Slack AI Assistant: Summaries, Answers, and Work Handoffs
Use Slack’s built-in AI and approved chatbots to catch up on conversations. Check the source messages, then preserve the decisions and actions people confirmed.

A Slack AI assistant can help you catch up on conversations, find answers, and prepare follow-up work. Start with the native AI features your workspace makes available, verify the messages behind the result, and confirm decisions with the people responsible. Add a connected chatbot only when it solves a separate, specific need.
Tools like fenbs keep confirmed decisions and next steps outside a passing conversation. fenbs does not connect to Slack or import its messages; you record the relevant work separately after review.
How do you use AI to catch up on one conversation?
- Choose one project channel or thread and the period you need to understand. Start with a bounded question, such as what changed in the review discussion.
- Use the available summary control and open its source messages before relying on a deadline, assignment, or approval.
- List confirmed actions separately from suggestions and unresolved questions.
- Ask the relevant person to clarify anything that would change what someone does next.
- Save the confirmed outcome and next step in the project’s work record.
Slack’s guide to its AI features (opens in a new tab) documents conversation summaries, search answers, and Slackbot. Access varies by plan, role, and administrator settings, so use that guide to check your workspace rather than assume every control will appear. On desktop, channel and direct-message summaries are available through the conversation menu; a thread has its own Summarize control.
This is one communication workflow in the AI at work collection. For commitments arriving through email, use the separate Outlook assistant workflow.
How do you tell a useful answer from a plausible one?
Ask for a specific fact in a defined context. What did the launch team agree about the signup form is a better working question than what is happening with launch. Add the project name and approximate period if several conversations use the same language.
Read the message containing the answer and the replies around it. Someone may have proposed removing a field, received objections, and later withdrawn the idea. A sentence can appear in search and still be the wrong current instruction.
- Check the speaker: did the person have authority to approve the change?
- Check the time: was a later message or decision more current?
- Check the scope: did the answer concern the public site, an internal test, or a different client?
- Check the outcome: was the change agreed, merely suggested, or still waiting for a response?
An answer limited to information you can access is not proof that the whole company has no other relevant information. Avoid turning absence into certainty. Write that you found no confirmation in the conversation you checked, then ask the owner if approval matters.
When should you use a connected Slack chatbot?
Consider a connected chatbot when your team needs a particular assistant inside the conversation, or a specific app’s supported actions. State the job before installing it: answer questions about an approved knowledge source, for example, or draft a response for a person to review. A bot’s presence in a channel does not define what it can read or change.
Review the app publisher and requested permissions with your workspace’s owner. Slack explains how permissions describe an app’s information access and possible actions in Understand app permissions (opens in a new tab). Its security recommendations for app approval (opens in a new tab) provide the administrator’s starting point.
Keep the first trial in a small, appropriate channel with ordinary work information. Test whether the bot answers the intended question, identifies uncertainty, and respects your review process. Ask how access is removed when the trial ends, and avoid installing overlapping bots simply because their descriptions sound useful.
Our AI agent approval workflow explains the distinction between preparing an action and authorizing it. A suggestion in Slack should not become permission to send an external message or change a customer commitment.
What belongs in a handoff after the discussion?
Save the answer that changes the next action. Say a design team discusses a signup form: the client confirms removing the phone field, the developer agrees to make the change, and someone still needs to check mobile spacing. Those are a decision, an accepted action, and an unfinished check. They should remain distinct in the handoff.
| In the conversation | In the work record |
|---|---|
| A person confirms removing the phone field. | A decision with the person, scope, reason, and source reference. |
| A developer agrees to update the form. | A task or task update describing the accepted work. |
| Mobile spacing still needs checking. | An unfinished check and the next place to start. |
| Someone suggests redesigning the entire page. | An open proposal, unless a person actually approves it. |
Include a source link when the future reader is allowed to open it, but make the note understandable on its own. A link labeled discussion does not tell another assistant what was decided. Equally, avoid copying private messages into a broader team workspace just to provide extra context.
A precise note gives the next session a starting point. fenbs handoffs keep that reviewed progress beside tasks and decisions for supported assistants.
Carry the agreed work beyond the thread
In fenbs, record the person’s confirmed decision, update the affected task, and save what remains in Where we left off. A connected assistant can read that project context before its next session. Start with one discussion whose outcome would otherwise need explaining again.

How do you keep summaries from becoming new rules?
Label a draft summary as a draft until someone has checked it. When a choice is confirmed, record the actual person’s choice and its scope. A one-time exception for a client should not turn into a standing instruction for every future project.
Update the work record when a later conversation changes the answer. Preserve enough reasoning to explain the replacement, rather than silently editing away the old position. An AI brain is useful when it gives the next assistant the current work context, including what remains unsettled.
Do a simple handoff check: can someone who missed the discussion explain what was agreed and what to do next? If they need to read the entire thread, tighten the note. If they misunderstand the approval, correct the record before using it to guide more work.
How to do this with fenbs
- Create a free account, free for one person with no credit card, and add the project discussed in Slack.
- Record the confirmed action as a task or update an existing one. Keep its source reference and outstanding checks together.
- Add the decision a person made in Decisions and rules. Keep an unanswered proposal open, and use a rule only for an instruction that continues to apply.
- Connect a supported assistant and ask it to read the project context before working. Save task progress and Where we left off before ending the session.
fenbs is not the right fit if you only need a quick summary inside Slack. Use it when reviewed outcomes must guide work across AI apps; it does not supply a Slack chatbot or automatic message synchronization.
