ChatGPT Deep Research: Scope, Check, and Reuse Findings

Set a clear research question, verify the important sources, and keep the evidence, conclusions, and follow-up work distinct.

Updated 5 min read

Use ChatGPT deep research by defining a focused question, giving it the relevant constraints and sources, and checking the resulting report before acting on it. The useful output is a reviewable investigation with an evidence trail, not simply a longer answer.

A work record such as fenbs can keep the source links you checked, the decisions a person made from the findings, and the tasks that remain. That lets the next research session start from reviewed work instead of an unexplained conclusion.

How do you start a focused investigation?

  1. Write the question and the decision it should inform.
  2. Set the location, time period, audience, and exclusions.
  3. Provide relevant files or starting sources and explain their status.
  4. Request a report with source-supported findings, disagreements, and missing evidence.
  5. Review the important sources yourself, then save the checked result and next steps.

OpenAI’s research instructions (opens in a new tab) describe deep research in ChatGPT Work for investigations across multiple sources. The desktop app uses the Deep research plugin, while the web instructions describe selecting Deep research from the plus menu when available. Access depends on your account and workspace settings.

Choose an ordinary search for a single fact you can verify from one page. Use a deeper investigation when the answer requires comparing evidence or resolving several linked questions. If access or execution fails, the deep research troubleshooting guide owns that separate problem.

What makes a useful research request?

Describe the result you need in practical terms. Say a US architecture studio is choosing a way to reduce printing waste. “Research sustainable offices” is too broad. A useful request compares a few approaches to reducing unnecessary print jobs in a small office, with evidence, implementation needs, and uncertainties.

Specify what the assistant should leave out. The studio might exclude printer purchasing, employee monitoring, and claims about financial savings without a stated basis. Set those boundaries before the research begins so the report does not answer an adjacent question more confidently than the actual one.

A focused research request

Compare three approaches to reducing unnecessary printing in a small US office. Prefer original studies and official guidance. For each approach, explain the evidence, setting, implementation needs, and limitations. Separate measured results from suggestions. Identify contradictory findings and evidence gaps. End with questions our team must answer before selecting a pilot.

Define what counts as enough evidence. You may need a short list to discuss, a recommendation to test, or support for a formal report. Those outputs require different levels of verification. Do not ask the assistant to turn weak evidence into a decisive recommendation just to make the report feel complete.

Which source instructions should you include?

State your source preferences explicitly. Primary sources might include original research, official documentation, public datasets, or direct reports from the organization involved. A news story can point to a study, but the study itself is usually the better place to check its method and conclusions.

  • Give starting links and explain whether they are required evidence or simply leads.
  • Ask for publication dates and the period the underlying data covers.
  • Require a distinction between independent sources and pages repeating the same report.
  • Ask the assistant to identify sources it could not access instead of implying it read them.
  • Request evidence that challenges the leading option as well as evidence supporting it.

If you supply files, label their version and purpose. OpenAI’s file workflow guide (opens in a new tab) recommends giving the source material, expected structure, and review criteria for file-based work. Tell the assistant which document is approved and which is a working draft, rather than expecting it to infer authority from a filename.

Keep the reviewed reference URLs in fenbs Links and listings, with a note about what they support. A saved URL is more useful when the next assistant knows why it mattered.

How do you check a research report efficiently?

Start with the claims that could change the decision. Open each supporting source and read the relevant passage in context. Confirm the population, setting, time period, and conditions. A result from a large university print service may not transfer directly to a small studio.

A source check for each important finding
QuestionWhat it establishes
Does the source support the exact wording?Whether the report has overstated or changed the evidence.
What was actually measured?Whether a suggestion, survey answer, or observed result is being described accurately.
What are the limitations?Where the finding may not apply.
Are the sources independent?Whether apparent agreement comes from separate evidence.
What would change the conclusion?Which uncertainty deserves further investigation.

Check numbers separately. Preserve units and denominators, and inspect the original table when a calculation matters. When two studies disagree, compare their methods and settings before accepting a blended summary. The disagreement may be the most useful part of the investigation.

Ask for a focused revision after checking: name the claim, show the missing condition, and request a corrected conclusion. Our agile workflow guide can help organize unresolved checks as small tasks rather than leaving them buried in a long conversation.

What should you keep after the report is reviewed?

Keep three distinct records: what the evidence says, what your team thinks it means, and what a person decided to do. For the studio, an intervention supported in another setting is a finding. Trying it for a month is a proposed pilot. Approval of that pilot is a separate decision.

Add a review date when evidence could become outdated, and name the condition that would reopen the question. Preserve uncertainty in the handoff. “Promising approach, local impact untested” gives a future researcher a useful starting point; “best approach” hides the remaining work.

If several people maintain the research, agree who checks new evidence and who can change the decision. The workflow automation tools guide covers ways to organize repeatable work, but recurring collection still needs a clear standard for accepting a finding.

How fenbs helps

Make the evidence useful in the next session

Save reviewed research links in fenbs, create tasks for unanswered questions, and record the choice a person makes in Decisions and rules. Add Where we left off before the session ends. The next connected assistant can see the evidence behind the work and the next check to perform.

How to do this with fenbs

  1. Create a free account and add a project for the research question.
  2. Enter the verified source links with short notes explaining which findings they support. Keep the full report in its appropriate document location.
  3. Create tasks for missing evidence, unresolved comparisons, or a pilot. Record the actual checks performed and their results with the tasks.
  4. Record human-approved decisions and continuing research rules in Decisions and rules. Leave unanswered choices open.
  5. Connect a supported assistant through Integrations. Ask it to read the project context before continuing, then save progress and the next step before stopping.

fenbs does not import ChatGPT chats or automatically collect research reports. Enter the reviewed work yourself or ask a supported connected assistant to record the information you provide. If you only need a one-time answer and have no follow-up work, saving a document may be enough.

Try one reviewed finding and one unresolved task first. A new session should be able to explain both the conclusion and its limit. Find more ways to make research actionable in the AI at work hub.

Questions people ask.

Can deep research replace reading the sources?

No. It can help discover and organize evidence, but you should open the important sources and check the claims that affect your decision. A citation makes a finding easier to inspect; it does not prove the interpretation is correct.

Can I give ChatGPT my own research documents?

Where your ChatGPT surface supports the relevant file workflow, you can provide documents as context. Use material you are permitted to share, identify its version, and explain whether it is approved evidence or a draft.

Why do several citations sometimes lead to the same finding?

Different pages may all repeat one original study or announcement. Trace important claims back to the underlying source before treating the citations as independent confirmation.

How should I handle a source the assistant cannot open?

Mark it as unavailable and look for an accessible original or another suitable source. Do not treat a title, search snippet, or secondhand description as proof that the full source supports a claim.
