Obsidian AI Flashcards: Turn Notes Into Study Questions

Use AI to draft flashcards from your Obsidian notes, then check each answer before studying it. Keep the questions small, the sources attached, and the mistakes useful.

Updated 5 min read

To make Obsidian AI flashcards, give an assistant a small, reliable note and ask for one question and one supported answer per card. Check the drafts against your original material before putting them into your review system. AI can suggest questions quickly; you still choose what is worth learning and whether each answer is correct.

Tools like fenbs can keep your study goals, approved card-making prompts, and lessons from mistakes available between AI sessions. Keep the actual study notes and cards in the tools you use to read and practice.

How do you turn one note into a checked set of cards?

  1. Choose one note about a single topic. Remove unrelated material, unfinished guesses, and personal information you do not want to send to an AI service.
  2. Write the learning goal above the excerpt: define key terms, distinguish two concepts, apply a rule, or explain a process.
  3. Ask for a small draft set with a question, an answer, and the source heading for every card. Tell the assistant to flag missing information instead of filling gaps.
  4. Compare each answer with your note and the underlying reading. Correct the source note first if it contains the mistake.
  5. Test the cards yourself before adding them to regular review. Split questions that require several unrelated answers and remove duplicates.

You can do this by copying a selected excerpt into an assistant and copying the checked cards back. Obsidian stores notes as Markdown plain text in a local vault (opens in a new tab), so you do not need a special AI file format. Keep an untouched source note while you experiment with the generated version.

What makes a useful question rather than a miniature summary?

A useful card gives you a clear way to decide whether your answer was right. Avoid prompts such as “Explain chapter four” or answers that simply repeat an entire paragraph. Ask the assistant to identify the particular distinction you need to remember, then write a question that tests it without giving the answer away.

Match the question to the learning goal
GoalQuestion patternWhat to check
Recall a definitionWhat does this term mean in this course? The answer includes the defining feature, not a circular synonym.
Distinguish conceptsWhat separates concept A from concept B?The contrast comes from the source and states the relevant condition.
Apply a principleGiven this short situation, which rule applies and why?The example has enough information for one defensible answer.
Remember a sequenceWhat happens immediately after this step? The order matters, and the card does not hide necessary context.

For example, a statistics note might produce “Does correlation alone establish causation?” That is easy to recognize without understanding it. A stronger follow-up asks what extra evidence would help distinguish a causal explanation from a confounding explanation. Use the wording your course actually teaches, and have a teacher or subject expert check material you cannot confidently assess.

What should you ask the assistant to generate?

Set the source boundary and output shape before asking for cards. A bounded request makes missing evidence visible and gives you a predictable review checklist. Start with this prompt, replacing the topic and goal with your own:

Prompt for a small draft set
Use only the note excerpt below.
Learning goal: distinguish the main concepts in this section.
Draft up to eight flashcards.
For each card return: question, concise answer, source heading, and any uncertainty.
Test one idea per card. Keep necessary conditions and exceptions.
Do not invent facts, examples presented as facts, or source references.
If the note is incomplete, list the missing information instead.

Note excerpt:
[paste your checked material]

Keep the first output as a draft. If the assistant gives you too many cards, ask which ones test the same idea and retain the clearest question. If it introduces unfamiliar facts, remove those cards until you have checked a real source. A citation-looking label is not evidence unless you can find the relevant passage.

Save the prompt that produces reviewable questions in fenbs Skills and prompts, along with the subject and level it works for. That is more reusable than saving a large pile of unchecked output.

How do the drafts become cards you can review?

Decide where review will happen before formatting a whole deck. You can keep questions and answers in separate sections of an Obsidian note for manual self-testing. For scheduled flashcard review, check the exact syntax and scheduling behavior of your chosen plugin or flashcard app; a question-and-answer list is not automatically a working deck.

If you use Anki, its text-file import guide (opens in a new tab) explains supported separators and field mapping. Try importing two checked cards first, inspect which text appears on each side, and check duplicate handling before importing the rest. Preserve your original notes so a bad import does not become your only copy.

Installing a plugin also means trusting its code. Obsidian explains that community plugins inherit the app’s access levels (opens in a new tab), rather than receiving a narrow permission for only one note. Review what a plugin reads and sends before using it with a sensitive vault. The separate Obsidian AI plugin guide covers choosing that kind of connection.

What should you change when you keep missing a card?

Look at the failure before asking AI for more questions. You might be missing a fact, confusing two similar terms, misunderstanding the source, or struggling with a vague card. Those are different problems. If the question has several reasonable answers, improve the question instead of treating every disagreement as a memory failure.

Ask the assistant to propose a clearer version using the same source, then check the revision. For an application question, try a fresh hypothetical example so you do not merely memorize its wording. If an exception changes the answer, make the condition explicit on the front of the card.

How fenbs helps

Keep the study method that worked

Save your approved card-making prompt and learning goals in fenbs. Record a lesson when a misleading question teaches the wrong distinction, including what to change next time. A connected assistant can read that record before drafting the next set.

How to do this with fenbs

  1. Create a free account, then add a project for the course or certification you are studying.
  2. Save the learning goals as project context and your checked generation prompt in Skills and prompts. Describe what a satisfactory card must include.
  3. Connect a supported assistant through Integrations. Ask it to read the project context before helping with a new excerpt you supply.
  4. Track unresolved source questions as tasks and save lessons from repeated card mistakes. Before stopping, save which notes were checked and where to begin next.

fenbs does not generate a scheduled flashcard deck or connect directly to your Obsidian vault. If all you need is private note-taking and daily card review in one app, your existing setup may be enough. The value here is preserving the study instructions and unfinished work across assistants.

How do you keep the system small enough to maintain?

Finish one note before generating cards from another. Add new questions only when they serve a learning goal, and retire cards whose source has changed. Keep a short list of concepts that need teaching rather than making ever more questions about material you do not yet understand.

Questions people ask.

Do I need an AI plugin to make cards from Obsidian notes?

No. You can copy a selected excerpt into an assistant, review its questions, and save the checked result. A plugin may reduce copying, but you still need to inspect its data access and verify the cards.

Should AI generate cards from an entire textbook at once?

Start with a smaller section and a specific learning goal. Large drafts are harder to verify and can repeat trivia while missing the distinctions you actually need to learn.

Can I trust a card because the assistant includes a source heading?

The heading helps you find the evidence, but it does not prove the answer is accurate. Open the note and underlying reading and confirm that they support the complete answer.

What if a flashcard answer has several exceptions?

State the relevant conditions in the question or split the material into separate cards. Keep exceptions that change the meaning, even if that makes the answer slightly longer.
