Perplexity vs. ChatGPT: Research and Everyday Work
Perplexity is built for cited, current-web research. ChatGPT is built for broad conversation, reasoning and task completion. Here is how to choose between them — and when you might use both.
Updated 5 min read
Perplexity and ChatGPT are both AI assistants, but they are designed for different primary tasks. Perplexity is built around real-time web search with inline citations — it is optimized for finding current information and showing you where it came from. ChatGPT is a broader conversational assistant, strong at reasoning, writing, coding and sustained conversation across a wide range of topics.
Many people use both: Perplexity to find and verify a current source, ChatGPT to reason through what to do with it. When work spans multiple tools and sessions, keeping the project context and verified sources in one place outside any single app becomes valuable. Tools like fenbs keep that record for the assistants that connect to it. Note that fenbs does not currently connect to Perplexity; it connects to ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor and other supported apps listed on Integrations.
What each tool is built for
Perplexity starts every response with a web search. It retrieves current pages, synthesizes a response and shows you the sources inline — numbered references you can click. This makes it particularly good for factual questions about current events, products, regulations or any topic where the answer may have changed recently.
ChatGPT is primarily a conversational reasoning tool. It can access the web in some modes, but its strongest capability is reasoning through complex problems, writing in a specific style, handling multi-step tasks and carrying a longer conversation without losing the thread. It excels at tasks where the output is a piece of work — a draft, a plan, an analysis — rather than a factual lookup.
Perplexity vs. ChatGPT: a direct comparison
| Aspect | Perplexity | ChatGPT |
|---|---|---|
| Primary strength | Finding and synthesizing current web sources with inline citations. | Broad reasoning, writing, coding and multi-step task completion. |
| Source handling | Shows numbered citations inline; sources are real-time web pages. | Cites sources when web search is enabled; works from training data when it is not. |
| Freshness | Real-time web access by default. | Training cutoff applies without web search; web search is available in some modes and plans. |
| Reasoning depth | Suited for synthesis and summary; less optimized for extended multi-step reasoning. | Stronger at complex reasoning, problem-solving and tasks with many dependencies. |
| Writing and drafting | Can draft, but primarily research-focused. | Strong across most writing styles, lengths and purposes. |
| Work context | No persistent memory of your projects or decisions across sessions. | Memory and Projects features available in ChatGPT; not portable to other apps. |
Which fits research tasks better
For finding current information — a recent regulation, the current status of a product, what a company announced last month — Perplexity is the stronger starting point. Its citations are visible, which makes the verification step faster: you can open each source directly rather than asking "where did you get this?"
The caution with Perplexity is that showing sources is not the same as citing them accurately. The model can still misread a page or draw a conclusion the original source does not support. Open the linked pages for anything you will act on. How to use AI at work covers checking AI research outputs in more depth.
ChatGPT with web search enabled can perform a similar function. The experience differs: Perplexity is more focused on research as the primary task; ChatGPT's web search is one feature among many. Depending on your workflow, either can work. Some people prefer Perplexity for research and save ChatGPT for the work that follows.
Which fits writing and everyday work better
For writing, drafting, editing and most everyday workplace tasks, ChatGPT is the stronger choice. Its reasoning across a conversation, its ability to maintain instructions over a long session and its broad range of task types make it more flexible for output-oriented work.
ChatGPT's Projects feature lets you keep instructions and files attached to a set of conversations, making it useful for ongoing work like a client account or a long writing project. Work context and what carries over between sessions
Neither Perplexity nor ChatGPT preserves your project context in a form that travels to another app. Perplexity has no persistent memory of your projects. ChatGPT's memory and Projects are specific to ChatGPT and do not sync to Perplexity, Claude, Cursor or any other tool.
For work that spans multiple sessions or multiple tools, this means you re-explain the project every time you switch. The practical solution is a record outside both apps: the project goal, current tasks, verified sources and key decisions in a place that any connected assistant can read. This is how the research from Perplexity on Monday can inform the draft in ChatGPT on Tuesday without requiring you to paste everything manually.
Move between Perplexity and ChatGPT without losing the work
Save the project brief, verified sources and open questions in fenbs before switching tools. The next connected assistant reads them at the start of the session. fenbs does not connect to Perplexity, but it connects to ChatGPT, Claude and other supported tools. How to do this with fenbs
- Create a free account. Free for one person; no credit card needed.
- Add a project for the research or ongoing work. Write the goal, the constraints and any sources the AI should know about before starting.
- As you verify sources in Perplexity, add them to the Links section of the relevant task in fenbs.
- Connect ChatGPT or another supported assistant from Integrations. Use developer mode in ChatGPT; check OpenAI's current help pages for plan requirements.
- Ask the connected assistant to read project context before working. At the end of the session, ask it to save progress and any new decisions.
When fenbs does not connect to a tool you use, you can still keep the project record there and paste the relevant context into a new session. The verification and decision record is useful even if the connection is manual.
