ChatGPT Memory API: App Memory Versus API State

ChatGPT memory and API conversation state serve different jobs. Understand what your application must supply, store, review, and keep separate.

If you are looking for a ChatGPT memory API, separate ChatGPT’s personalization features from the conversation state your application sends through the OpenAI API. Build continuity using documented API state features and your own reviewed records; do not assume an API request inherits what a ChatGPT conversation remembers.

For project work across supported AI apps, fenbs holds selected decisions, notes, and progress outside any one conversation. That solves a work-record problem; it does not expose a user’s private ChatGPT memory to your application.

Which information are you trying to reuse?

Separate the record from the current conversation
InformationPurposeWhat to decide
ChatGPT personalizationRelevant remembered information in the ChatGPT productWhich product controls the user wants enabled
API conversation stateMessages and other conversation items used across application turnsWhich documented state mechanism suits the conversation
Application recordsApproved facts, preferences, and work information your product maintainsWho can read, correct, and remove each record
A project checkpointCurrent goal, approved decisions, unfinished work, and next stepWho reviews it before another assistant continues

Start with the job, not the word memory. A customer-support application may need the last exchange in a case. A design team may need an approved revision rule from another session. Those requirements have different owners, update rules, and access boundaries, even if both are described as remembering.

The overview of how ChatGPT memory works covers product personalization. Here the question is how to carry the right information into an API-backed application without treating every stored conversation as an approved source of truth.

How does an API conversation continue between requests?

OpenAI documents three approaches: pass relevant messages yourself, chain Responses with a previous response identifier, or use a Conversations object with the Responses API. The conversation-state guide (opens in a new tab) explains those mechanisms. They preserve conversational continuity; your application still needs to associate the right conversation with the right user.

Choose the simplest approach that fits your product. A short, self-contained task may need only the current request and its source material. A continuing exchange may benefit from conversation state. A reusable company rule belongs in a separately maintained record so it can be reviewed and changed without reconstructing an old discussion.

Suppose a fictional design-review app helps draft comments on a drawing. Its conversation can retain the question about a particular doorway. Its project record should identify the approved drawing revision. Keeping those responsibilities separate makes it easier to correct the revision without pretending the entire conversation was a settled instruction.

Where should reusable instructions live?

Define the application’s instructions deliberately. Do not expect a developer’s personal ChatGPT preferences to become the product’s behavior. OpenAI’s custom-instructions documentation (opens in a new tab) distinguishes that ChatGPT feature from instructions supplied through the API.

Separate general behavior from project facts. “Ask before treating a proposed change as approved” describes behavior. “The client approved revision C” describes a project event. Give the event a source and reviewer, then provide it when relevant. An application instruction should not become a hiding place for facts that someone must keep current.

Document these choices alongside the integration. Our API documentation guide covers making inputs, errors, and examples understandable to the next developer. Include an explanation of which information reaches a request and how a user corrects an outdated record.

What should your application store as a durable fact?

Store information because it supports a defined future action. A useful fact has a subject, scope, source, and current status. “Use the blue design” is ambiguous. “For the lobby proposal, the project lead approved drawing C; the lighting detail remains open” tells the next reader what is settled and what needs a person.

  • Identify the person or project the record belongs to before retrieving it.
  • Keep proposals separate from approved decisions.
  • Record where an important statement came from and when it was reviewed.
  • Give the owner a clear way to correct or remove the stored information.
  • Select only the facts relevant to the next request instead of attaching the whole archive.

For shared work, fenbs records decisions and project context that connected assistants can consult. People make the decisions; assistants can record what those people chose. This keeps approval visible instead of letting a persuasive generated summary quietly become the team’s policy.

How fenbs helps

Keep approved context available to the next assistant

Add a project in fenbs and record its current goal, decisions, and next task. A connected assistant can read the same project context before continuing in another supported AI app. fenbs does not import ChatGPT memories or provide an API-state store for your custom product.

Which boundaries need checking before you ship?

Test the boundary between two users, two projects, and two versions of a decision. Ask whether a request could receive context that belongs elsewhere. A plausible answer is not enough: inspect which record was selected and why. Include a case where no relevant record exists, so the application can ask for clarification.

Review retention separately from continuity. OpenAI’s API data-controls documentation (opens in a new tab) distinguishes logs from application state and describes controls by feature. Read the requirements for the endpoints you choose rather than treating “memory off” in ChatGPT as a policy for your application.

When a user corrects a fact, test the next request with that correction. Also check whether an earlier conversation still contains the obsolete wording. Your design should make the current approved source clear; merely saving a new sentence does not explain how competing versions will be handled.

How to do this with fenbs

  1. Create a free account, free for one person with no credit card, and add the project you want assistants to share.
  2. Write a short AI context note for the goal and active source material. Record human-approved choices in Decisions and rules.
  3. Connect a supported AI app through Integrations. MCP is a standard way for an AI app to use an outside tool; the connection uses browser sign-in.
  4. Ask the assistant to read the project context before starting, then save task progress and Where we left off before ending the session.

fenbs is a fit when the work must continue across connected assistants with a reviewed shared record. If you are building memory into your own customer-facing product, you still need application storage, access controls, and an API integration designed for that product. Do not treat a team work record as a substitute for those responsibilities.

Our Claude API introduction covers a different provider’s interface, while the AI memory collection covers broader continuity questions. Across providers, keep the same distinction: what happened in a conversation and what a person approved are different kinds of information.

Questions people ask.

Does an API key provide access to my ChatGPT saved memories?

Do not assume it does. Use documented API interfaces for conversation state and deliberately supply approved application context, rather than depending on a personal ChatGPT memory list.

Is saving every message enough for a project record?

A transcript preserves discussion but can mix guesses, proposals, and approvals. Maintain current decisions and progress separately so the next session can identify what is actually settled.

Can fenbs replace the database for an AI product?

fenbs keeps project work for people and connected assistants. A custom AI product still needs storage and access controls appropriate to its users, data, and documented API design.

Should I test an empty context as well as a populated one?

Yes. Check that the application recognizes missing information and asks for it instead of inventing a previous agreement or silently using another project’s facts.
