ChatGPT Canvas Won't Open: Check Availability and Loading Errors
Canvas failing to open is usually a model availability issue, a browser loading error, or an extension blocking the interface. These checks cover each cause and how to continue working while Canvas is out.

ChatGPT Canvas not opening usually comes down to one of three causes: the model selected in the conversation does not support Canvas, the browser is blocking part of the interface from loading, or there is a temporary service issue on OpenAI's side. Tools like fenbs let you keep the work brief and next steps in a place that is not tied to Canvas, so a different AI app can continue while the editor is unavailable.
Start with the quickest check first: open a new conversation in an incognito window. If Canvas works there, the issue is in your current browser session.
Check whether Canvas is supported by the current model
Canvas is only available when a supported ChatGPT model is active in the conversation. If you see a model selector at the top of the chat, switch to the model that supports Canvas and start a new conversation. The model you were using may not have Canvas enabled, even if your plan includes it.
If there is no model selector and Canvas has never appeared for you, check your account plan. Canvas is a plan-level feature, not available on every tier. Your ChatGPT account settings show your current plan and the features it includes.
Try a new conversation
Some conversations are initialized in a state that does not support Canvas, especially older ones started before Canvas was enabled or those that began with a different model. Start a new conversation and ask ChatGPT explicitly: "Open a Canvas document." The Canvas icon in the input toolbar also triggers it directly when available.
If Canvas opens in a new conversation but not in the old one, the issue is session-specific. You can continue your work in the new conversation by pasting the relevant content from the old one.
Disable extensions and clear the browser cache
Browser extensions that block scripts, rewrite styles, or intercept network requests can prevent Canvas from rendering. Open ChatGPT in an incognito window with all extensions disabled. If Canvas appears there, work through your extensions one at a time in your normal session to find the one causing the problem. Ad blockers, script managers, and dark mode extensions are the most common culprits.
If Canvas still does not open in incognito, clear your browser cache for chat.openai.com. A corrupted or outdated cache file can cause the page to load an older version of the interface that predates Canvas.
Check the OpenAI status page
Canvas loading failures sometimes coincide with platform-wide incidents. Check status.openai.com to see whether there is an active issue with ChatGPT or the Canvas feature. If an incident is listed, the fix is on OpenAI's side and waiting is the only option.
If no incident is listed and the above checks have not resolved the issue, try a different browser or device. Occasionally a browser version or operating system configuration is incompatible with the current version of the interface.
Try a different browser or device
If Canvas still does not open after clearing cache and disabling extensions, test in a different browser. Chrome, Firefox, and Edge each render the ChatGPT interface slightly differently, and a configuration issue in one sometimes does not appear in another. If Canvas opens in a second browser, continue work there while you investigate what is different in the first.
If you have another device available — a different laptop, or switching from a desktop to a tablet — testing there confirms whether the problem is account-level or device-level. An account-level restriction, such as a plan that does not include Canvas, produces the same result on every device. A device-level problem, such as a conflicting extension or a corrupted cache file, disappears when you switch.
Continue working while Canvas is unavailable
If Canvas remains unavailable and you have a document to finish, open the relevant content in a word processor, a plain text editor, or a different AI tool. The document itself does not require Canvas; Canvas is one interface for editing it. Paste the content, continue editing, and return to Canvas when it is available.

Keep the work brief so any assistant can continue
fenbs stores the document brief, the current draft state, and the next step in one place any connected AI app can read. If Canvas is down, you can connect Claude, Cursor, or another supported tool to the same project and continue without rewriting the background. Create a free account and save your document brief before starting any significant Canvas session.

How to continue Canvas work with fenbs when the editor is unavailable
- Create a free account and add the document or task as a project in fenbs.
- Save the document brief — audience, goal, tone, current state — as a context note so it is available outside ChatGPT.
- Record the next step in Where we left off before each session ends, so picking up in another tool is straightforward.
- Connect another supported AI app to fenbs from Integrations when Canvas is not available.
- Ask that app to read the project context, then continue the document in whatever editor it supports.
