Turn Off Gemini Memory: What Changes and What Stays
Stop Gemini from using past chats for personalization, check the separate instructions switch, and understand what you have left in your account.

To turn off Gemini memory, open its personalization settings and switch Memory off. Check Your instructions for Gemini separately if you also want to stop applying saved preferences; disabling a feature is different from deleting its underlying information.
You can choose a smaller, deliberate work record instead of relying on personal recall. fenbs keeps the project decisions and progress you choose to share with connected assistants. Turning Gemini memory off does not change that separate record, so review both according to your intended boundary.
Which switches should you turn off?
- Check the Google Account in Gemini before changing anything. Choose the account whose future experience you intend to change.
- On the web, open Settings & help and the personalization area, labeled Personal context or Personal Intelligence. Set Memory to off.
- If you also want saved response preferences disabled, find Your instructions for Gemini and turn its switch off.
- Return to the settings screen and confirm both states. Write down which controls you changed so you can distinguish a full preference change from a one-chat experiment.
The Memory help page (opens in a new tab) and instructions help page (opens in a new tab) document separate controls. Menu labels can differ, so follow the setting names rather than assuming one switch covers every source of personalization.
What is the difference between stopping use and deleting?
Think of a preference switch as a choice about use. A deletion is a choice about removing selected material. If your goal is “do not bring my old preferences into new work,” check the switches. If your goal is “remove the information from my account,” inspect the entries and conversations too.
Those goals often travel together, but they need separate checks. A person taking a break from personalized answers might want to retain useful conversations. Someone removing an outdated personal detail might want the relevant material gone regardless of whether they later reenable personalization.
| Your goal | What to review |
|---|---|
| Stop using past-chat personalization | The Memory control |
| Stop applying saved response preferences | Your instructions for Gemini |
| Remove an unwanted detail | The instructions and conversations containing it |
| Change future activity saving | Keep Activity and its disclosures |
This distinction matters in every kind of agent memory. Decide the outcome before selecting a control. Otherwise, a settings change can feel like a reset while leaving the actual deletion task unfinished.
Should you change Keep Activity too?
Review Keep Activity when you also want to change how future Gemini activity is saved. Google provides Turn off and Turn off and delete activity as different actions in its activity management guide (opens in a new tab). Read the confirmation carefully so you understand whether you are changing future behavior or also deleting existing activity.
Do not select the broadest option merely because its wording sounds more complete. First decide whether you need the old conversations for reference. If useful project work is mixed with personal material, extract only the necessary work facts into an approved record before making a deletion choice.
An off switch is also not a promise of zero processing or immediate erasure. Google describes service, safety, and retention handling in its Privacy Hub (opens in a new tab). Use that explanation when your concern is data handling rather than whether a preference appears in the next answer.
Why might a reply still feel personalized?
Start by looking at the new prompt and the open conversation. If you already gave an assistant your occupation, preferred format, or project goals in that conversation, a tailored answer is not a useful test of cross-chat recall. Try a fresh chat and a neutral task before deciding that the control failed.
Also review connections you chose to enable. Google has separate controls for Connected Apps (opens in a new tab). An instruction switch should not be treated as a review of every outside source. Identify the source you want excluded, then use the control for that source.
Use a simple test log: account, setting state, fresh-chat question, and observed result. Leave sensitive values out. If the answer seems to know something unexpected, ask what source it used and inspect the source controls; do not assume every plausible guess is stored personal information.
What project context should remain available?
You can stop personal recall while still providing the facts needed for a particular job. Write a short starting note for that job: its goal, current decision, unfinished task, and the check still required. Supply only that context when you begin, with a clear scope for its use.
For example, a design studio can retain “use the approved short intake form” without retaining the entire conversation in which that choice was made. The useful part is the decision and its reason. The next person should be able to inspect that record instead of trusting an assistant’s recollection of it.
When colleagues need the same starting point, AI memory for teams becomes a record-keeping problem. In fenbs, people can keep agreed rules and task progress together while deciding what each member may access.
Choose the work your next assistant reads
Keep a project rule in Decisions and rules and the next action in Where we left off. A supported assistant reads those records when you ask it to begin the project. That gives you a deliberate starting point without asking Gemini to infer the project from personal chat history.

How to do this with fenbs?
- Create a free account, free for one person with no credit card, and add one active project.
- Record the project decisions you want to retain, including who decided and why. Do not transfer unrelated personal preferences just because they appeared in the same chat.
- Add the remaining tasks and save Where we left off. State what is done, what still needs checking, and the next action.
- Use the integration guide to connect a supported app, including Gemini CLI. Ask that assistant to read project context at the start and save progress before it stops.
fenbs is not the right fit if your only goal is changing a Gemini privacy setting. It does not switch Google controls for you or delete your Google activity. It is useful when you also need a separate, intentional record of ongoing work.
Where can you go for a different memory question?
