Why Does ChatGPT Keep Freezing? Checks for Stuck Chats

ChatGPT can freeze for several reasons, from browser issues to server load to prompts that produce very long responses. Here is how to diagnose and fix the most common causes.

Updated 4 min read

ChatGPT freezes most often due to a stalled network connection, a browser or extension conflict, or a response that is taking too long to generate. In a small number of cases the cause is an OpenAI server issue. You can usually identify which one is responsible within a minute and fix it without losing work — if you have a saved record of the task somewhere outside the chat.

When a chat freezes mid-task, the context you built up in that conversation is often gone. fenbs keeps a checkpoint of your task — what was done, what remains, the important decisions — so you can start a fresh chat in any connected AI app and continue from a known state instead of repeating the whole setup.

Check whether the problem is ChatGPT or your setup

Before troubleshooting your browser, check whether ChatGPT is experiencing a service issue. OpenAI's status page (opens in a new tab) shows current incidents and degraded performance. If there is an active incident, nothing on your end will fix it — wait and try again.

If the status page shows all systems operational, the problem is most likely local. Try opening ChatGPT in a different browser tab or a different browser entirely. If it works there, your original tab, an extension, or a cached resource is the cause.

The most common causes and how to fix them

  1. Stale browser tab. Refresh the page (F5 or Ctrl + R). If a response was mid-generation, it may restart. If the page does not load, check your internet connection.
  2. Browser extensions blocking scripts. Disable your ad blocker, privacy extension, or VPN temporarily and reload. These commonly interfere with ChatGPT's real-time response stream.
  3. Corrupted cache or cookies. Clear your browser cache and cookies for chat.openai.com, then reload. In Chrome, open Settings > Privacy and security > Clear browsing data.
  4. Very long or complex response in progress. Long code generation or detailed analysis can take a minute to stream. Wait thirty seconds before concluding it has frozen.
  5. Conversation context too large. Very long conversations build up a large context that slows generation. Start a new chat and paste in only the relevant background.
  6. Network interruption. Check that your connection is stable. A brief drop mid-response causes the stream to stall. Refreshing the page typically restarts it.

When the response is lost and how to recover

If you refresh a frozen page, ChatGPT often resumes the response from where it stopped, or shows the partial text it generated. In some cases the response is lost entirely. ChatGPT does not save drafts of responses that were mid-generation when the connection broke.

If the conversation history is visible but the last response is missing, you can click "Regenerate" to request the same answer again. If the whole conversation is unavailable, check ChatGPT's left sidebar for recent chats — the session is usually still there.

Preventing freezes in long working sessions

Long conversations with complex context are more likely to produce slow or frozen responses. Breaking your work into shorter, focused chats is both more reliable and easier to manage. Start each new chat with a brief summary of the relevant context rather than running one very long conversation.

If you are generating large code blocks or detailed tables, ask ChatGPT to produce them one section at a time rather than everything at once. Smaller outputs stream faster and are less likely to stall mid-response.

Switching to a faster model — for example GPT-4o mini rather than GPT-4o — can also reduce freezing when the standard model is under heavy load. Faster models produce output more quickly and are less prone to stalling on long responses. The trade-off is that they may be less capable at complex tasks.

For work that spans multiple sessions or uses more than one AI app, see ChatGPT alternatives and Claude vs ChatGPT. If you find a different AI app more reliable for a particular task, switching is easier when the important context lives outside both apps.

How fenbs helps

Continue from a saved checkpoint when the chat freezes

fenbs keeps Where we left off for each project and task. Before a long session, save what is done, what is in progress, and the key decisions. If ChatGPT freezes and the chat is lost, open a new conversation in any connected AI app and ask it to read the project context — it starts from your last checkpoint instead of from nothing.

How to do this with fenbs

  1. Create a free account and add a project for the work you are doing in ChatGPT.
  2. At the start of a work session, connect ChatGPT to fenbs from Integrations and ask it to read the project context and Where we left off.
  3. At natural break points during a session, ask ChatGPT to summarize what it has completed and save it as a task update in fenbs.
  4. If the chat freezes and you lose the session, open a new chat, connect to fenbs, and ask it to read the project context. It will continue from the last saved state.
  5. Keep task notes factual: what was done, what was tested, what remains. Avoid vague notes — they do not help the next session start useful work.

fenbs does not automatically recover ChatGPT chat history. The checkpoint is only as good as what you saved before the freeze. Save progress regularly — not just at the end of a session — so any freeze leaves you close to where you were. For related guides, see the AI at work section.

Questions people ask.

Why does ChatGPT keep freezing mid-response?

The most common causes are a network interruption that breaks the response stream, a browser extension interfering with the page, or a very long response that takes more time than usual. Check the OpenAI status page first, then try refreshing or switching browsers.

Is ChatGPT down right now?

Check status.openai.com for live information on service disruptions. If the status page shows a current incident, the freeze is on OpenAI's side and will resolve when the incident is cleared.

How do I unfreeze ChatGPT without losing my conversation?

Refresh the page. ChatGPT usually resumes or shows the partial response. If the page does not load, check your internet connection. If the response is gone, use the Regenerate button in the conversation to request it again.

Why does ChatGPT freeze on long conversations?

Longer conversations accumulate more context for the model to process, which slows response generation. Start a new chat and provide a brief summary of the relevant background rather than continuing a very long single conversation.

Does clearing browser cache fix ChatGPT freezing?

Sometimes, when a corrupted cached resource is the cause. Clear the cache and cookies for chat.openai.com in your browser settings, then reload. If the issue is a browser extension, disabling extensions one at a time will identify the one causing the problem.
