How to Export ChatGPT to Obsidian as Useful Markdown Notes

Save useful ChatGPT conversations in Obsidian with clear filenames, original messages, and source links. Keep the reference notes connected to the work they inform.

Updated 6 min read

To export ChatGPT to Obsidian, copy the conversation you need into a note, separate your prompts from the answers, and save it as Markdown, a plain-text format for headings, lists, and links. Add the original chat address and the sources worth checking so the saved note remains useful outside ChatGPT.

You can do this without installing an AI plugin. Obsidian holds the reference material; tools like fenbs keep the active tasks, decisions, and next steps connected to it. Start with one conversation you expect to use again rather than copying your entire history.

How do you save one conversation as a note?

  1. Open the original conversation. Choose the useful exchange, including the question and any later correction that changes the answer.
  2. Open your Obsidian vault, the folder holding your notes, and create a new note. Give it a descriptive name such as kitchen-layout-options-chatgpt.
  3. Paste the selected messages. Add headings such as My prompt and ChatGPT response so a reader can tell who said what.
  4. At the top, record the capture date, original chat address, and whether this is the complete conversation or selected messages. Put your own summary in a separate section.
  5. Check the saved note against the chat. Open its links and inspect any tables, code, images, or attachments before treating the transfer as complete.

Already have a Markdown file? Obsidian’s Markdown import instructions (opens in a new tab) explain how to drag it into the file explorer or copy it into the vault folder. If you save through a text editor, use the .md extension and check that the filename does not end in .md.txt.

What should you name the file and keep inside?

Name the note for the subject you will search for later. kitchen-layout-options-chatgpt.md tells you more than chat-export-12.md. Add a date when you need to distinguish versions, and keep names simple enough to work across your devices: words, numbers, and hyphens are a practical starting point.

## My summary
Write your own short explanation of why this exchange matters.

## My prompt
Paste the original question here.

## ChatGPT response
Paste the answer without silently changing it.

## Corrections and checks
Record later corrections and what you verified.

## Sources
Add the original source URLs and what each supports.

## Related work
Record the project name, current task reference, and related note names.

Keep an original answer distinct from your edited interpretation. If you shorten a conversation, label it as an excerpt and include the qualifying statements that affect its meaning. Do not ask the model to recreate missing messages and then store the reconstruction as a transcript.

When a note changes an active project, record the task reference beside it and keep the current work state in fenbs. That gives you a route back from a useful reference to the action it informed.

How do you preserve sources and connect related notes?

Keep two kinds of source: the conversation that produced the text and the original documents that support its claims. A chat address helps you revisit the exchange; it does not prove the answer. Open the cited documents yourself and record which statement each one supports, especially when the answer may influence client work.

You do not need to publish a conversation to record its address. If you choose to create a shared link, review the audience and content first: OpenAI’s sharing guidance (opens in a new tab) says personal-account links are viewable by anyone who has them, while managed-workspace links have different access rules. A link in your note does not grant the next reader access.

Connect the saved conversation to its project note with [[Kitchen remodel]], or use an ordinary Markdown link. Obsidian documents both formats in its internal links guide (opens in a new tab). Use a consistent project name so related research is easy to find without making duplicate copies of the same exchange.

How fenbs helps

Keep the reference attached to its next step

In fenbs, add the active project and task, then record the Obsidian note’s filename and location in the task note. Use Links and listings for source URLs your collaborators are allowed to open. Keep approved decisions with the work so an old AI suggestion does not become the current instruction.

What if you have many conversations to move?

Treat a large transfer as two jobs: obtain the source archive, then select and prepare the notes you want in Obsidian. OpenAI’s data export instructions (opens in a new tab) describe eligible export options and the downloaded ZIP archive. Keep that original separately; do not assume every file inside it is ready to become a Markdown note.

For obtaining the source material, use the guides to exporting ChatGPT chats and exporting ChatGPT data; the steps here concern organizing the resulting conversation notes in Obsidian.

Before converting a whole archive, try one short chat and one complicated chat with follow-up corrections. Compare the results to the originals. If you use a converter, check what it sends elsewhere and whether it preserves message order, alternate answers, and attachments. Import the checked files into a separate folder first so mistakes are easy to remove.

Why does pasted text look wrong or incomplete?

  • Headings or lists look flat: add Markdown headings and list markers. Obsidian’s formatting guide explains the syntax.
  • Code loses indentation: put it in a fenced code block and compare it with the original before running anything.
  • A table is hard to read: rebuild a small table or use labeled bullet points, checking every value.
  • Images or attachments are missing: save permitted copies separately and link them from the note; copied text alone is not a complete attachment archive.
  • The answer contradicts the chat: check whether you omitted a later correction or copied only one version of a response.

Use Obsidian’s basic formatting reference (opens in a new tab) for repairs. If you only need a reading note, a clean summary plus a clearly labeled excerpt is often easier to maintain than a visually exact copy. Preserve the original separately when the full exchange matters.

ChatGPT MD is a separate community plugin for chatting with AI inside notes, as its maintainer’s documentation (opens in a new tab) explains. You do not need it for this manual transfer. Adding an AI conversation feature inside Obsidian is a different choice from saving an existing ChatGPT conversation as a reference.

How do saved notes stay useful when the work changes?

Say you save a conversation proposing three kitchen layouts. The note preserves those options, but a person later approves only one. Keep the historical exchange intact and record the approval, its reason, and the next task in your current work record. Otherwise, a future reader may mistake an abandoned suggestion for the plan.

If your company is involved, check its rules before moving work into a personal vault; our ChatGPT for business guide covers the broader company-work questions. If you later change assistants, the ChatGPT alternatives guide covers that separate choice. Keep the saved reference readable whichever assistant you use.

Put the current decision and next step in fenbs’s shared work record, with enough context that the next assistant does not need access to your local vault to understand the task.

How to do this with fenbs

  1. Create a free account, free for one person with no credit card, and add the project the saved conversation belongs to.
  2. Add the current task. In its note, record the Obsidian note’s exact filename and folder, plus the short finding that affects the work. Add suitable source URLs to Links and listings.
  3. Record what a person approved in Decisions and rules. Leave unresolved options open rather than turning an AI recommendation into an agreement.
  4. Ask a connected assistant to read the project context before working and save Where we left off before stopping. Include what changed, what was checked, and the next step.

fenbs does not import or search your Obsidian vault. A recorded filename is a reference for someone who can access that vault, not a way for an assistant to read the file. If all you need is a personal collection of saved chats, Obsidian alone may be enough; the second-brain topic hub has more ways to organize reference knowledge.

Questions people ask.

Does saving a chat in Obsidian move my ChatGPT memory?

No. A Markdown note holds the text you saved. It does not transfer account settings, saved memories, or the surrounding state of your ChatGPT account.

Should I save a transcript or a summary?

Save a transcript when wording and message order matter. Save a summary when you mainly need the useful conclusions, and label it clearly. Keeping both in separate sections makes it easier to check your interpretation against the original.

Will my saved note update when the chat changes?

Not with the manual workflow described here. It is a snapshot of the messages you copied. Add later corrections yourself and record when you updated the note.

Can someone else open the original chat from my note?

Only if they have permission to access that conversation or you provide a shared link they are allowed to open. Recording an address does not change access. Review the content and audience before sharing.
