Gemini Memory Feature: What It Remembers Between Chats

Gemini memory can personalize later chats, but several different kinds of information sit behind that promise. Learn which details belong there and which need a separate project record.

The Gemini memory feature helps personalize answers across conversations using information you share and, where enabled, earlier chats. It is different from the context of the conversation you have open, and it should not be your only record of an important project.

A useful distinction is whether you want Gemini to know your preferences or whether another person must be able to verify what happened. Tools like fenbs keep explicit project decisions and progress outside a single AI account. That gives the next session something concrete to read, rather than asking it to reconstruct the work from remembered conversation.

What does memory mean in Gemini?

Google describes personalization through past chats and instructions in its Gemini personalization guide (opens in a new tab). Treat these as different inputs to an answer: directions you deliberately provide and information from previous conversations.

For example, “Explain unfamiliar terms before using them” is a reusable instruction. A past conversation about a design proposal provides background. Neither tells a teammate that the client approved the second draft unless that approval has been recorded somewhere the teammate can inspect.

This distinction also applies beyond Google. Our guide to AI assistant memory explains why stored information, retrieval and the current conversation are separate parts of remembering. You can improve the record you provide without changing the model itself.

What is the difference between saved details and past chats?

Three different sources of continuity
SourceWhat it contributesWhat you still need to check
Instructions or deliberately remembered detailsRecurring preferences or facts you want used again.Whether the detail remains accurate and is appropriate across unrelated tasks.
Past-chat personalizationBackground drawn from earlier conversations when that feature is available and enabled.Whether the response used the right conversation and interpreted it correctly.
Current conversation contextThe messages and material available for the present response.Whether the essential source and its latest correction are actually present.

Google also documents asking Gemini to remember particular details and correcting them in conversation. Availability differs from the ability to add response instructions; use the current remembered-information guide (opens in a new tab) to check your account rather than assuming every memory option is included.

Choose narrow, durable preferences. “Use US English” can help across many chats. “The proposal is approved” needs a project, a version, an approving person and a date to be useful. Without that scope, a true statement can become misleading when reused for another proposal.

Why is the context window a different thing?

A context window is the amount of information a model can work with for a response. Google’s long-context documentation (opens in a new tab) describes this as a kind of short-term memory. It is a model input boundary, not a promise that all your past work is stored and recalled.

Imagine putting a binder on a desk. A bigger desk makes room for more pages, but someone must still bring the correct binder, identify the current page and distinguish a draft from an approval. Conversation length and project continuity solve different parts of that problem.

For practical work, supply the current goal, the source you want used and the decision that controls the task. Ask the assistant to identify missing information before continuing. More background is useful only when it helps answer the actual question. In fenbs, the project context provides that deliberate starting record.

Does remembered information apply everywhere Gemini appears?

Do not infer a shared memory boundary from a shared product name. Google’s past-chat memory documentation (opens in a new tab) lists account requirements and feature exclusions, including Gems and Live chats. Check the exact surface you use before relying on continuity.

Your own test should also stay on that surface. A successful answer in a regular browser chat does not establish what a different experience can read. The guide to Gemini Gems covers reusable configurations; that is a separate job from proving which past project details are available.

Comparing assistants requires the same care. Our Claude and Gemini comparison considers broader workflow choices. For memory, the useful question is narrower: can this session find the current source, explain its relevance and admit when it cannot?

Which work details deserve an explicit record?

Keep anything another person may need to challenge, update or act on in a deliberate work record. That includes a decision, an unresolved question and a check that has not been run. Those details change what it is safe to do next.

  • Decision: the person approved version B, with the reason and any conditions.
  • Progress: the draft is written, but the figures still need review against the source spreadsheet.
  • Rule: a person must approve changes to information collected from clients.
  • Next step: confirm the figures before sending the draft for approval.

Notice that these statements describe the work rather than the person. A friendly response that remembers your preferred tone can still be wrong about approval. The fenbs workflow keeps decisions, tasks and Where we left off together so connected assistants can read that distinction.

How fenbs helps

Keep the project’s current answer visible

Add the project, record the person’s actual decision and save the remaining check in Where we left off. A supported connected assistant can read that work record at the start of its next session. fenbs keeps the work you explicitly record; it does not read your Gemini chat history.

How can you tell whether memory helped an answer?

Use a small, harmless example with a known answer. Ask for a short draft that should follow your writing preference, then inspect whether the result actually does. Separately ask a question about one previous discussion and compare the answer with the original conversation.

These are different tests. Following a style instruction does not establish accurate project recall. A plausible summary does not establish that the source was current. Correct the specific mismatch and repeat the same question before trusting the improvement on real work.

For the controls themselves, use the dedicated Gemini memory settings guide. Keep the larger principle simple: availability, inclusion and accuracy are three separate checks. A feature being switched on only addresses the first part of your workflow.

How to do this with fenbs?

  1. Create a free account, free for one person with no credit card, and add one project you already understand.
  2. Add its active tasks and record the agreed decisions and continuing rules. Keep suggestions distinct from choices a person has made.
  3. Follow Integrations for a supported assistant, including Gemini CLI. MCP is a standard connection to an outside tool; approve the connection through browser sign-in. This is separate from the consumer Gemini chat app.
  4. Ask the connected assistant to read the project context before working and save progress before stopping. Check its first summary against the decisions and outstanding tasks.

fenbs is not the right fit when you only want more personal recommendations inside Gemini. It becomes useful when the same work must survive a fresh session, a teammate or a change of assistant. Explore the AI memory hub when you need to choose which kind of continuity your work requires.

Questions people ask.

Will a new Gemini chat include my entire project history?

Do not assume that. Provide or retrieve the essential project record and verify the response against it, even when personalization is available.

Should I save a project deadline as a personal preference?

A deadline belongs with the project and its source. It changes over time and needs a clear scope; a general preference should remain useful across unrelated conversations.

Is a good remembered answer proof that future answers will be correct?

No. Test the details that matter for the next action, especially approvals, versions and unfinished checks. A correct earlier answer does not make a later summary authoritative.

Can fenbs automatically collect my Gemini memories?

No. You choose which project facts to record. A supported connected assistant can read and update that separate work record within its access.
