Why Does ChatGPT Say Conversation Not Found?
The "conversation not found" error in ChatGPT usually means the chat was deleted, the link is wrong, or an account mismatch is blocking access. Here is how to understand what happened and continue your work.

When ChatGPT says "conversation not found," it means the specific chat is no longer accessible in your current session. The most common causes are that the conversation was deleted, the shared link has expired, you are signed in to the wrong account, or a temporary server issue is making it unavailable. Tools like fenbs let you save the decisions, next steps, and task progress from any conversation, so a missing chat does not mean losing the work that came out of it.
ChatGPT does not offer a recovery path for deleted conversations. Understanding the cause helps you know what to do next.
The conversation was deleted
If you or someone with access to the account deleted the conversation, it is permanently gone. ChatGPT does not have a trash folder or an undo option for deleted chats. Deletion is the most common reason for this error when no link sharing is involved.
If you use ChatGPT on shared devices, another person may have deleted the conversation while managing their own chat history. Check whether you are still signed in to the right account before assuming the worst.
A wrong or expired shared link
ChatGPT allows you to share a conversation with anyone who has the link. If the person who shared the link has since deleted the conversation or revoked the share, the link will show "conversation not found" to anyone trying to open it. There is no way to recover access once a share is revoked.
If you are trying to open a shared link, check with the person who sent it. They may be able to re-share it if the conversation still exists in their account. If they deleted it, the content is no longer recoverable through that link.
Account and workspace mismatch
ChatGPT conversations belong to the account that created them. If you have more than one ChatGPT account, a conversation from one account is not visible in another. Sign out and sign in to the account you used when the conversation was created. The account switcher is usually in the bottom-left corner of the sidebar.
If you use ChatGPT through a workplace or school account, conversations created in that workspace are stored under that account. Opening a bookmark or link from a personal browser session that is signed in to a different account will show this error. Try the link while signed in to the workspace account.
Temporary server or sync issues
Occasionally a conversation shows as "not found" because of a short-lived server issue or a sync delay after sign-in. Wait a minute and refresh the page. If your chat history has not fully loaded, the conversation may reappear once the sync completes. If the issue affects many conversations or persists for more than a few minutes, check the OpenAI status page for ongoing incidents.
Recovery limits: what ChatGPT cannot restore
OpenAI does not offer a way to recover deleted conversations through support requests or account settings. If the conversation is gone, the text is gone. The one exception is conversations that appear missing due to a temporary issue: those typically come back on their own or after a sign-out and sign-in.
This is why saving key outputs outside ChatGPT matters. A decision made in a chat, a draft approved in a conversation, or a set of instructions agreed on in a session are all at risk if the only record is in ChatGPT's history. Export your chat history before it is gone
ChatGPT offers a data export option in account settings under Data Controls. Requesting an export sends a ZIP file to your registered email containing all your conversations in JSON and HTML format. This is not a live backup, but it gives you a readable copy of every conversation in your account up to the export date. The request takes a few hours to process.
If there is a specific conversation you want to preserve, copy the key text directly now rather than waiting. Once a conversation is deleted, the export option does not recover it, because the export reflects only what is currently in your account. For conversations that contain decisions, approved content, or task instructions you will need again, copying the essentials to a note or task tracker is the only reliable method.
Save the work that came out of the conversation
fenbs keeps what matters from a session: the decisions made, the tasks agreed, the next step, and any lessons worth keeping. If a ChatGPT conversation disappears, your work record in fenbs stays intact. A connected assistant in any supported app reads it and can continue from there. Create a free account and start saving after your next session.

How to protect work from lost conversations with fenbs
- Create a free account at fenbs.ai.
- After any significant ChatGPT session, add the key outputs to fenbs: the decisions made, the tasks in progress, and where things stand.
- Write any rules or standing instructions in Decisions and rules so they apply to every future session, not just the one where they were first set.
- Connect ChatGPT from Integrations. Your assistant reads the work context from fenbs at the start of each session.
- Ask the assistant to save progress at the end of each session. The next assistant, in any connected app, can continue from Where we left off.
fenbs does not read your ChatGPT conversation history and does not recover deleted chats. It gives you a separate place to record the conclusions that are worth keeping.
