How to Save an AI Thread and Continue the Work Later

Save the conversation for reference, then write a short restart note with the approved decisions, current files, checks and next step. That gives your next session a useful starting point.

To save an AI thread for later work, keep an available conversation export or share link and write a separate restart note. The note should say what you were trying to do, what you approved, what was checked and exactly where to begin next. fenbs can keep that reviewed work record outside the chat, so another connected assistant can read it when you return.

A long thread may contain several abandoned approaches. Saving every message preserves the discussion, but it leaves the next reader to discover which answer you actually chose. Treat the transcript as supporting material and the restart note as the starting instructions. The same distinction runs through our AI handoff guides.

What should you save before closing the thread?

  1. Identify the stopping point. Name the project and the last useful output, such as the revised proposal or the working contact form.
  2. Save the conversation through an option your app supports. Check the vendor help page and your account settings rather than assuming every account offers the same export.
  3. Write a restart note. Separate completed work, decisions, remaining checks and questions that need a person to answer.
  4. Test the saved material. Open the file or link, confirm its audience, and check that the next step still makes sense without reading the entire thread.

Do this at a natural stopping point, such as after reviewing a draft or running a check. If you are interrupted earlier, save the interruption itself: the last change is unreviewed, the test is still running, or the client has not answered. Accurate unfinished work is easier to continue than an optimistic summary.

Which saved format serves your next session?

Choose by what you need to recover
FormatUseful when you needWhat to verify
Conversation exportA local copy of the discussion to inspect later.Which messages and files are included, and whether the downloaded content opens.
Shared conversation linkSomeone else to review the conversation in its original presentation.Who can open it, whether it is a snapshot, and what happens if the source disappears.
Reviewed progress recordA person or another assistant to continue the actual task. The approved outcome, current materials, checks and next action are explicit.

These formats can work together. Keep a private export if you need the discussion, then give the next session only the relevant progress record and authorized source material. You do not need to paste every abandoned draft into a fresh conversation.

Anthropic documents account exports through Settings > Privacy in its Claude export guide (opens in a new tab). Available controls depend on your account and organization role. An exported archive does not by itself establish that another app can import the thread or resume its tools.

Give the saved copy a recognizable project name and date. Add a note identifying the task it supports, so you can find the right discussion without opening several archives. Keep the current restart note easy to find beside that reference.

What does a shared link actually preserve?

Check the sharing behavior of the specific app. Claude lets you share a chat with specific people (opens in a new tab), who see a snapshot and cannot continue the conversation. Later messages need a snapshot update, and raw connector data is excluded. A visible answer therefore may not carry all the material used to produce it.

Google describes Gemini shared conversations (opens in a new tab) as public links that show the conversation at sharing time. Anyone with the link can read it, and later changes to the original do not update that snapshot. Check every included message before sharing a work thread.

A recipient opening a link is a different test from a recipient being able to continue your work. They may still need access to the actual document, repository or research source. Record those locations separately, with enough description to distinguish the approved version from an earlier draft.

If your starting point was a search result rather than an ongoing work thread, see saving an AI Overview or saving AI Mode chats for those separate workflows.

What belongs in a useful restart note?

Write the smallest explanation that lets someone act correctly. Say which output is current, why it was chosen, and what evidence supports the completion claim. Include a location someone can open, rather than saying the file is above or the answer is in the previous chat.

Example restart note for a proposal draft
Goal: Finish the client website proposal.
Current output: proposal-v3 in the project folder.
Decision: The owner chose a two-phase delivery.
Reason: The client needs the contact page first.
Checked: The draft matches the approved list of pages.
Not checked: Delivery dates need confirmation.
Next step: Ask the owner to confirm the dates before sending.
Reference: Private conversation archive, saved October 20, 2026.

Ask the assistant to draft this note, then read it yourself. Correct any claim that a suggestion was approved or a check passed when it did not run. In the example, the proposal can be ready for date review without being ready to send. That distinction should survive the saved thread.

An AI brain is useful when this record needs to outlast one conversation. In fenbs, tasks, Decisions and rules, and Where we left off keep the outcome and next action together; how it works explains that work record.

How fenbs helps

Save the outcome that the next thread needs

Add the unfinished task, record the decision a person made, and save Where we left off in fenbs. History records who changed the work, while the next connected assistant can read the current starting point. Keep your original archive separately when you need the conversation itself.

How can you check that the work is ready to resume?

Start a fresh session with the saved note and ask the assistant to explain its first action before doing it. Check that it recognizes outstanding approval, missing files and unrun checks. If it proposes sending the example proposal immediately, the handoff has failed its most useful test.

Confirm that referenced materials are still current. A draft may have changed after the note was written; a local process may have stopped. Reading yesterday's conversation cannot establish today's file state. This is a practical habit for using AI at work: verify the evidence before continuing an action that depends on it.

How to do this with fenbs

  1. Create a free account. fenbs is free for one person, no credit card. Add the project whose thread you want to continue.
  2. Add or update the relevant task. Put remaining steps in its plan and record the checks that ran, their results and what remains unverified.
  3. Record what a person approved in Decisions and rules. Keep unanswered choices open, with enough context for that person to decide.
  4. Connect a supported AI app through Integrations. MCP, a standard way for an AI app to use an outside tool, lets the assistant read and update the project record after browser sign-in.
  5. Save Where we left off before stopping. In the next session, ask the assistant to read the project context, including Rules first, then explain the next step before starting.

fenbs does not import your chat history. It is not the right fit if you only need an untouched transcript archive. Use its AI handoff workflow when you want the reviewed decisions and progress to remain available across supported AI apps.

When should you update the saved starting point?

Update the record whenever the next action changes. A person approving the dates, a failed check, or a newly found missing page all change where the following session should begin. Preserve the earlier reasoning where needed, but make the current instruction easy to identify.

When the task is finished, record the final output and verification instead of leaving an old next step active. A saved thread should help you recover the work without accidentally restarting something that is already complete.

Questions people ask.

Is a screenshot enough to restart an AI task?

A screenshot can preserve a useful passage, but it may omit sources, files and later corrections. Add the current output, approval state and next step in text so the next session can use them.

Will a new AI app remember the saved thread automatically?

Do not assume so. Give the new app the relevant material or connect it to a work record it can read, then check its understanding before it acts.

Should I delete the original chat after making a progress note?

Keep it for as long as your work and organization policies require. First verify that the saved record and any needed source material are accessible; a summary may not preserve every detail you later need.

Can an assistant write the handoff for me?

Yes, but review the result. Check decisions against what a person actually approved and checks against what actually ran, especially when the conversation explored several approaches.
