OpenAI Alternatives: Choose Models That Fit Your Work
Exploring alternatives to OpenAI? This guide compares the main options by task type, organizational controls and portability, so you can choose with confidence and keep your project context wherever you land.
Updated 5 min read
The best OpenAI alternative depends on what part of OpenAI you are replacing. ChatGPT the app, the OpenAI API, and the underlying models are three different things — and the alternatives differ for each. Claude, Gemini, Mistral and open-weight models all cover parts of what OpenAI offers.
Whatever you move to, the hardest thing to carry is the project context you built: decisions, rules, task state and where work stands. Tools like fenbs keep that record outside any one provider, so switching does not mean rebuilding your setup from memory.
What you are replacing when you leave OpenAI
OpenAI offers ChatGPT (the consumer and business app), the OpenAI API (for building apps), and specific models such as GPT-4o, o3 and o4-mini. These are separate products. Leaving ChatGPT the app does not require leaving the API, and vice versa.
- Replacing ChatGPT the app: any general-purpose AI assistant with a web interface or mobile app — Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot.
- Replacing the OpenAI API: Anthropic's API (Claude models), Google's Gemini API, Mistral's API, or open-weight models hosted on Groq, Together AI or your own infrastructure.
- Replacing GPT-4o specifically: depends on the task — Claude Sonnet or Opus for writing and analysis, Gemini for multimodal work, o1 or o3 alternatives from Anthropic's extended-thinking models.
Comparing the main alternatives
| Alternative | Replaces | Main considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Claude (Anthropic) | ChatGPT app and OpenAI API | Strong for long documents, nuanced writing and careful reasoning. Available as claude.ai and via the Anthropic API. |
| Gemini (Google) | ChatGPT app and Gemini API | Integrates with Google Workspace; large context window; multimodal. Gemini CLI connects to MCP tools. |
| Mistral (Le Chat and API) | ChatGPT app and OpenAI API | European-hosted; strong multilingual and coding performance; open-weight models available for self-hosting. |
| Llama (Meta, self-hosted) | OpenAI API | No per-token cost after setup; data stays on your infrastructure; requires engineering to deploy and maintain. |
| Microsoft Copilot | ChatGPT app (Microsoft 365 users) | Built into Microsoft 365; depends on your license for which features are included. |
| Perplexity | ChatGPT app for research | Web-search-first with cited sources; strong for questions needing current information. |
| fenbs | Project memory across providers | Keeps decisions, tasks and Where we left off outside any one provider. Connects to Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini CLI, Cursor and others over MCP. |
Free alternatives to OpenAI
Claude, Gemini and Perplexity all offer free tiers with usage limits. The free model is usually less capable than the paid version, but often enough for everyday tasks. Mistral's Le Chat has a free plan. Open-weight models from Meta (Llama) and Mistral are free to run if you have the infrastructure.
Check the vendor's current pricing page before relying on a free limit for professional work. Plans change regularly. fenbs is free for one person, no credit card needed.
Alternatives for API developers
If you build on the OpenAI API, the practical alternatives are Anthropic's API, Google's Gemini API, and Mistral's API. All three offer REST endpoints, SDKs and similar token-based pricing. The main differences are model capability on your specific tasks, rate limits, latency, and the trust and compliance posture each company offers.
Self-hosting an open-weight model (Llama, Mistral, Qwen) eliminates per-token cost and keeps data on your own servers. The tradeoff is engineering overhead: you handle deployment, scaling, updates and prompt engineering without the vendor's infrastructure team behind it.
Keep project context when you change providers
fenbs stores your projects, tasks, decisions and rules outside any one AI provider. When you move from OpenAI to another API or app, connect the new tool to fenbs and ask it to read the project context. The same decisions and Where we left off are there for Claude, Gemini CLI, Cursor and every other supported app.

Organizational controls and data handling
A reason some organizations move away from OpenAI is data handling. OpenAI offers enterprise agreements with data processing terms, but teams in regulated industries sometimes prefer a European provider (Mistral is French) or a self-hosted model where data never leaves their own servers.
Before moving for compliance reasons, check the vendor's current terms for your region. The relevant questions are where your data is processed, whether it is used for training, and what audit and deletion rights you have. Each vendor's trust and security page is the right primary source.
What you lose and how to carry it
OpenAI's ChatGPT stores memory, Projects with custom instructions, and conversation history inside the app. Claude keeps its own Projects. Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) keeps research collections. None of those records travel automatically when you switch.
Memory tools for personal notes (such as those compared in the mem0 alternatives and Supermemory alternatives guides) solve the personal-context problem. For team project work — tasks, decisions, shared rules — use a tool that every connected AI app can read.
How to do this with fenbs
- Create a free account. Your personal board is ready immediately.
- Add the project you are moving. Write the goal, the current tasks, and the rules or decisions that should apply.
- Open /integrations and connect your new AI app. The guide for each app covers the MCP setup and the browser sign-in.
- Ask the assistant to read the project context before it starts any work. Check that it can describe the current task and the rules.
- Before ending the session, ask the assistant to save its progress so the next session starts with a current record.
