Notion AI Not Working: Check Access, Settings, and Service Issues
Notion AI can stop responding for several reasons: workspace settings, plan access, browser issues, or a Notion service problem. Here is a step-by-step way to find out which one you are dealing with.
Updated 5 min read
Notion AI stops working for a handful of distinct reasons, and each has a different fix. The most common causes are: AI has been disabled at the workspace level by an admin, the account does not have an active AI add-on or plan that includes AI, the browser or app needs a refresh, or Notion itself is having a service issue. Start at the top of that list and work down.
If Notion AI is down for maintenance or a wider outage, none of the fixes below will help and you will need to wait. Tools like fenbs can preserve the project context and your next steps while you wait, so when AI is available again you do not start from a blank.
Check the Notion service status first
Before changing any settings, check whether Notion itself is having a problem. Visit Notion's status page at status.notion.so for a live view of service health. If AI features show degraded performance or an outage, the problem is on Notion's side and changes to your settings will not fix it.
If the status page shows everything operational and you are still having trouble, the issue is in your workspace, account or browser.
If you see "Notion AI has been disabled for this workspace"
This message means a workspace admin has turned off Notion AI at the workspace level. Individual members cannot override this setting. You need to contact your workspace admin and ask them to re-enable it.
Workspace admins can find the toggle in Settings → Team settings → Notion AI. If your admin has turned it off deliberately, for example because of a company policy about AI tools, discuss the policy with them before asking for an exception. If it was turned off by accident, they can turn it back on immediately.
Check your plan and AI add-on
Notion AI requires either an AI add-on or a plan that includes AI. If your plan does not include AI and the add-on has not been purchased or has expired, the AI features will not appear or will prompt you to upgrade. Check your workspace billing in Settings → Plans and billing.
If you are on a team plan and your admin manages billing, they control whether the AI add-on is active. Check with them if you are unsure.
Basic troubleshooting steps
- Hard refresh the page: Ctrl + Shift + R on Windows or Cmd + Shift + R on Mac. Browser caching sometimes causes features to fail after a Notion update.
- Try a different browser or an incognito window. Browser extensions can interfere with Notion's AI features. If AI works in incognito, disable extensions one at a time to find the culprit.
- Switch to the Notion desktop app if you have it. Some features behave differently in a browser versus the native app.
- Sign out and sign back in. A stale authentication session can block AI responses.
- Check whether the same issue occurs in a different Notion workspace if you belong to more than one. If AI works in another workspace, the problem is specific to the first workspace's settings.
If AI responds but gives poor results
A working but unhelpful Notion AI is usually a context problem. Notion AI works within the content of the current page or block. If the page is nearly empty or contains a very long document without clear structure, the output suffers. Give it more to work with: paste in relevant notes, use headings to organize sections, and give explicit instructions in the prompt.
Notion AI also does not carry memory of previous sessions or other pages unless you ask it to work within a database that connects them. For complex projects, keeping the working context in a connected tool that an AI assistant reads explicitly gives more reliable results. See Notion MCP vs Notion AI for how those two approaches compare.
Moving work to another assistant while Notion AI is down
If Notion AI is unavailable and you need to keep working, export the relevant page content and paste it into Claude, ChatGPT or another AI assistant. The limitation is that each session in another tool starts without the context of your Notion workspace and previous decisions.
Keeping a summary of the current state and key decisions somewhere outside Notion — in fenbs, a separate document, or a brief note — means you can give any substitute assistant the right context without hunting through your workspace. See also Claude Code not working for the same troubleshooting pattern on a different tool.
Keep project context outside Notion
Add your current project state, active tasks and key decisions to fenbs. If Notion AI is unavailable, any supported AI assistant connected to fenbs reads the same context and can continue the work. When Notion AI is back, start a session with the same project record rather than reconstructing where you left off.

How to do this with fenbs
- Create a free account and add your active project as a task.
- Write the current state in the task note: what is done, what is in progress, the key decisions made so far.
- Add standing rules in Decisions and rules: the instructions that apply across sessions regardless of which AI tool you use.
- Connect a supported AI assistant from Integrations. If Notion AI goes down, ask the connected assistant to read the project context and continue from Where we left off.
- When Notion AI is restored, save progress back to fenbs before switching back. The record stays current for the next time any tool has an issue.
