ChatGPT Enterprise Web Search: Check Sources and Save Findings

Check your workspace’s search access, set a clear research boundary, and open the cited sources. Keep reviewed findings and unanswered questions available for the next research session.

ChatGPT Enterprise web search can find public web information and return links to sources when search is available in your workspace. Start by checking access, then define the research question and verify each important claim against the cited page. A citation is a place to check, rather than proof that a conclusion is correct.

For research that continues across chats or teammates, fenbs can keep the question, reviewed links, and unresolved work together. It gives the next session a useful starting point without treating a chat answer as an approved research record.

How do you start a web search in your Enterprise workspace?

  1. Confirm that you are signed in to the intended organization and workspace.
  2. Start a new conversation and look for Search or Web search in the tools menu. You can also try typing a slash to find the available tools.
  3. Select search when available, then ask a narrow question with a date or location if either affects the answer.
  4. Open the cited pages and note any source the assistant could not access.

OpenAI’s Enterprise and Edu search documentation (opens in a new tab) explains that access depends on workspace settings, role permissions where available, usage limits, and restricted-access controls. A prompt cannot override search that an administrator has disabled.

If the option is missing, test a new conversation and confirm your account before contacting your administrator. Provide the exact error and whether it happens on web or in an app. Ask whether the workspace allows live web search and whether your role has access; those questions are more useful than repeatedly rewording the request.

What should you put in the research request?

Specify the decision the research will support. “Research competitors” is difficult to finish or check. “Find the official documentation for exporting these three file formats, and identify what still needs testing” gives both the assistant and the reviewer a concrete boundary.

  • Question: the exact uncertainty you want to resolve.
  • Scope: the products, jurisdiction, audience, and time period that matter.
  • Sources: the official pages or original documents you want prioritized.
  • Output: the facts, links, qualifications, and unanswered questions you need.
  • Exclusions: topics the assistant should leave for a separate research task.

For example, ask for the vendor’s own documentation about an export feature, with one link per finding and a separate list of statements that need a hands-on check. Do not ask for a confident recommendation before the underlying feature claims are established.

Keep confidential names and unnecessary internal details out of public search requests. OpenAI explains on its Enterprise search page that searches may involve disassociated queries and third-party providers. Follow your organization’s approved handling rules before including sensitive material, even when you are using a managed account.

How do you check whether a cited page supports the answer?

Open the original page and find the exact passage behind the claim. Check the product or organization, scope, publication or update date, and any exceptions. A page about one edition of a product may not establish what your organization can use.

OpenAI’s search help page (opens in a new tab) warns that search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect. It explains how to open citations and the Sources list. Use those links to inspect evidence before copying a claim into a team document.

Keep the strength of a finding visible.
FindingWhat to recordNext action
Directly supportedOfficial URL, relevant passage location, scope, and date checked.Use the finding within those boundaries.
Partly supportedWhat the page establishes and what the answer adds.Find another source or narrow the statement.
ContradictedThe conflicting source and the specific disagreement.Correct the research note and revisit the conclusion.
UnresolvedThe question and sources already checked.Assign a follow-up instead of inventing an answer.

Keep your own interpretation separate from the source’s statement. Two sources agreeing on a feature does not automatically establish that it is the best choice for your team. That recommendation needs your criteria, constraints, and usually a practical test.

Store the useful source links with the question they answer in fenbs Links and listings, so the next assistant knows why each source matters.

What if search is blocked or a source cannot be opened?

Record the access problem before trying another research method. Distinguish “search is disabled,” “this page was not retrieved,” and “the page does not support the answer.” They require different next steps, and none means the missing evidence can safely be guessed.

Ask your administrator about the approved alternative when workspace controls block access. If your organization permits it, you may be able to provide an official document directly for review. Identify that document’s date and version, and describe the result as based on the supplied material rather than a fresh web check.

If you need a different research method, the guide to deep research versus web search owns that comparison. For broader team adoption questions, see ChatGPT for business.

How fenbs helps

Keep the evidence behind the answer

Add reviewed source links to the research project in fenbs, with notes explaining what they establish. Create tasks for missing evidence so another assistant can continue the investigation without repeating searches that already failed.

How do you turn the search into a reusable research record?

Finish with a short record of the question, supported findings, limitations, and next action. Include the source URLs and the date you checked them. If a finding is likely to change, name the trigger for reviewing it again, such as a contract renewal or a vendor documentation change.

A person should approve any resulting project decision. Keep “the documentation states this” separate from “our team has decided this.” That distinction stops a tentative search answer from becoming a rule that later assistants follow without review.

A change of assistant should not erase the research criteria; Claude vs ChatGPT covers that separate tool comparison. The evidence record should remain understandable whichever assistant reads it next.

How to keep shared research organized with fenbs

  1. Create a free account and add a project for the research question.
  2. Record the scope, trusted source criteria, and terminology in project notes and the Glossary.
  3. Add reviewed URLs to Links and listings, and create tasks for unresolved questions.
  4. Record the decision a person approves in Decisions and rules, with its limits clearly stated.
  5. Have the connected assistant save Where we left off, including sources checked and the next research action.

fenbs does not enable Enterprise web search or override your organization’s controls. If you need only a one-off answer and no follow-up work, a checked chat may be sufficient. Use a shared record when the research becomes part of ongoing work; the AI at work hub has more workflows for that transition.

Questions people ask.

Does an Enterprise account guarantee that Search will appear?

No. Workspace settings, role permissions, usage limits, and restricted-access controls can affect availability. Ask your administrator to check the configuration that applies to your account.

Is web search the same as searching company files?

No. Public web research and finding information in connected company sources are separate activities. State which kind of evidence you need and check which source each finding actually uses.

Can I rely on an answer because it has citations?

Open the citations and check the original material. Confirm that each page supports the specific claim, applies to your situation, and is current enough for the decision.

Can fenbs automatically verify my research links?

No. Keep the links and reviewed findings in fenbs, and assign verification work to a person or connected assistant. A saved link is a reference, not a guarantee of accuracy.
