ChatGPT Study Mode in a Project: What Works Instead
Study Mode is not available inside ChatGPT Projects. Use a regular study conversation with selected course materials, or ask an ordinary project chat to guide you through questions.

ChatGPT Study Mode is not available inside Projects, according to OpenAI’s documentation. To use the actual Study option, start a regular conversation and provide the particular course materials and learning instructions you need there.
You can also ask an ordinary project conversation to guide you with questions, but that does not turn on Study Mode. Tools like fenbs can keep the learning goal, unfinished tasks, and progress outside either conversation, so moving between them does not mean reconstructing what you were studying.
How do you start with the right materials?
- Choose one learning objective from your course or project. Identify the exact reading, worksheet, or notes that explain it.
- Open a regular ChatGPT conversation outside the Project. Turn on Study using the controls described in OpenAI’s device-specific instructions.
- Upload the selected material if uploads are available, or paste the relevant excerpt. Include its title and the page or section to use.
- Restate the instructions that matter: your level, what you already understand, and how you want the session to proceed.
- Ask ChatGPT to identify the supplied source and summarize the intended topic before you begin. Correct any missing or mismatched material first.
The official Study Mode guide (opens in a new tab) confirms that the feature needs a regular conversation and can reference uploaded study materials when uploads are available. Do not assume files in a separate Project have automatically become sources for this chat.
Why does a Project not provide the Study option?
Projects organize related chats, files, and instructions, but not every ChatGPT feature applies inside them. OpenAI explicitly lists Study Mode as unavailable in project conversations in its Projects documentation (opens in a new tab). A missing Study option there does not, by itself, indicate a broken account.
First check the conversation’s location. A regular conversation and a conversation within a named Project are different places to begin. Use the supported location before spending time changing files, rewriting instructions, or trying to repair a feature that is not supported there.
Keep useful course organization in the Project if that works for you. Our ChatGPT Projects best practices cover managing that workspace. For the teaching sequence after setup, see the separate Study Mode workflow.
Can you ask a project conversation to tutor you?
Yes. You can request a guided conversation using ordinary instructions, such as asking one question at a time and waiting before explaining the answer. Treat this as a requested response style, rather than a workaround that gives the Project the actual Study feature.
This option can be convenient when your selected readings already live in the Project. Ask which sources the answer will use and check that they match the assignment. A familiar filename in the sidebar is less useful than a correct explanation tied to the page you intended.
Goal: understand how to read a cash flow statement. Source: the uploaded class handout, section 3 only. Level: first-year business student. Ask one question at a time and wait for my attempt. Use hints before giving a worked answer. Identify any explanation that goes beyond the handout. At the end, separate what I answered alone from what required help.
Project instructions apply within that Project and override global custom instructions. Review them for conflicts, especially if the same Project was previously used to produce finished answers. A direction to “always give a complete solution immediately” works against a request for guided practice.
Which instructions must you repeat outside the Project?
Repeat the instructions whose absence would change the session: the source scope, learning objective, current level, feedback style, and any assignment rules. Do not rely on a new conversation to reconstruct them from the name of a Project or a vague request to continue studying.
- Source boundary: use the uploaded chapter before adding outside explanations.
- Learning goal: distinguish operating, investing, and financing activities.
- Starting point: I understand profit but confuse it with cash movement.
- Response pattern: ask for my reasoning, then give one hint if needed.
- Progress standard: mark a topic understood only after an independent answer.
Use a short, reviewed summary instead of pasting an entire old chat. Remove abandoned goals and incorrect explanations. Keeping the current learning instructions and next task in the fenbs project context gives you a stable starting point you can intentionally carry across conversation boundaries.
How do you verify that the intended source is being used?
Ask a question whose answer depends on a distinctive detail in the material. For example, ask which labels the instructor uses for the three cash flow categories and where the handout introduces them. Compare the answer with the document rather than accepting a confident statement that the file was read.
If the answer is generic, name the section again or paste a short relevant passage. For unclear scans, provide a clearer image or the text. Ask the assistant to say when it cannot identify a requested detail instead of filling the gap with a plausible example.
Use the same check when you return to an existing session. A new version of a handout may change the examples or assignment scope. Label the current document clearly and ask for confirmation of which version supports the explanation before you continue.
The distinction between sources and conversation organization also appears in Copilot Notebooks versus ChatGPT Projects. Choosing a container does not remove the need to check what information an answer actually used.
Keep the learning state when the chat changes
Save the learning goal, source references, unresolved questions, and next practice task in fenbs. Copy the relevant summary into a regular Study conversation or an ordinary Project chat. Afterward, update what you could answer independently so the next session begins at the right level.

How to do this with fenbs
- Create a free account and add a project for the course or learning goal. One person can start free, with no credit card.
- Add a task for the current topic. Write the source title, relevant section, and what you should be able to do after studying.
- Save agreed study instructions in Decisions and rules, and add a context note describing the current misunderstanding. Keep full course documents in their appropriate document location.
- Review the record and paste the selected context into the conversation you chose. This manual step does not require a fenbs connection inside Study Mode.
- Update the task after studying. Save evidence of independent answers and the next exercise in Where we left off; record a useful lesson when a recurring mistake becomes clear.
fenbs does not provide tutoring, import ChatGPT chats, or transfer Project files into Study Mode. A single course document may be enough if you have no ongoing work to track. fenbs fits when study progress needs to survive changes of conversation or assistant.
What should you keep before the next study session?
Keep the source, a specific result, the remaining gap, and the next action. For example: “Used handout section 3; classified routine operating payments alone; still confused by equipment sales; next time compare two investing examples.” That is more actionable than saying the chapter was reviewed.
If you also use another assistant, Claude Projects versus ChatGPT Projects covers their workspace differences. The same concise learning record can guide your next session without pretending the two products share memory. Find related explanations in the AI memory collection.
