Copilot for Research: Find Sources and Check the Summary

Use Microsoft Copilot to investigate a focused question, inspect the sources, and distinguish documented evidence from generated conclusions.

Use Copilot for research by defining a question, choosing the source material, and opening the citations before accepting the summary. This guide concerns Microsoft Copilot for knowledge work. A useful result explains what the evidence supports, what the assistant inferred, and what you still need to establish.

Keep the reviewed references and next steps in a project record such as fenbs, especially when the investigation will continue in another session. GitHub Copilot is a separate coding product; the GitHub Copilot app guide covers that environment.

How do you run a focused investigation?

  1. Write the practical question, audience, geography, and time period. Say what decision the research will inform and what falls outside the scope.
  2. Identify whether the answer needs public web evidence, authorized work files, or both. Check the account and source controls available in your Copilot experience.
  3. Request findings with a source for each major claim, plus gaps and conflicting evidence. Ask for source details before a polished recommendation.
  4. Open the important citations and compare the original passages with the generated summary. Check dates, definitions, and qualifications.
  5. Record the reviewed findings, remaining questions, and the next action. Make a human decision only after reviewing the evidence and its limits.

For example, a facilities manager might investigate reusable food-service containers for a US office. “Which approach fits our cafeteria?” requires evidence about washing capacity, return rates, and operational constraints. A general sustainability overview cannot answer those local questions by itself.

Which Copilot experience should you use?

Microsoft distinguishes quick questions in Copilot Chat from deeper investigations in Researcher. Its Researcher guide (opens in a new tab) describes a source-cited report built from multiple sources, including permitted work content where available. Check that guide for current account access instead of assuming a particular subscription includes it.

If Researcher is available, Microsoft directs you to Agents in the Copilot app. Give it the question and answer any useful clarification questions. The same evidence review still applies if you use a shorter Copilot Chat exchange instead: you are responsible for checking the claims you intend to use.

You do not need an elaborate setup for one simple question. Start with the smallest investigation that can answer it. A broad report is useful when several sources and constraints need reconciliation; a narrow request may be easier to verify when you only need one definition or document passage.

How do you control which information informs the answer?

Distinguish public claims from internal requirements. In the cafeteria example, a supplier’s public care instructions might establish a washing requirement. An approved internal equipment list establishes what your site actually has. Label these sources separately so the final recommendation does not confuse a vendor statement with your organization’s capacity.

Microsoft’s source-control and citation instructions (opens in a new tab) explain the source controls in Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat. Work-data access and web search depend on the account and organizational settings. Inspect those controls and the resulting citations rather than assuming Copilot searched every relevant file.

If a required source is absent, name it explicitly or supply an authorized reference through your approved workflow. Ask what was inaccessible. Avoid widening sharing permissions merely to make a research answer easier; use information already approved for this purpose.

fenbs can preserve the research scope and reviewed reference links as project context, so a later session can see which evidence was included and which was missing.

How do you check a claim against its source?

Open the citation supporting the most consequential claim first. In the cited Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat instructions, you can inspect inline citations or use the Sources list. Once you have the original material open, read the passage around the referenced statement rather than relying on a highlighted fragment.

  • Check the source identity: an original policy, manufacturer document, or study carries different weight from a secondhand overview.
  • Check the applicable scope: the model, site, population, geography, and period must match your question.
  • Check the wording: “may reduce” and “does reduce” are different claims, as are a measured result and a proposed benefit.
  • Check the surrounding conditions: exceptions, maintenance requirements, and measurement methods can change the practical conclusion.

Write a short verification note in your own words. “Care guide requires this washing process; our equipment compatibility is unconfirmed” is more useful than “supplier approved.” The note tells a colleague exactly what has been established and where a further check is necessary.

How do you avoid a confident but unsupported recommendation?

Ask Copilot to separate reported facts, interpretations, and proposed actions. Then challenge the strongest recommendation: what assumption would make it fail? For the cafeteria, the answer might depend on containers returning promptly, a condition that public product documentation cannot prove about your employees.

Treat “not found” carefully. A search that did not locate a safety warning does not establish that a product is safe in every use. A missing internal policy might reflect source access rather than the absence of a policy. Ask the responsible person when the gap could change the decision.

Keep competing explanations visible until someone resolves them. A proposed pilot can be a task, with success criteria and an owner. It becomes an approved direction when a person chooses it. In fenbs, Decisions and rules preserve that human choice separately from the research proposal.

How fenbs helps

Keep the checked evidence behind the recommendation

Save the reviewed source links and the question each one answers in fenbs. Add tasks for missing documents, local checks, and conflicting evidence. A short progress record gives the next session a clear starting point without treating the original Copilot summary as the evidence.

How to do this with fenbs

  1. Create a free account and add a project for the investigation. It is free for one person, with no credit card.
  2. Manually add the checked reference links and concise findings. Keep confidential source files in their approved storage and respect who can open them.
  3. Create tasks for unresolved checks. Record a person’s chosen conclusion in Decisions and rules, with the reason and relevant references.
  4. Save Where we left off with the next action and any question waiting on a person. A supported connected assistant can read that record before continuing.

fenbs does not connect to Microsoft 365 Copilot or automatically import its reports. It fits the ongoing project record; Microsoft remains where you run this research. If your only need is a one-time summary inside Microsoft 365, that extra record may not be necessary.

What should the final research record contain?

Keep the original question, the reviewed sources, a plain-language conclusion, and its limits. State who made any decision and what needs checking before implementation. Someone should be able to follow the references and understand why the evidence mattered without accepting the assistant’s authority.

The AI at work hub has related practical guides. Read Copilot versus ChatGPT for a broader product comparison, or Microsoft Copilot agents for that separate topic. The research habit stays the same: inspect the support for the claim before using the conclusion.

Questions people ask.

Is Researcher required for every research question?

No. A focused question may need only a short exchange and a checked source. A larger investigation benefits from an explicit scope and a report you can review, regardless of the mode used.

Can Copilot access every file my organization owns?

Do not assume so. Available sources depend on the product, account, permissions, and organizational settings. Check what the answer actually cites and identify missing material explicitly.

Should an internal document outweigh a public source?

It depends on the claim. An approved internal policy can establish your organization’s requirements, while an original public study can establish a research finding. Record their different purposes rather than ranking everything by where it is stored.

Does fenbs connect to GitHub Copilot?

GitHub Copilot is among the supported assistant connections. That is separate from Microsoft 365 Copilot, which fenbs does not connect to.
