AI Lawyer Document Review: Check Issues Against the Source
Use AI to organize a legal document review around a defined checklist, verifiable passages, and a lawyer’s final judgment.

AI lawyer document review works best as a structured first pass: give the tool a defined issue checklist, require references to the supplied text, and have a lawyer verify the findings. AI can help locate passages and organize questions. It does not establish that an agreement is acceptable, a privilege claim is sound, or a review is complete.
Under a firm-approved data policy, fenbs can preserve approved review instructions and follow-up work between assistants. Keep client documents and sensitive analysis in the systems authorized for them. Even a task title or source reference may reveal information about a representation, so decide what may be recorded before creating the project.
How do you run a source-based review step by step?
- Define the review: document set, versions, client position, jurisdiction, purpose, and the questions the responsible lawyer wants answered.
- Confirm that the specific AI service, account settings, and proposed data are approved for the matter. Resolve client-consent and communication requirements before processing where applicable.
- Supply an issue checklist and require each response to identify the document, version, section, exact supporting passage, and any uncertainty.
- Verify every proposed issue against the original document and relevant surrounding provisions. Independently check any legal authority used in the analysis.
- Have the responsible lawyer decide the disposition. Preserve the reviewed findings, outstanding questions, and next actions through the firm’s approved recordkeeping process.
Start with a bounded test, such as one agreement and a handful of issues. Compare the assistant’s results with a lawyer’s review before expanding the scope. A neatly formatted issue list measures the presentation of an answer; it does not establish the quality of the underlying review.
What must be settled before uploading client material?
The ABA’s Formal Opinion 512 (opens in a new tab) addresses duties implicated by generative AI, including competence, confidentiality, communication, supervision, and review of output. It calls for understanding the tool’s capabilities and limitations. Apply the rules and guidance governing your jurisdiction and matter rather than treating the opinion as blanket permission.
ABA Model Rule 1.6 (opens in a new tab) concerns information relating to representation and reasonable efforts to prevent unauthorized disclosure or access. Assess the proposed use with the firm’s responsible personnel, including the service’s data handling, retention, access, and relevant contract terms. Removing a client’s name alone does not establish that a document is suitable to upload.
Write down the approved data boundary in operational terms. For example, a practice exercise might allow a public sample agreement while excluding real negotiation emails. Tell the reviewer where questions should go if the material falls outside that boundary. Recheck approval when the service, account configuration, or proposed use changes.
The assistant access review guide gives a broader framework for inspecting connected tools. In fenbs, record only the approved operating instructions and permitted work details through Decisions and rules.
What makes an issue checklist useful?
A checklist should describe the client’s question and the reviewer’s expected evidence. Avoid asking whether the document is legally safe. That broad request invites an unsupported overall conclusion. Instead, tell the assistant which provisions to locate, which comparison standard to use, and which issues remain for counsel.
| Issue | Requested evidence | Human review |
|---|---|---|
| Termination | Relevant provisions, notice conditions, and cross-references | Compare the complete mechanism with the client’s instructions |
| Liability allocation | Operative language, definitions, exceptions, and related clauses | Assess the combined effect and appropriate negotiation response |
| Delivery obligations | Who must do what, by when, and subject to which conditions | Confirm the business facts and resolve inconsistent documents |
| Missing information | Unfilled fields, absent referenced schedules, and uncertain text | Obtain the missing material before reaching a conclusion |
Label that checklist as illustrative and adapt it to the transaction. It is not a complete contract review standard. Give the assistant the approved comparison document or instructions where permitted, and ask it to distinguish a departure from that standard from a legal conclusion about enforceability.
How do you verify a finding against the document?
Open the cited version and locate the passage yourself. Confirm that the quotation exists and that its wording supports the proposed issue. Read the full provision, its definitions, relevant exceptions, schedules, and cross-references. A real sentence can still support a misleading summary when the surrounding text changes its effect.
Use a finding status that reflects what happened: proposed, source verified, lawyer reviewed, or awaiting information. Do not let a source check quietly become approval of the assistant’s legal interpretation. A reviewer may confirm that a clause exists while rejecting the assistant’s description of its effect.
Treat absence claims with particular care. If the assistant says no notice period appears, check the relevant provisions directly and establish which documents it searched. An unreadable schedule or an alternative term can defeat that conclusion. Preserve the search limits instead of presenting a missing result as proof that no provision exists.
Use a stable document identifier and a usable locator in the review record. A page number may change after redlining, so include the version and section heading. For scanned material, compare critical quotations against the page image rather than relying exclusively on recognized text.
Keep approved review instructions visible
Where your firm permits it, record the responsible person’s review instructions in Decisions and rules. Add permitted follow-up tasks for unresolved questions and source checks, so the next connected assistant reads the same boundaries before continuing.

What should happen to disagreements and open questions?
Separate correction, judgment, and missing information. A false quotation is an output error. A disagreement about a negotiation position needs a lawyer’s assessment. A missing exhibit needs a request for the document. Giving each one an explicit next action makes the review easier to supervise.
For a revised agreement, identify which findings were rechecked and which remain tied to an earlier version. Do not carry an old approval forward by copying the issue list unchanged. Keep the current result connected to the document the lawyer actually reviewed.
The broader AI for legal documents guide covers adjacent document work, while AI assistants for lawyers addresses wider practice workflows. An AI brain is useful here only to the extent that its record contains accurate, permitted instructions and progress.
How to do this with fenbs
- Create a free account and test with a public or synthetic document before considering any matter information.
- If the firm approves the use, add a project with only the permitted details. Record the data boundary and lawyer-approved review instructions in Decisions and rules.
- Create tasks for the defined review questions. Keep the documents in approved storage and record source references or findings only where the firm’s policy allows them.
- Connect an approved assistant through Integrations. Ask it to read the rules first and save permitted progress, including unresolved questions and the responsible human review step.
fenbs does not perform legal document review or replace a firm’s document management, discovery, or privilege-review system. If the firm cannot approve the necessary information being stored or accessed there, keep the matter workflow in its approved systems. People make decisions and sign off; an assistant can record what they chose.
The AI at work hub has more checked-output workflows. For a first trial, aim for a small review in which every finding has a source and every open question has a clear human next step.
