Why Does Claude Go Blank? Response and Session Checks
A blank Claude response usually means a stopped generation, a browser or client issue, or a session problem. Here are the checks to run before restarting, and how to preserve your work either way.

Claude going blank — an empty response, a stalled spinner, or a reply that stops mid-sentence — is usually one of a few things: the generation was interrupted, the browser or client encountered a problem, or the session hit a limit. It is almost never permanent, and the fix in most cases takes under two minutes.
Before restarting a conversation, run the checks below. A restart loses the current context, so it is worth a short investigation first. And before you do anything, note where the work stands — a blank response is a good reminder that keeping your progress somewhere outside the chat makes a recovery trivial. fenbs keeps that checkpoint outside any one session.
Check 1: Is Claude actually down?
A blank response sometimes means a service problem on Anthropic's side rather than anything specific to your session. Before troubleshooting your setup, check the Anthropic status page or is Claude down to see if there is a known outage or degraded performance.
If there is an active incident, the fix is to wait. Opening a new conversation or switching browsers will not help if the underlying service is unavailable. The status page usually gives a rough estimate of when service will resume.
Check 2: Did the generation stop before finishing?
Claude sometimes stops generating before it reaches the end of a long response. This can look like a blank reply if the content was only just beginning, or like a truncated one if it had started. This is not a bug — very long responses can hit a generation limit.
If the response appears to have stopped early, type "continue" in the next message. Claude will pick up from where it stopped. If you asked for a very long piece of work in one prompt, break it into smaller steps: ask for the outline first, then ask it to write each section individually.
Check 3: Browser and client problems
A blank response in the Claude web app is sometimes a browser rendering problem rather than a server one. The text was generated but the page did not display it. Try these steps in order.
- Scroll up and down on the page — the response may have rendered in an unexpected position.
- Hard-refresh the page (Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows and Linux, Cmd+Shift+R on Mac). This reloads assets without clearing the session.
- Open the browser's developer console (F12) and look for errors in the Console tab. A JavaScript error can prevent the response from rendering.
- Try a different browser or an incognito window. An extension may be interfering with the page.
- Clear the browser cache for claude.ai specifically, then reload.
For Claude Code in the terminal, a blank or stalled response is often a network timeout. Check your internet connection and try the command again. If Claude Code appears to hang, you can interrupt it with Ctrl+C and then restart the command.
Check 4: Context length and session limits
Every Claude session has a context window — the total amount of text it can hold at once, including the full conversation so far. In a very long conversation, Claude can approach that limit and begin to behave unpredictably, including producing shorter or incomplete responses.
If your conversation has grown very long, start a fresh one and paste in the current summary of what matters — the decisions made, the task at hand and the context it needs. A short, specific context in a new conversation produces better output than a full history in an overloaded one.
This is a good time to review whether everything in the conversation is still needed. Conversations that accumulate many instructions, edits and examples fill the context window faster. Starting fresh every few sessions keeps response quality more consistent. A new conversation also avoids the risk of Claude applying a correction from one task to a different one later in the same long session.
Save your checkpoint before restarting
If none of the above resolves the blank response and you need to start a new conversation, save the current state of the work first. Write down what was completed, what was in progress, what decision was being made and what the next step is. Even a short plain-text note prevents the restart from becoming a full rebuild.
This is the habit that makes a blank response a minor interruption rather than a lost hour. A well-kept checkpoint means the new conversation picks up in minutes rather than spending fifteen minutes reconstructing context.
Keep the work checkpoint outside the chat
fenbs keeps Where we left off, current tasks and decisions outside any session. If Claude goes blank and you need a new conversation, ask the next session to read your fenbs context — it picks up from the saved checkpoint without rebuilding context from scratch. Save progress before any session ends.

How to do this with fenbs
- Create a free account at fenbs.ai and add your project. Describe the current goal and tasks.
- Connect Claude at /integrations and ask it to read the project context at the start of each session.
- Before each session ends — especially before a long generation — ask Claude to save progress: what was completed, what remains, and the next step.
- If Claude goes blank mid-session, check the Anthropic status page first. If no outage, try a hard refresh. If you need a new conversation, open it and ask Claude to read the fenbs context immediately.
- After recovering, ask Claude to update Where we left off in fenbs to reflect the current state.
