How to Give Claude Access to Google Drive
Claude connects to Google Drive through file uploads or an MCP server, each with different access levels. Here is how to set up each route and what to expect.

You can give Claude access to Google Drive in two main ways: uploading individual files into a conversation, or connecting Drive through an MCP server that lets Claude browse and read your files directly. Tools like fenbs keep the linked documents, decisions made about them, and follow-up tasks in one place that any connected assistant can read across sessions.
This guide explains both approaches, when to use each, and what Claude can and cannot do once connected.
Uploading Drive files directly
The simplest method is to download a file from Drive and upload it into your Claude conversation. Claude.ai supports Google Docs, Sheets, PDFs, and common document formats. The file is available for the current conversation only and is not stored between sessions.
This works well for a single document review, a quick summary, or a one-off task. It does not give Claude access to your full Drive or the ability to read files you have not manually uploaded.
Connecting Drive through an MCP server
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is a standard way for AI apps to connect to outside tools. A Google Drive MCP server lets Claude browse your Drive, list files, and read their contents without you having to download and upload each one. See Google Drive MCP for setup details.
Once connected, you can ask Claude to find a specific document, read a shared folder, or pull content from a file by name. Claude acts with the permissions you granted during setup, which typically means read access to files you have chosen to share.
Claude Code and Claude desktop both support MCP connections. Claude.ai can also use MCP servers depending on your plan. Check the Integrations page for the current setup guide.
What each method can and cannot do
| Method | What it can do | What it cannot do |
|---|---|---|
| File upload | Read a single document in the current chat. | Access other Drive files, remember the file across sessions, or write back to Drive. |
| MCP server | Browse Drive, list files, and read documents without manual download. | Write to Drive unless the server is configured for write access. Access files outside the shared scope. |
Write access and its risks
Some Drive MCP setups allow Claude to create or edit files. Before enabling write access, decide which folders Claude may change and record that decision clearly. A broad write permission is hard to audit after the fact.
If you need Claude to draft content and place it in Drive, a safer pattern is to have Claude produce the output in the chat, review it yourself, and then save it to Drive manually. This keeps you in control of what enters shared storage, and it creates a clear record of what was reviewed before it was saved rather than a direct file change that may be hard to trace later.
Reviewing and revoking Drive access
Once an MCP server connects Claude to your Drive, review the scope it was granted before relying on it for important work. Open your Google Account security page and look under Third-party apps with account access. You will see the OAuth scope the server requested: whether it can read all files, only specific folders, or only files you explicitly open with the app.
If the scope is broader than you intended, revoke the connection and reconnect with a more restricted setup. Most Drive MCP server documentation describes how to request read-only access or limit the connection to a particular folder. A narrower scope is easier to audit and produces fewer unexpected results if Claude misreads an instruction.
Review the connection when your project changes. If a folder you originally shared now contains material you want to keep private, remove the connection and reconfigure it for a more specific subfolder. Treat Drive access like any other permission: grant what the task requires and revisit it when the task changes.
Keeping document links and decisions across sessions
Even with an MCP connection, Claude starts fresh in each new session and does not remember which Drive documents it reviewed previously. If you ask it to continue a task from an earlier session, it needs context about what was done.
Saving the linked documents, the decisions made about them, and the next steps in fenbs gives each session a starting point. The next assistant reads the same record rather than asking you to re-explain.
Keep document links and decisions together
Add a project in fenbs for the work that involves Drive files. Link to the relevant documents, record decisions made about them, and note the next step. Connect Claude over MCP from Integrations and each session starts with the full context, not just the files.

How to do this with fenbs
- Create a free account. Your personal board is free and needs no credit card.
- Add a project for the work that uses Drive files. Write a short description of the goal.
- Add tasks for documents that need review or action. Paste the Drive link into each task so any assistant can find it.
- Record decisions about those documents in Decisions and rules: which version is approved, which draft to use, which section needs revision.
- Connect Claude to fenbs over MCP from Integrations so each session reads the project context alongside the Drive content.
fenbs does not store your Drive files and does not connect to Google directly. It keeps the structured work context that Claude needs to use those files effectively.
