How to Give Claude Internet Access for Research
Claude can search the web and retrieve specific pages in supported apps, but each method works differently. Here is what to enable and what to expect.

You can give Claude internet access through web search in Claude.ai, or through a browsing tool in Claude Code and Claude desktop. Which method is available depends on the app and plan you use. Tools like fenbs help you save the links, verified findings, and open questions from a session so they survive the chat.
Internet access for Claude covers two separate things: searching the web for current results, and fetching the content of a specific URL. Both are useful, but they work differently. Knowing which one you need will save time and prevent confusion when Claude cannot fulfill a request.
Web search vs. page retrieval
Web search lets Claude query a search engine and read result summaries or source pages. Page retrieval means asking Claude to open a URL you provide and read what is on it. Some apps offer one, some offer both, and a few offer neither without extra setup.
Web search is the right choice when you want current information about a topic. Page retrieval works when you already have a URL and want Claude to summarize it, extract data, or check a claim against its contents.
How to enable web search in Claude.ai
Claude.ai includes a web search tool that Claude can call when it needs current information. In most conversations, Claude decides when to search; you can also ask it to search explicitly. Look for the web search toggle in the message composer and confirm it is on.
When Claude searches, it cites its sources in the response. Read those citations before relying on a result. Claude can misread a page or choose a source that does not fully support its claim. A cited source lets you verify.
How to retrieve a specific page
Paste a URL into the conversation and ask Claude to read it. In Claude.ai, Claude can fetch publicly accessible pages when web browsing is enabled. Claude Code and Claude desktop can use MCP tools that provide a browser or a URL-fetching capability, depending on what you have set up.
If Claude says it cannot open a link, check three things: the page may require a sign-in, the site may block automated access, or web browsing may not be active in your plan or app.

What Claude cannot access
Claude cannot read pages that require a login: your email inbox, a company intranet, a subscription publication, or a private social media profile. It also cannot bypass paywalls or retrieve documents from personal cloud storage using a URL alone.
Reddit is a common example. While Reddit is publicly visible in a browser, its access policies mean Claude often gets an incomplete or refused response when fetching threads. For Reddit content, copy and paste the relevant text into the conversation.
Authenticated sessions are also out of scope. If your login status changes what a site shows you, Claude only sees the unauthenticated version. It receives whatever an anonymous visitor without cookies would get, which is often a login wall or a stripped-down page.
How to check what Claude actually read
Ask Claude to quote the passage it is drawing on. If it cannot produce a direct quote tied to the URL, it may have used a cached summary or its training data rather than the live page. A quote you can check is evidence; a paraphrase without a source is not.
For important research, open the source yourself and confirm the key claim. AI tools can misread context, extract the wrong section, or miss a nuance. A direct check takes a few minutes and prevents a bigger problem later.
Keeping research links beyond the chat
Research done in a chat disappears when the session ends. If you open a new conversation, Claude does not remember which pages it read or what they confirmed. Saving sources and findings in a durable record keeps them available for future sessions and other tools.
fenbs has a Links and listings record where you can note the sources you checked, what each one confirmed, and any questions still open. The next connected assistant reads the same record, so a good source found today does not need to be found again.
Keep verified research available after the chat
fenbs lets you save research links, what each source confirmed, and open questions alongside your project tasks. Connect Claude or another supported AI app over MCP from Integrations, and each new session picks up where the last one left off.

How to do this with fenbs
- Create a free account. Your personal board is free and needs no credit card.
- Add a project for the topic you are researching. Write a short description of the research goal.
- As you work, add tasks for questions you need to answer. Paste links and notes into each task or into Links and listings.
- Connect Claude to fenbs over MCP from Integrations. Follow the guide for Claude.ai or Claude Code.
- At the start of each session, ask Claude to read the project context. Before you stop, ask it to save what it found and what still needs checking.
fenbs does not import your Claude conversations and does not train a model. It keeps the structured record your research produces: the sources, the verified answers, and what still needs work.
