AI for Dissertations: Keep Research Traceable
Use permitted AI assistance to plan chapters, inspect arguments, and organize revisions while keeping sources and your own contribution clear.

Use AI for dissertation work only within your program’s rules, with a workflow that keeps your research question, source evidence, and intellectual contribution visible. An assistant can help organize chapter plans and revision questions, but you remain responsible for the argument, methods, findings, and every citation.
A dissertation spans many sessions, drafts, and conversations. fenbs can keep the research decisions, source links, lessons, and next steps outside any one AI chat. Keep the manuscript, research data, and reference library in the systems your university approves; the shared work record should point to them without duplicating sensitive material.
What should you do before using an assistant?
- Read your graduate school, department, adviser, research ethics, and data-handling requirements. Ask for clarification when a proposed use is not addressed.
- Write down which activities are permitted, what disclosure is required, and which tools or information are restricted.
- Choose one bounded activity, such as checking the logic of a chapter outline against material you already understand.
- Decide how you will verify the output and record the assistance before using it in academic work.
Policies vary. For example, Harvard Medical School’s dissertation guidance (opens in a new tab) describes written authorization requirements and emphasizes student responsibility for accuracy and independent contribution. That is an example of a specific institution’s policy, not permission for students elsewhere. Follow your own program’s current requirements.
Permission to correct grammar does not necessarily permit generating an analysis or translating confidential interview transcripts. Explain the exact activity when asking your adviser. The general AI at work workflow is useful for task boundaries, but academic authorization needs its own explicit check.
How do you turn a research question into chapter tasks?
Begin with your research question, the contribution you intend to make, and the evidence available to support it. Write these yourself before asking for an outline critique. Otherwise the assistant may produce a polished structure that could fit many dissertations but does not explain the purpose of yours.
For each proposed chapter, specify the question it answers, the evidence it uses, the claim it supports, and what must be established before the next chapter. Ask the assistant to identify missing connections and overlapping sections. A useful response raises questions you can evaluate; it should not silently invent your findings.
| Field | What to write | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Chapter purpose | The specific question this chapter answers. | Check alignment with the dissertation question. |
| Evidence | The approved sources or data supporting the proposed claims. | Read originals and identify gaps. |
| Dependency | An unresolved method or interpretation needed before drafting. | Ask the adviser or complete the research task. |
| Completion check | What must be verified before the chapter is ready for feedback. | Review claims, references, and argument structure. |
Turn missing evidence and unresolved questions into concrete tasks rather than hiding them inside an ambitious outline. Keep the reasons for major scope decisions in fenbs project context. That lets a later assistant understand why you excluded a tempting topic instead of proposing it again.
How do you prevent fabricated or misleading references?
Treat an AI-suggested reference as an unverified lead until you find the original through your library, publisher, archive, or an appropriate research database. Check the title, authors, publication details, and actual content. A real paper can still be cited for a claim it never makes.
Keep a source record with the stable link or identifier, the exact passage or page supporting your note, and your own explanation of its relevance. Distinguish a direct quotation from your paraphrase and from an assistant’s suggestion. Enter the verified reference into your reference manager, not just the conversation.
Use only the supplied source excerpt. Identify which of my claims it supports, which it does not establish, and any important qualification. Point to the relevant passage. Do not add references or facts from memory. If the excerpt is insufficient, state what I need to read next.
Read enough of the original to understand the method and limits. A passage-level check is useful for locating evidence, but a short excerpt may omit the population, definitions, or limitations that control the conclusion. Record your checked interpretation before building a larger argument on it.
What can AI help with during revision?
Where allowed, ask for a diagnostic review of your writing: identify an undefined term, a paragraph whose claim lacks evidence, or a transition that does not follow. Require examples from your text. Decide yourself whether the suggestion improves the argument and whether rewriting assistance is permitted.
Keep adviser comments separate from assistant suggestions. An assistant’s interpretation of a comment is not a new instruction from your committee. If a comment could change the research design or central claim, ask the person who made it rather than letting the assistant settle the ambiguity.
Use a revision record with the comment, your proposed response, the sections affected, and the check still needed. Broader AI writing tools address general drafting; dissertation revision must preserve the specific scholarly contribution you can explain and defend.
Keep the path back to your evidence
Use Links and listings for permitted research resource links and tasks for the checks those sources still need. Record research decisions and useful lessons with the project. Save the current chapter, outstanding evidence questions, and next action so the next assistant session can continue from checked progress.

What should you record about AI assistance?
Keep a contemporaneous record of the tool, task, date, material supplied, output used, and verification you performed. Follow your program’s required disclosure format rather than assuming a private log is enough. Avoid recording restricted participant information in that log or any outside work tool.
Publication can introduce additional rules. Harvard’s research guidance (opens in a new tab) advises checking the target publisher’s policies on permitted AI use and disclosure. If you intend to publish a dissertation chapter, check those requirements while planning the work instead of reconstructing your process at submission.
Record what you learned from mistakes too. If a summary removed an important limitation, write a practical lesson: read the limitations section before using a summary to frame the finding. A useful AI brain holds that checked lesson, not the unsupported conclusion that caused the problem.
How to do this with fenbs
- Create a free account and add a dissertation project with the research question and the next chapter milestone.
- Record the AI-use boundaries your program or adviser approved in Decisions and rules. Add tasks for source verification, chapter revisions, and questions waiting on a person.
- Save permitted resource links in Links and listings and practical mistakes in Lessons learned. Keep restricted data, manuscripts, and reference files in approved research systems.
- Connect a supported assistant through Integrations. Ask it to read context before helping and save where the research stands, what was checked, and where to begin next.
fenbs is not a reference manager, research data repository, or dissertation editor. It does not verify citations or grant permission to use AI in academic work. If you only need to format a bibliography, your reference manager is the better starting point.
Start by saving one chapter’s outstanding evidence question and next action. At the next session, check whether you can resume without rereading a long conversation. The AI at work hub has more workflows, but the measure here is simple: your research should become easier to trace and explain.
