Todoist AI Assistant: Turn Suggestions Into Useful Tasks

Use Todoist’s Task Assist to suggest and improve tasks, then check the work before adding it. Keep the project decisions that explain why each action matters.

Updated 5 min read

Use a Todoist AI assistant to suggest tasks, clarify an unclear action, or break larger work into smaller steps. Todoist currently calls its task-help extension Task Assist. Give it a concrete goal, review the suggestions, and add only actions you intend to do; a generated list is a proposal rather than an agreed plan.

Tools like fenbs separately keep the project context and decisions behind those actions for compatible AI assistants. fenbs does not connect to Todoist or synchronize its tasks, so choose deliberately where you maintain the authoritative task record.

How do you get from a goal to reviewed tasks?

  1. Write the outcome you want, the starting point, and the constraints you already know.
  2. Open the project’s three-dot menu, select Suggest tasks with Task Assist, and enter the goal you want help breaking down.
  3. Review the proposed tasks against the actual project. Remove duplicates, unsupported assumptions, and work outside the agreed scope.
  4. Rewrite each remaining action so you can tell what finished means. Check ownership and dates separately.
  5. Add the actions you accept and keep the decisions behind them available for future planning.

Follow Todoist’s Task Assist setup instructions (opens in a new tab) for availability and installation. The guide directs you to Settings, Integrations, Browse, and Task Assist, then Add and Confirm. It lists web and desktop support and says this extension is not available in the iOS or Android apps.

Todoist also documents other AI features and assistant connections on its AI tools page (opens in a new tab). Those are separate capabilities: a connection to an external assistant is not the same thing as the Task Assist extension. Check the instructions for the feature you intend to use.

What should you tell the assistant about your goal?

Describe an observable result rather than a category of work. Improve the website could mean rewriting copy, fixing checkout, or changing a logo. Prepare the revised contact page for client review is narrower, especially if you say the copy exists and the mobile layout still needs checking.

A focused starting point

Prepare the revised contact page for client review. The approved copy is ready, the phone field must be removed, and we still need to check the mobile layout. Suggest practical next actions. Do not add a redesign, invent a launch date, or assume the client has approved the finished page.

Keep the first request small enough to evaluate. If you do not know whether the form sends messages successfully, say that the delivery check is outstanding. The assistant can suggest a check, but it cannot turn missing evidence into a completed result.

This is the context problem described in what an AI brain keeps. A short record of the agreed facts helps each new planning session start from the real project instead of a generic version of it.

How do you judge the suggested actions?

Read every suggestion as if a colleague had proposed it. Ask whether it advances the goal, whether it is already done, and whether someone has authority to do it. A long list is not necessarily a complete or useful plan; extra steps can obscure the few actions that matter.

Questions that turn a suggestion into a usable action
CheckWhat to look for
ScopeThe action serves the agreed outcome without adding unrelated work.
ClarityThe title names an action and an object, with a visible completion condition.
EvidenceThe action does not assume approval, access, or a test result you do not have.
OwnershipThe person expected to do it has accepted the responsibility.
TimingA date reflects a real agreement or deliberate scheduling choice.

For example, replace finalize website with remove the phone field from the contact form. Add a note that the client approved removing that field. Then make verifying message delivery a separate check if it has a separate result. This keeps a successful edit from being confused with a successful end-to-end form test.

The AI agent approval workflow is useful when an assistant can also change the task list. Approving a suggested plan should not silently authorize unrelated edits, messages, or commitments.

When should you clarify a task or break it down?

Clarify a task when the next action is unclear. Break it down when several distinct actions or checks are hidden inside it. Do neither merely to make the list longer: a straightforward action can remain one task when its scope and completion are obvious.

The Task Assist feature page (opens in a new tab) describes help with clearer actions, smaller steps, and getting started. Use those controls to generate possibilities, then make your own judgment about which ones belong in the project. Do not assume the extension knows your client’s requirements or your team’s latest decisions.

If a suggestion says obtain stakeholder approval, name the person and the thing they must approve in your own working note. If the owner is unknown, preserve that uncertainty. Assigning the task to the most convenient teammate does not resolve who actually has approval authority.

Keep reusable project facts in a maintained record. fenbs project context can give connected assistants the decisions and current progress behind planning work, while Todoist remains the place you manage a personal action list if that suits you.

How fenbs helps

Keep the reason behind the task list

Create the project in fenbs and save the goal, constraints, and reviewed decisions that explain the work. Ask a connected assistant to read that context before proposing the next steps. Start with the facts you would otherwise repeat each time you revisit the plan.

How do you avoid keeping two conflicting plans?

Choose a home for task status and use the other record for a distinct purpose. For example, Todoist can hold your personal next actions while fenbs holds the shared project decisions and session progress. If the same action appears in both places, identify which one is authoritative and update the other deliberately.

Review the list after the work changes. A client approval can remove a blocker; a failed check can create a new action. Mark what actually happened rather than repeatedly asking AI to regenerate the entire plan. Otherwise, finished tasks can reappear and canceled suggestions can quietly return.

Our personal AI assistant guide covers the broader role of help with daily work. The AI at work collection covers other applications; keep this setup focused on making Todoist suggestions usable.

How to do this with fenbs

  1. Create a free account, free for one person with no credit card, and add the project whose tasks need better context.
  2. Save the goal and current constraints as project context. Record actual choices a person made in Decisions and rules.
  3. Connect a supported assistant and ask it to read the project context before helping you review next actions. Tell it where task status is maintained.
  4. Save the reviewed outcome and Where we left off before stopping, including unfinished checks and decisions still waiting on a person.

fenbs is not the right fit if your only problem is renaming a few personal tasks. Use it when the reasoning and progress need to stay available across assistant sessions; it does not automatically move Todoist data into a shared AI brain.

Questions people ask.

Why can’t I find Task Assist on my phone?

Todoist’s current Task Assist guide lists web and desktop support and says the extension is not available in its iOS or Android apps. Other Todoist AI features can have different availability.

Is Todoist Assist the same as Task Assist?

Todoist Assist describes the broader collection of AI features. Task Assist is the extension for suggestions and task help. Use the instructions for the specific feature you want.

Should I accept every generated subtask?

No. Remove actions outside the goal, rewrite vague steps, and check for work already completed. Add the actions you intend to maintain.

Can task suggestions set my real deadlines?

A suggestion is not evidence of a deadline. Confirm external commitments and choose internal work dates deliberately before treating them as part of the plan.
