ChatGPT Projects Could Not Be Loaded: What to Check
A "could not be loaded" error on ChatGPT Projects usually has a short-term fix. Here is a recovery checklist, what to expect, and how to keep project work safe outside ChatGPT.
Updated 4 min read
When ChatGPT shows "projects could not be loaded" or a similar error, the project data is likely temporarily inaccessible rather than permanently lost. The cause is usually a network issue, a session problem, or a service disruption on OpenAI's side. A tool like fenbs keeps project checkpoints, decisions, and task progress outside ChatGPT so that a load error does not stop the work.
This checklist covers the most common fixes in order of how often they resolve the issue. Work through them before assuming data loss.
Step one: check your connection and the OpenAI status page
A poor or unstable network connection is a frequent cause of load errors. Check that other sites load normally. If the connection is fine, go to the OpenAI status page (status.openai.com) and look for any active incidents that mention Projects or the API. Service disruptions are usually resolved within minutes to a few hours.
If there is an active incident, the best action is to wait and try again later. Refreshing repeatedly during an outage rarely helps and can occasionally make things worse if a partial state is written back.
Step two: refresh and sign out
Do a hard refresh: Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows, Command+Shift+R on Mac. If the error persists, sign out of ChatGPT and sign back in. This clears the session token, which is occasionally the cause of Projects failing to load even when the account and data are intact.
On mobile, force-close the ChatGPT app and reopen it. If the error continues, try uninstalling and reinstalling the app. Your Projects are stored in your account on OpenAI's servers, not on the device, so reinstalling does not delete them.
Step three: try a different browser or device
Open ChatGPT in a different browser, or try a private window to rule out cached data or browser extensions. If Projects load in the new browser, the issue is with the original browser's cache or an installed extension. Clear the site data for ChatGPT in the affected browser, or identify and disable any extensions that modify the page layout.
If Projects load on another device but not the original one, the issue is device-specific. A factory-level reset of the app or browser profile on the original device usually resolves it.
Step four: check network and VPN settings
If you use a VPN, corporate proxy, or restrictive network, ChatGPT's project loading can fail when individual API calls are blocked or routed differently from the main page. Disable your VPN temporarily and test loading Projects on a home or mobile connection. If Projects loads without the VPN, the network configuration is the cause. Contact your IT team to allow the relevant ChatGPT endpoints so the background requests can reach OpenAI.
On a school or workplace network, a content filter may allow the ChatGPT home page but block the background requests that load Projects. This shows up as the main interface loading correctly while a specific panel returns an error. Testing on a different network confirms whether this is the cause.
Step five: contact OpenAI support
If the error persists after 24 hours and none of the above steps resolve it, contact OpenAI support through the help option in your ChatGPT account menu. Describe the error message exactly as it appears, the browser and device you are using, the steps you have already tried, and roughly when the issue started. A time-stamped account of the problem along with your account plan helps the support team investigate more quickly and rule out known issues. Screenshots showing the exact error state are also useful if you can capture them.
What you cannot recover
If Projects load successfully after these steps but some content is missing, check whether a project was deleted. ChatGPT does not have a trash or undo for deleted projects. OpenAI does not offer a way to recover deleted project data through support.
This load error on its own does not delete project data. Your files and conversation history within a project survive a service disruption. The risk of permanent loss comes from manual deletion, not from a load error. For related troubleshooting when Projects are missing entirely from the sidebar, see ChatGPT projects not showing and ChatGPT projects not available.
Keep project checkpoints outside ChatGPT
fenbs stores project goals, active tasks, decisions, and Where we left off outside ChatGPT. If Projects fails to load or data is lost, the project checkpoint in fenbs lets any connected assistant continue from the last known state. Create a free account and save your current project context so a load error does not stop the work.

How to maintain project continuity with fenbs
- Create a free account at fenbs.ai.
- Add your current ChatGPT project as a fenbs project. Write the goal, the tasks in progress, any decisions already made, and the next step.
- Connect ChatGPT from Integrations. This takes a few minutes and uses your existing ChatGPT sign-in.
- At the end of each working session, ask your assistant to save progress to fenbs. This records where things stand for the next session.
- If ChatGPT Projects cannot be loaded, open any supported AI app, connect it to fenbs, and continue from Where we left off.
fenbs does not sync with ChatGPT Projects automatically. It is a separate record you maintain, which is exactly what makes it reliable when ChatGPT itself is unavailable.
