Notion vs Obsidian for Students Who Use AI to Study
Choose Notion for organizing courses and sharing study work, or Obsidian for a personal collection of connected notes. Keep sources and AI study instructions clear whichever you choose.

Notion is the better starting point if your main problem is organizing courses, assignments, and shared study pages. Obsidian is the better starting point if you want a personal collection of connected notes stored as files you control. For AI-assisted study, fenbs can keep a selected project brief and checked reference links outside either notes app, so your next assistant starts with the same instructions.
The choice depends on what you do after a lecture. Do you need to coordinate a group presentation, or connect a new concept to ideas from last semester? Both jobs matter, but they reward different habits. This comparison focuses on student work; our second-brain guides cover the wider practice of keeping useful knowledge.
Which app fits your main study problem?
| Tool | Better fit for | What still needs attention |
|---|---|---|
| Notion | Course pages, assignment records, and notes you invite classmates to read or edit. | Keep the setup small and separate your notes from the original evidence. |
| Obsidian | Personal notes connected across classes in a local folder of Markdown files. | Decide how you will back up files and give collaborators the material they need. |
| fenbs | A study-project brief, checked source links, rules, and next steps for connected AI apps. | Keep lecture notes and long reading archives in your notes app; fenbs does not import them automatically. |
The underlying distinction is concrete: Notion databases (opens in a new tab) organize pages with properties and different views, while Obsidian stores notes (opens in a new tab) as Markdown text files in a local folder called a vault. Markdown is plain text with simple formatting marks. Neither structure tells you whether a claim in your notes is true.
Treat the table as a starting recommendation, not a ranking of intelligence or academic seriousness. A plain course page you review regularly beats an elaborate system you avoid. Before choosing, name the thing you lose most often: deadlines, arguments, original passages, shared changes, or the instructions you keep repeating to an assistant.
How should you organize courses and assignments?
In Notion, start with a course page and a small assignment database. Useful fields are course, due date, current stage, and a link to the assignment instructions. Put the actual reading notes inside the relevant page instead of building a separate dashboard for every kind of work. Those are suggested choices for your setup, not requirements of the app.
In Obsidian, start with a note for each course and links to lecture notes, readings, and open questions. Give notes informative titles such as “Why sampling changes an estimate” rather than names that mean nothing outside the week you wrote them. A course index can point to both the assignment and the ideas it uses.
- Keep one trusted place for the due date. A copied deadline becomes a second date you must remember to update.
- Write a next action that takes a sitting: find the original table, revise the claim, or practice the explanation aloud.
- Separate a lecture summary from an assignment response. One captures what was taught; the other needs to answer a specific question.
- Keep the instructor’s instructions recognizable. Mark your interpretation as your interpretation instead of blending the two.
If course planning is your sticking point, the Notion to-do list guide goes deeper into organizing next actions. Avoid redesigning the whole semester halfway through a busy week. Fix the missing information first, then change the structure only if the same problem keeps returning.
How do you keep research notes connected to sources?
Create a source record before you ask an assistant to summarize a reading. Save the author, title, stable link, and the page or section you actually read. Put direct quotations in quotation marks and keep your explanation in a separate paragraph. This makes it possible to distinguish the author’s claim from your interpretation later.
Obsidian’s internal links (opens in a new tab) can connect notes and point to headings or blocks. Use that to connect a concept note to the source note containing its evidence. In Notion, you can keep the source details inside the reading page and link that page from the argument you are developing. The useful unit is the supported idea, not the quantity of links.
For example, imagine a sociology paper about commuting and campus participation. One note might say that travel time could affect attendance; another records a study’s actual sample and findings. Link them with a sentence explaining the relationship. A related result is not automatically evidence for your exact population or conclusion.
When the linked-note method itself becomes your main concern, see Zettelkasten in Notion vs Obsidian. For the current assignment, keep only the selected references and what you checked in fenbs’s Links and listings, leaving the full reading archive in the notes app.
Keep a checked reading list for this assignment
Add the source links that support your current study project in fenbs, with notes explaining which passage you checked and what remains uncertain. Your connected assistant can read that selected record alongside the project brief. The source still needs your review; storing its link does not verify its conclusions.

Which choice works better for group study?
Notion is the more direct choice when classmates need access to the same course page. Its sharing settings (opens in a new tab) let you invite people and choose whether they can view, comment, or edit. Use the narrowest access that suits the task, and check what the recipient can actually open before relying on a link during a meeting.
Choose Obsidian when the core work is your own developing understanding and you prefer to keep that archive as local files. For a group assignment, agree separately on the document everyone will submit and the place they will review it. Your personal note network and the group’s agreed answer serve different purposes, even when some ideas move between them.
Say three students divide a presentation into background, evidence, and recommendations. Before asking AI for help, agree on the question, the accepted sources, and who checks each slide. An attractive shared page does not resolve conflicting interpretations. Record the group’s choice explicitly so an assistant does not treat one person’s draft as everyone’s approval.
What changes when you use AI to study?
AI adds a second organization problem: the assistant needs enough context to help without receiving your entire archive. Give it the assignment question, the material you are allowed to use, the part you are working on, and the kind of help you want. “Ask me questions about this argument” produces a different study session from “write a response.”
Notion provides Notion MCP (opens in a new tab), a standard connection through which compatible AI apps can read and update accessible Notion content after authorization. Our Notion MCP capabilities guide explains that route, while Notion MCP vs Obsidian focuses on access patterns. Having a connection does not mean the assistant has read every relevant note.
Ask the assistant to state which sources it used and which points it could not check. Then reopen the source yourself before adding a quotation, page reference, or factual claim to assessed work. Follow your course’s AI policy and keep a record of assistance when required. Do not ask a tool to invent missing citations or reconstruct passages it cannot see.
This is where a short project brief earns its place. In fenbs, the AI context can hold your approved study instructions, current question, and Where we left off, so a connected assistant can begin from the work you deliberately saved instead of a vague account of the last chat.
How to do this with fenbs?
- Create a free account. It is free for one person, with no credit card; start with one real essay, exam topic, or research presentation.
- Add a project with the assignment question, intended outcome, and the boundary of the work. Add AI context notes for the background another session needs, without copying your whole notebook.
- Record the instructions you have confirmed in Decisions and rules, including the course’s requirements for AI use. Keep an unresolved interpretation open for a person to answer.
- Add checked references in Links and listings. For each, explain why it matters and where the relevant passage can be found. Keep private or restricted materials in the appropriate approved location.
- Connect a supported AI app through Integrations. Ask it to read the project context before helping and save progress before stopping, including what you practiced and the next question to work on.
fenbs is not the right fit for handwritten lecture notes, a complete PDF library, or a replacement for your school’s assignment submission system. It does not automatically import your Notion workspace or Obsidian vault. Use it when maintaining the study project across AI sessions is a recurring problem, rather than adding another app simply because you can.
Give your next study session a precise starting point
Save the question you are working on, the instructions you confirmed, and the next exercise in one fenbs project. Ask each connected assistant to read that context, then save what changed when you finish. You can change AI apps without rebuilding this selected study brief from memory.

How can you choose without moving your whole semester?
Test one ordinary week of work in each app using the same material: one lecture, one reading, and one small assignment. Time is less useful than friction here. Notice whether you can find the original source, identify the next action, and explain a concept without relying on an assistant’s wording.
Then try a small interruption. Leave the work for a few days and return in a fresh AI session. Can you recover the assignment instructions and the reasoning behind your last note? Pick the app that supports your actual study habits, and keep the smallest separate project brief that makes returning to the work easier.
