How to Export a ChatGPT Deep Research Report

Download a completed research report, check that its citations survived and keep a clear record of the sources and questions that still need work.

To export a ChatGPT deep research report, open the completed report and use its download option to choose an available format, such as PDF, Word or Markdown. Open the downloaded file and test its citations before relying on it. Saving the text is only part of preserving research you can verify later.

Keep the report in your document storage. fenbs can retain the report link, verified sources and unresolved work so another assistant can continue the investigation without treating an unreviewed report as an approved conclusion.

What are the steps to download the completed report?

  1. Open the conversation that contains the research and select the completed report.
  2. Use the report’s download option and choose the available format suited to your next step.
  3. Save the file with a descriptive topic, version and date rather than leaving an ambiguous default name.
  4. Open the file in the app the recipient will use. Check the beginning, middle, conclusion, tables and references.
  5. Test important citations and write down any missing content or unresolved source access before sharing.

OpenAI’s deep research guide (opens in a new tab) says completed reports can be downloaded in formats including Markdown, Word and PDF. It also describes the report view’s sources and activity history. Use the report itself as your comparison point when checking the saved copy.

Export the completed report rather than asking for a new summary and assuming it is equivalent. A condensed answer may omit qualifications, supporting evidence or part of a table. If you need a shorter version, keep it as a separate derivative document with the full report beside it.

Which file format should you choose?

Choose by how the report will be used
FormatA useful choice forWhat to inspect
PDFA stable reading copy for review and reference.Page breaks, table clipping and clickable source links.
WordEditing, comments and a document review process.Headings, lists, references and changes made after export.
MarkdownPlain text storage or reuse in a compatible editor.Link destinations, tables and how the editor renders them.

Choose the format the recipient can actually use. A polished reading copy may be helpful for a client, while an editable version may suit a colleague checking the argument. When both are needed, keep their version labels aligned so comments do not refer to different drafts.

Do not assume that a format’s appearance proves its completeness. An export can have a tidy title and still omit a reference or wrap a table poorly. Check the saved result against the original report before adding your own edits, because that makes export problems easier to distinguish from later revisions.

How do you check that citations and references survived?

Pick the claims that matter most to the decision the report supports. Follow each citation from the downloaded file and confirm it reaches the intended source. Then read enough of the source to establish whether it supports the claim, including any limitations the report may have compressed.

  • Check that citation numbers or labels still point to the correct references.
  • Open the actual destination rather than judging the link by its visible label.
  • Record the source title, publisher and relevant section for important evidence.
  • Distinguish a public source from a document that needs an account or workplace permission.
  • Flag unsupported or uncertain claims instead of polishing them into more confident wording.

For a hypothetical materials comparison, a citation about durability might support a laboratory result under narrow conditions. It does not automatically justify a recommendation for every building project. Preserve the condition in the report and in the handoff note so the next reviewer can see the limit.

Keep a short verification record: which claims you checked, where the evidence lives and what remains unconfirmed. That is useful portable AI memory. fenbs keeps those source references with the work through Links and listings.

What if the download is missing content or links?

First compare the problem section with the completed report in ChatGPT. Establish whether the material was present before the download. Try another available export format to see whether the problem concerns rendering, and retain the original file so you can identify which version a reviewer saw.

If you must copy a missing section manually, label the repair and preserve its source links explicitly. Do not ask an assistant to fill a gap from memory. A new paragraph with plausible citations is new research, and it needs its own verification rather than being silently inserted as recovered content.

Keep your independent copy before deleting or reorganizing the original chat. OpenAI’s chat and file retention guidance (opens in a new tab) explains that retention depends on the content and workspace policy, and deleted chats cannot be restored. A saved report and a live conversation should be treated as separate records.

For problems with the research run itself, see deep research not working. For the broader process before export, see the ChatGPT deep research workflow. Neither a fresh run nor a fresh download removes the need to check the result.

How fenbs helps

Keep the report attached to its evidence

Save the report location and useful source references in fenbs, then add tasks for claims that still need checking. Record what a person decided separately from what the report recommends. The next connected assistant can read that distinction and continue the unresolved work.

How to do this with fenbs

  1. Create a free account and add the research project. One person is free, with no credit card.
  2. Add the report location and verified source references to Links and listings or the relevant project context notes. Keep the actual documents in your document storage.
  3. Create tasks for unanswered questions and checking work. Record the evidence already reviewed and its result, rather than calling the report complete solely because it downloaded.
  4. Connect a supported assistant using Integrations. Ask it to read the context before continuing and save Where we left off when the session ends.

fenbs does not export ChatGPT reports, import your chat history or verify citations automatically. It is not the right fit if you only need a static report file. It helps when research leads to tasks, decisions and follow-up work that must remain clear across sessions.

What should accompany the report when work continues?

Include the question investigated, the report version, the important sources checked and the remaining uncertainties. Say who should review the result and what decision it is intended to inform. This gives the recipient a way to use the research without mistaking every recommendation for an agreement.

A shared AI brain keeps that continuing work available to connected assistants. Start small: one report reference, the most important evidence and the first unresolved task. The AI handoffs hub brings together related ways to preserve work when a conversation or tool changes.

Questions people ask.

Should I export a summary instead of the full report?

Keep the full report first. A summary can be useful for a different audience, but it may omit qualifications, source details or supporting tables that matter during verification.

Does a clickable citation prove the claim is correct?

No. Check that the destination is the intended source and that its content supports the specific claim, including conditions and limitations.

Will recipients be able to open every source?

Not necessarily. Some sources may require sign-in or workplace permission. Check access with the recipient and flag restricted references before handing over the report.

Can I edit the report after downloading it?

Use an editable format when available and preserve an original copy. Clearly label later revisions so reviewers can distinguish the exported report from your changes.
