Does Gemini Pro Cost Money? App Plans vs. API Billing
Gemini Pro features in the Google app require a paid subscription. Accessing Gemini Pro through the API is billed separately by usage. Here is how the two billing paths work and what to compare before paying.

Gemini Pro does cost money, but the answer differs depending on how you access it. In the Google Gemini app, Pro features are behind a paid subscription plan. Through the Google AI or Vertex AI API, you pay per token — per unit of text processed — rather than a flat monthly fee. The two billing paths are separate, and upgrading your app subscription does not give you free API access.
Tools like fenbs keep project context outside any one AI app, so switching plans or moving to a different assistant does not mean rebuilding the task notes from scratch.
Gemini in the app: subscription access
The free tier of the Gemini app gives you access to Gemini's default model with usage limits. To use Gemini Pro (a more capable model) in the chat interface, you need a paid subscription such as Google One AI Premium, which bundles Gemini Advanced — the app name for Pro-tier model access — with expanded Google One storage and Workspace features.
Google also offers Gemini Pro access as part of Workspace plans for business users. What is included varies by tier. For current plan names and what each includes, check Google's Gemini pricing page (opens in a new tab) and the Google One plans page (opens in a new tab). Plan names and bundled features change, so read the current page rather than relying on a summary.
Gemini API: pay-per-token billing
If you use Gemini Pro through the Google AI API — in your own code, a third-party tool, or Google AI Studio — billing is separate from any app subscription. You pay per token: a token is roughly four characters of text in English. Input tokens (what you send to the model) and output tokens (what the model generates) are both counted, and the rate per token depends on which model you use.
Google AI Studio provides a free tier for prototyping, with rate limits on requests per minute and per day. When those limits are too low for production use, you move to a paid API project billed through Google Cloud. For current token rates and free tier limits, check the Google AI pricing page (opens in a new tab) directly. Rates change, and no summary should substitute for the current page.
Google AI vs. Vertex AI for the API
There are two API paths to Gemini Pro: Google AI (via AI Studio and the Google AI API) and Vertex AI (via Google Cloud). Both give you access to the Gemini Pro model, but Vertex AI is intended for enterprise production use: it has stronger data residency guarantees, more granular access controls and the ability to deploy to specific regions.
Google AI is simpler to start with for development and lower-volume production use. Vertex AI is more appropriate when compliance, data location and enterprise SLAs matter. Billing for both is per token, but the rate structure can differ slightly. Check the Google Cloud Vertex AI pricing page alongside the Google AI pricing page if you are evaluating both paths.
App subscription vs. API billing: key differences
The two paths are independent. You can have a Google One AI Premium subscription without any API use, and you can call the Gemini Pro API without a Google One subscription. Paying for one does not cover the other.
- App subscription: a flat monthly fee for Pro-tier access in the Gemini chat interface, bundled Google One storage and Workspace AI features.
- Google AI API billing: usage-based charge per token, billed to a Google Cloud project. No monthly flat fee beyond a free daily quota.
- Vertex AI billing: usage-based per token through Google Cloud, with enterprise features and regional deployment options.
- Workspace plans: include Gemini features inside Google Docs, Gmail, Meet and Sheets, priced per user per month.
When is Gemini Pro worth paying for?
Before upgrading, test the free Gemini model on your actual tasks. For many everyday jobs — drafting, summarizing, brainstorming, answering questions — the free model produces results you can use. Gemini Pro earns its place on tasks that need deeper reasoning, longer context, or features that are genuinely restricted to Pro on your plan.
If you are evaluating Gemini Pro for an application you are building, run both models on a sample of your real prompts and compare the quality difference. Only pay the Pro rate if the improvement is large enough to matter for the task. For high-volume applications, even a small quality improvement may not justify a significantly higher per-token rate.

Keep the work if you change plans or switch assistants
Project context — tasks, decisions and progress notes — lives in fenbs outside any one AI app. If you decide Gemini Pro is not what you need and move to a different plan or assistant, the work record stays intact. Connect the next assistant from Integrations and it starts from the same shared context.

How to do this with fenbs
- Create a free account and add your current project to fenbs.
- Write the task context and any decisions about which tools and plans you are using.
- Connect your AI app over MCP from Integrations.
- If you change plans or try a different assistant, the fenbs project record carries over automatically.
- Record the plan decision — why you chose Gemini Pro over alternatives — as a Decision so the next assistant understands the context.
