ChatGPT Canvas Not Working: Checks and Recovery
Canvas problems usually fall into three categories: edits not applying, the panel not loading, and sessions freezing. Each one has a specific fix, and your work can be recovered in most cases.

When ChatGPT Canvas stops working, the problem is usually one of three things: the AI is making edits that do not match your instruction, the panel is not loading at all, or the session has frozen mid-edit. Each has a specific fix. Tools like fenbs let you save the last accepted state of a document before a session goes wrong, so the work is not lost even when Canvas becomes unusable.
Check the most likely cause first based on what you are seeing. If the panel is blank or loading endlessly, start at the loading section. If Canvas opens but edits are wrong, start at the edits section.
Canvas edits are not applying correctly
When an edit instruction produces the wrong result or changes the wrong part of the document, the most common cause is an instruction that is too broad. "Improve this section" leaves too much open to interpretation. "Rewrite the second paragraph to be more direct and remove the parenthetical in the third sentence" gives the AI a clear, checkable task.
You can also select a specific part of the Canvas document and send the instruction with that selection active. This limits the scope of changes to the selected text and makes it easier to verify the result.
If edits keep missing the mark on a long document, the context window may be under pressure. Start a fresh conversation, paste in the relevant section, and work on that piece separately.
When a particular type of edit keeps going wrong — for example, the AI restructures headings when you asked it to shorten a paragraph — specify what not to change alongside the instruction. "Shorten the second paragraph to two sentences; do not change the heading or the list below it" limits the scope and reduces unwanted changes elsewhere in the document.
The Canvas panel is not loading
A blank or endlessly loading Canvas panel is almost always a browser or network issue. Try these steps in order: reload the page, clear your browser cache for chat.openai.com, then open ChatGPT in an incognito window with extensions disabled.
If Canvas loads in incognito but not in your normal session, a browser extension is interfering. Disable them one at a time to find the cause. Ad blockers, script blockers, and privacy extensions are the most common culprits.
Also check that you are on a plan that includes Canvas. If the model selector is missing and Canvas has never appeared for you, a plan restriction is likely. See ChatGPT Canvas removed for a full list of plan and availability checks.
The session has frozen mid-edit
If the Canvas panel stops responding while an edit is in progress, do not close the browser tab immediately. Wait thirty seconds to see whether the request completes. If nothing changes after that, copy the current document text from the Canvas panel before doing anything else.
Once you have a copy, reload the page. The conversation history should still be there, and you may be able to return to the document. If the edit that caused the freeze corrupted the document, use the conversation history to identify the last good version and restore it from there.
Edits are producing garbled or repetitive output
Repetitive phrases, broken sentences, or nonsensical edits can signal that the model is struggling with the current context. This can happen when the conversation is very long or when the document has been edited many times in the same session. Start a fresh conversation, paste the current version of the document, and continue from there.
If garbled output keeps recurring, try switching to a different model in the conversation settings. Different model versions handle long contexts differently.
Check whether ChatGPT is having broader issues
Some Canvas failures are caused by platform-wide problems rather than anything specific to your session. Check OpenAI's status page (status.openai.com) to see whether Canvas or the underlying API is reporting an incident. If there is an active issue, waiting it out is the only option.
Parallel tools also experience outages. See Claude Code not working and Copilot instructions not working for comparison troubleshooting patterns across AI tools.
Keep the last good state safe with fenbs
Before a long Canvas session, save the current document brief and the last accepted version of the document to a task in fenbs. If the session fails, that saved state lets you continue in any other tool or in a fresh Canvas session without rebuilding from memory. Every change is recorded with who made it, so you can see exactly where things stood when the session stopped.

How to keep working even when Canvas fails with fenbs
- Create a free account and add the document as a task within a project.
- Before any significant editing session, paste the current document version into the task as a context note so it is retrievable.
- Save the document brief and accepted style decisions as Decisions and rules so the next session has them.
- When a session freezes, copy whatever text is visible in Canvas and update the task with the most recent state before reloading.
- Connect your next AI session to fenbs from Integrations so it reads the saved state and continues from the correct point.
