versions of ChatGPT that users and developers could create with specific instructions, a knowledge base and selected tools. They gave the ChatGPT interface a way to stay in a specific persona or answer from a defined set of documents without re-explaining the setup each session.
OpenAI announced that Custom GPTs retire on December 11, 2026. ChatGPT Projects remain available and serve a similar role for users who want to keep instructions and files attached to a set of conversations. Verify the current state on OpenAI's own help pages, since this timeline may have shifted. For a broader look at how ChatGPT Projects and the old Custom GPTs compare, see ChatGPT Projects vs Custom GPTs.
What lives in the model and what lives outside it
A common source of frustration is learning that context stored in ChatGPT does not carry over to Claude, Cursor or any other app, even if those apps use the same underlying GPT model. ChatGPT's memory, projects and conversation history are ChatGPT features, not GPT model features. The model itself is stateless between sessions.
The practical implication is that anything you want to keep portable needs to live outside all of these applications. A project record that holds the goal, the decisions, the current tasks and where things stand can be read by any connected assistant, regardless of which app or model version it is running. Claude vs ChatGPT covers more on moving work between different models.
Keep the work when GPT changes or you switch apps
OpenAI updates its models regularly. When GPT-4o becomes GPT-4.1, or when you move from ChatGPT to Claude or Cursor, the project record in fenbs stays the same. Connected assistants read it from wherever you left off. fenbs does not import ChatGPT history automatically; you add the relevant context by hand or ask a connected assistant to record it.

Choosing between GPT access routes
If you are using OpenAI as a personal assistant, ChatGPT is the right starting point. It gives you the most polished interface, memory features and the ability to manage multiple conversations in Projects. If you are building a product or integrating OpenAI models into a workflow or tool, the API gives you more control over what the model receives and what it returns.
If you use coding tools, Copilot vs ChatGPT explains how GitHub Copilot, which uses OpenAI models for code, differs from ChatGPT the assistant. The gemini vs ChatGPT guide covers what to consider if you are deciding between OpenAI and Google tools.
How to do this with fenbs
- Create a free account. fenbs is free for one person; no credit card is needed.
- Add a project for the work you are doing with OpenAI models. Record the goal, the constraints and what an assistant needs to know before starting.
- Record model-selection decisions in Decisions and rules: why you chose GPT-4o over another option, what you tested, and what criteria apply for future choices.
- Connect ChatGPT or another supported assistant from Integrations. ChatGPT connects in developer mode; check OpenAI's current help page for which plans support that.
- Ask the connected assistant to read project context before working. Before it stops, ask it to save progress and any changed decisions.
fenbs does not import your ChatGPT chat history or memory automatically. It keeps the context you explicitly record, so it is accurate and current rather than a copy of every conversation you have ever had.
