ChatGPT Study Mode Gone? Find the Missing Controls
ChatGPT Study Mode can disappear because of your plan, your device, the current conversation, or an interface update. These checks will tell you which it is and how to continue studying.

ChatGPT Study Mode is a feature that guides learners through material using questions, explanations, and feedback rather than just giving answers. If it has gone missing from your interface, the most common causes are a plan that does not include it, a device or browser difference, or the feature not being selected at the start of the conversation. Tools like fenbs can help you keep your study goal and the prompt style that worked — so you can continue with another approach while you sort out access.
What Study Mode is and where it lives in the interface
Study Mode in ChatGPT is typically available as a mode selection when you start a new conversation, not as a button inside an existing chat. Look for it in the mode or feature selector — often behind a sparkle, a plus icon, or a dropdown near the message input. If you are in the middle of a long thread, you may not see it there.
The exact location of the control has shifted across ChatGPT interface updates. If it was in a specific place last week and is not there today, OpenAI may have moved it, rolled it behind a plan gate, or temporarily removed it during a redesign.
Check your account and plan
Study Mode may require a specific ChatGPT plan. OpenAI's help center lists which features are included in each plan; check there for the current state. If your plan should include it, confirm you are signed into the right account — a free account and a paid account can look identical in the interface until you check the top-right account badge.
If Study Mode is not included in your current plan, you can achieve a similar effect through a custom prompt in a standard conversation. The approach is less frictionless than a dedicated mode but covers the same learning pattern. See below for how to set that up.
Platform and device differences
Some ChatGPT features appear first on the web app and reach the mobile app later, and some features that are on Android are not yet on iOS or vice versa. If you cannot find Study Mode on your phone, try the same account in a desktop browser. If it appears there, the mobile app may not have the feature yet.
Browser extensions can also suppress controls. Open a private or incognito window with extensions disabled and check whether the mode selector appears. Ad blockers and script blockers are the most common culprits.
Conversation and context requirements
Study Mode is typically selected before a conversation starts, not mid-thread. If you are in an ongoing conversation and cannot find it, start a fresh one and look for the mode selector at the top of the empty message input before you type anything.
Some conversational modes in ChatGPT are also incompatible with each other. If you have a different mode active — such as a custom GPT or another specialized mode — Study Mode may not appear until you return to a default conversation.
What if it was available yesterday but is gone today
If Study Mode was present in your interface recently and has since disappeared, OpenAI may have moved it during a product update, gated it behind an additional plan requirement, or temporarily removed it for changes. Check the ChatGPT release notes or the OpenAI help center for any recent announcements about Study Mode.
Interface controls in ChatGPT can also appear and disappear based on A/B testing. If a colleague on the same plan can see it and you cannot, the difference may be a gradual rollout rather than a plan or region difference. Signing out and back in, or trying a different browser, sometimes resolves this.
Continuing to study when the mode is not available
If Study Mode is unavailable, a well-written prompt in a standard conversation produces a very similar interaction. The key is to ask ChatGPT to teach through questions rather than direct answers:
"I'm studying [topic]. Instead of explaining concepts directly, ask me questions to test my understanding. When I answer incorrectly, explain the right answer and why, then ask another question. Continue until I tell you to stop."
Save this prompt as a reusable template so you are not rewriting it each session. For other tools that support structured studying, see how to use ChatGPT for studying and claude study guide.
Keep your study goal and best prompts ready for the next session
Save the topic you are studying and the prompt style that works best as context notes in fenbs. Where we left off records how far you got in the material, and Skills and prompts stores the tutoring prompt so you do not rewrite it each time. Any connected AI app reads this before the session and picks up where you left off.

How to do this with fenbs
- Create a free account and open a project for your study topic.
- Add a task for the subject or chapter you are working through, with a note on where you stopped.
- Write the tutoring prompt you have found most effective as a Skill in fenbs so you can retrieve it in future sessions.
- Record any concepts you found difficult as open questions so the next session focuses on the gaps.
- At the end of each study session, update Where we left off so you know exactly where to start next time.
fenbs does not import ChatGPT conversations. What you carry over is the study goal, the effective prompt, and the list of gaps — the parts that help the next session start well rather than restart from the beginning.
