ChatGPT Temporary Chat: What Carries Over and What to Save
Understand temporary conversations, choose personalization deliberately, and keep useful work without assuming the chat will be waiting in your history.

ChatGPT Temporary Chat keeps a conversation out of your history unless you choose to save it. Before starting, you can choose whether it uses personalization; while temporary, the chat does not create or update memories and is not used to improve OpenAI models. Temporary describes how the conversation is handled, not a promise that no data is retained.
If the conversation produces useful work, tools like fenbs give selected decisions and next steps a deliberate home. You record what matters; fenbs does not read the temporary conversation or import it automatically.
When is a temporary conversation useful?
Use it for a conversation you do not want added to ordinary history unless you later decide to keep it. A one-time brainstorming exercise, a practice conversation, or a question unrelated to your ongoing projects can fit. Choose the mode before entering information, rather than trying to undo your intention after a long exchange.
Say you are testing several imaginary names for a presentation exercise. You want suggestions now, but do not expect to return to the exchange. A temporary conversation can suit that purpose. If the exercise develops into real project work, pause and choose where the useful outcome should live.
It is less convenient when you already know you will need to revisit the full discussion. Start with a regular saved chat for that workflow, or intentionally save the temporary one. The important choice is whether you need the original exchange, a selected result, or neither.
How do you start with the right personalization choice?
- Open a new conversation and select Temporary.
- Choose Personalized or Unpersonalized before sending the first message.
- Read the mode shown in the interface and confirm it matches your intention.
- Begin the conversation, keeping any project material within the rules that apply to your account and workplace.
OpenAI’s Temporary Chat instructions (opens in a new tab) explain the difference: Personalized can use existing memories, custom instructions, and plugins; Unpersonalized does not. The choice cannot change after the conversation begins. Account and workspace restrictions take priority.
Check this instead of assuming temporary means a completely fresh personal context. For a neutral drafting exercise, consider whether your usual preferences are helpful or distracting. If you want the response based only on material you provide in the session, make that intention explicit and choose the corresponding personalization option.
What happens if you decide to keep the conversation?
You can save a temporary conversation as a regular chat. It then appears in history and follows your account’s personalization and model-improvement settings. If you leave it unsaved, you cannot reopen it from history after leaving. Decide while the conversation is available, rather than relying on recovering it later.
| What you need later | Practical choice | What to review |
|---|---|---|
| The full back-and-forth | Save the conversation as a regular chat | Your account settings now apply to the saved chat. |
| One approved work outcome | Record a selected summary in the project | Separate the person’s decision from the assistant’s suggestions. |
| Nothing from this exchange | Leave it temporary | Do not expect to return through history. |
These choices solve different needs. A transcript preserves the discussion in its original order. A project update states the current outcome and what should happen next. You may want both, but copying the full exchange into another tool rarely makes the next action clearer by itself.
For returning to saved conversations, see managing ChatGPT history. If your aim is simply to remove a saved conversation from the sidebar, archiving ChatGPT chats covers that separate action. Exporting ChatGPT chats explains separate copies of eligible account data.
Does temporary mean private in every possible sense?
No. OpenAI’s retention guidance (opens in a new tab) describes safety retention for temporary chats. Its Temporary Chat documentation also explains limited safety uses of prior context and third-party handling when data is sent through actions. A temporary label does not replace a review of where sensitive material is allowed to go.
Think separately about visibility in history, personalization, training preferences, retention, and any external service you use. These are different questions. Before using confidential work material, follow your organization’s approved account and handling rules rather than assuming that one conversation setting answers all of them.
OpenAI’s Data controls guide (opens in a new tab) explains the account settings. For broader workplace considerations, read ChatGPT for business. You can keep this decision simple: understand the mode, use permitted information, and choose deliberately before saving or sharing a result.
What work should you record before leaving?
Preserve the part that changes future action. If the conversation was exploratory, that may be a question to investigate rather than a decision. If you chose an approach, record who chose it, what was chosen, and why. If you only generated alternatives, keep them labeled as alternatives.
- Outcome: the useful result, in a few sentences that another person can understand.
- Decision: the person’s actual choice and its reason, if a choice was made.
- Evidence: the original source or file location behind an important conclusion.
- Next step: the smallest action that continues the work, including any untested assumption.
For example, a founder might use a temporary conversation to explore a signup flow. A useful update would say that the founder selected the shorter form, customer email remains required, and a phone usability check is still outstanding. It should not say the flow is approved for release merely because the assistant produced a plausible draft.
Review any AI-written recap yourself. Remove personal details the next session does not need, correct confident guesses, and distinguish completed work from planned work. The benefit comes from making a trustworthy record, not from preserving every sentence.
fenbs makes this a project handoff, with selected context and the next step available to supported connected assistants. For personal recall settings themselves, use the separate Reference chat history guide. Organizing ChatGPT chats covers a system for your saved conversations.
Keep the outcome you chose to carry forward
Add a selected work summary to fenbs, record a person’s choices in Decisions and rules, and save the remaining tasks in Where we left off. Your next supported connected assistant can read that project context. You decide what leaves the temporary conversation.

How to do this with fenbs
- Create a free account and add the project that needs continuity.
- While the useful conversation is available, review and manually record only the project facts you want to keep.
- Add the next tasks and any decision a person made. Write Where we left off with the next step and outstanding checks.
- Ask a supported connected assistant to read that project context when work resumes, then save progress again before stopping.
fenbs is free for one person, no credit card. It is not the right fit for recovering a temporary conversation you already left unsaved, and it does not provide access to that chat. Start when there is a concrete outcome you want the next session to use.
How should you choose the mode next time?
Before starting, ask whether you expect to return to the exchange and whether personal context should influence it. Before leaving, ask whether anything useful needs a continuing home. Those two small checks reduce the chance that an ordinary practice chat becomes an accidental work archive.
